CHAPTER 55: Time to Get to Work

Once they arrived at the crime syndicate's hideout, Sigurd stood outside while Jerry ran off, per his instructions. As with other such encounters, the brave baron decided the best thing to do was to head in through the front door.

The building the group operated out of was an unassuming one, placed squarely in the industrial district, next to a warehouse.

‘What is it about criminals and huddling in empty industrial buildings?' Joyce pondered. ‘You'd think they would at least go for a large house or some kind of office setting.’

“Ah well, no matter," he voiced aloud. “Time to get to work.”

Striking at the heart of their operation with precision and skill, Sigurd entered the building and cleared it out with ease. Perhaps all he was left to answer for were a few cuts and bruises.

As with his other run-ins with criminal organizations, the encounter went about as expected: they drew their swords, Sigurd drew his stubby, broken blade and applied a mix of halfhearted thrusts, before switching to hand-based combat.

Despite the state of his crippled blade, Sigurd broke no sweat in dispatching the criminals. If anything, flexing his muscles, military prowess, and overall technical aptitude made for a slightly more exciting battle.

Toward the end of it, as always the mob boss pleaded with empty words and spat insults and petty reasoning for why they did what they did, but Sigurd was more moved by compassion, righteousness, and outrage than usual. It irked him how callously such men could toy with people's lives.

While apprehending them all, Sigurd happened upon some documents in the hideout. On them were listed other families' names. They were all in some form of debt. He took note of all of them, intent on offering aid to them as well.

All-in-all, he was done in forty minutes. It was the amount of time he had calculated, for—after exiting the building, alongside the subdued boss–Jerry was back, and he had brought with him the town's guard.

Earlier, before they had even arrived at the building, Sigurd laid out his plan to the boy.

“As for the second thing, and I know you don't trust them," Sigurd started. “I'll handle the combat, but I want you to run as fast as you can and fetch the town guard.”

“What?" Jerry was apprehensive. “Why do you want their help?”

“I want to help clean up this town. And the only way we can do that is by working together!”

His words echoed in the back of his head as Sigurd handed the mob boss over to the chief guard.

“You did this?" the man asked Sigurd, handcuffing the mob boss. “And you're an adventurer?"

“That's right!" the baron replied proudly. “I want to prove adventurers can absolutely be heroes!”

Jerry broke out into joyous laughter.

“Well, thank you for all of this! We’d been looking for a way to take these scumbags down for the longest time." the chief guard voiced loudly. “We'll take it from here.”
