Feel free to leave!

Feel free to leave!

Reincarnation? That sounded... Nice, actually. Just getting to start over with life. But something about this irked me. Decisions were being made that I wasn't part of. I needed more information.

"What do you mean, chosen?" I asked, an eyebrow arched and my voice raised inquisitively. Ugh, those were certainly habits but definitely not mine. I shook my heads trying to dislodge the disquieting feeling of being in a body you didn't belong in, and clarified by question. "Why? By who?"

The facilitators smile grew even wider, full of professional compassion and understanding. "Ah, of course, this is a very strange situation I imagine. It's only natural that you want more answers." They leaned back hands clasped together on the table. Entirely comfortable, as if every fiber of their being was trying to communicate I am one hundred percent here for you.

"Well, for one, all candidate choices are made directly by management. Since I'm not privy to their internal criteria, I'd simply guess that you must have been somehow exemplary in your previous life. Special, if you will. Enough so that you were chosen to be promoted into a position in Venatus, our pimere fantasy universe."

So not earth? That stung a little, I'd been getting my hopes up I might be able to return to my family. I sighed, still drawing some satisfaction from the action despite how alien everything I did felt when I paid too close attention.

"So, does that come with any obligations? Do I have to pay something?"

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

"Absolutely not!" The facilitator seemed honestly offended at the idea. "Our only aim is to enable you to live life to your fullest!"

"On that fantasy world," I added, because I felt that was quite a big caveat.

"Well, yes, but I promise you it is designed from the ground up with only our clients in mind."

I was still getting the strong impression that I was being sold on something I might not want to buy. Crossing my arms, I leaned back in my chair, my face set into a solid frown.

"Do I get any say in the matter?"

"Certainly! Character creation provides plenty of options to fully customize your experience!"

"I meant about the whole being reincarnated somewhere else thing," I clarified with a sigh.

"Of course, you are absolutely free to leave," the facilitator smiled, pointing at the void outside the door. I shuddered.

"What happens if I take that offer?"

"No idea! I've never been out there." The smile was way too cheerful. Were they mocking me? Hard to say, this might just be their customer service cheer.

Either way, the choice seemed to be either reincarnation into some potentially fucked up fantasy world or possibly floating through the void forever. It'd been kind of relaxing on the way here, but I got a distinct impression that I might just go insane if I spent too much time in there. Cool.

"Okay, reincarnation. How does that work?"

"I'm glad you've decided to stay with us for now! The reincarnation process is quite simple really. First, you will be connected to the system. Then we will work out your Archetype, Class and any other stats that need choosing. But let's take this one step at a time."

A jolt went through me, like a vice suddenly closing around my soul. Then, a faintly blue window appeared in front of me.
