Chapter 3 - Plan to Survive

Sucking my thumb and rocking back and forth on my bed in absolute silence, I solemnly thought about my role in the story.

I still haven’t figured out what sort of beast I was either– which would be crucial when the main story began.

Sitting up from my cradle, I scooted off the bed and bum-shuffled my way over to the mirror, glaring at the reflection staring back at me.

Some sort of beast….. I squinted my eyes and moved closer to the mirror as if it would tell me the secrets to my species– yet to no avail. There were tons of species with thin ears and a tail, the tail that I had tried to forget about for a long time.

It was odd having a tail since I never had one before. Certainly, I felt like a dog of the sort, because the tail could wag. My ears, no longer placed on the flat sides of my head but around my temples, felt odd as well. They picked up on certain sounds I usually wouldn’t if I focused.

Similar to having advanced hearing, I felt like I had a superpower for a moment, but that clarity was ripped from me as I remembered that many beasts share the same trait.

Fingers dragged through my scalp, my ears down turning as my face drooped along with my palm sliding off my cheek.

“What is flat-eared with a short-ish tail…” I quizzed, talking to the air. Perhaps I completely lost it after being stuck in this freakish world. A shiver ran down my spine.

“Wolf, No. Bunny? No…”

My head tilts to the side as my brows furrow. Trying to remember the various species in the book was hard, they all had many differences and similarities… But the problem was that I didn’t pay attention to them very much, So I didn’t have a lot of options.

The idea of looking through My– -Leon's diary finally came up as I fell over from my consistent head-tilting. Fumbling over onto my stomach as I crawled to the bed to grab the diary. I squinted at the first page’s contents.

Words stretched and jumbled into each other. God, his handwriting was terrible. I familiarized myself with the language inscribed in the book, which was dubbed ‘Lyverinian’, something with two meanings that turned into ‘Godlike truth.’ the universal language of magic that almost everyone in the world used.

“Damn… Leon you suck…” I snickered, knowing damn well that his terrible handwriting really just reflected mine in the real world. I flipped the entire book over trying to decipher the text that seemed to twist with each stroke. His pen, or quilt, seemed to never lift from the pages during these entries.

I could only make sense of a good bunch of the text if I squinted. Leon seemed to love journaling– or just writing in his diary in general, even if he wasn’t good at it. Some entries were short, others long enough to take up the whole page.

One thing I noted was that he did it almost every day, only occasionally skipping a day from some business related matters or however you say that.

From what I gather from the entries of the diary, Leon recently moved to the Kingdom of Uresanthia. Uresanthia is a lesser kingdom in the region of Arde.

The thought of where I exactly lived had never crossed my mind, it had seemed to slip. Because depending on where I lived, I would either enjoy a peaceful life or deal with a hectic one and be swept into the main-characters shenanigans.

I kept flipping through the entries of Leon, and there, mentioned absolutely nothing about what he was.

In Evelyn, the supermassive continent, there were four major kingdoms. By the people, they are the [ Four Great Kingdoms ].

Each kingdom took certain sections of the continent and was established or ruled by one of the prime gods— The absolute creators of the universe who were only mentioned about once.

All I really knew was that the Prime Gods were the most superior in the entire universe, and governed the reality we lived in.

I’m not sure how they rule their kingdoms if their presence is so remarkable to startle Earth and have every citizen on their knees, but maybe that was covered in another book I had yet to read.

So focused on the creators of the universe, I had yet to figure out how I exactly landed in Evelyn, or how to get out.

There is no magic time machine or dimension hoppers in the modern world– science hasn't even come close to debunking theories about alternate timelines and universes. Hell, I wasn’t even a witch or wizard! Or whatever those people were called, spiritualists???

I scratched my head and attempted to think… but nothing came to thought. I literally just fell asleep at my desk and woke up here.

‘Bullshit! Isn’t there like a system or something?’

I rapidly twisted my body to the side, attempting to try and open one of those ‘systems’ that were popular in some other isekai series. Usually, the main character had something like that to assist them.

“System!!! Off!!!!!”

“System…?”

I embarrassingly called out, met with silence. Oh, how humiliating. I really am just a useless side character…

“How to survive….” My tongue clicked as I fell backward, pillowing my skull with my arms whilst I stared at the ceiling.

The thought of going back to my timeline wasn’t really coming to me, as my head just sort of remained on the idea. Not really going anywhere with it. But I felt like I wasn’t opposed to staying here.

Silence lingered beside me for a while as I lay with the feeling akin to betraying my real world.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

If I decided to stay here, what would happen in the real world? Was I in a hospital bed with my friends waiting for me to wake up and get to the next game of soccer? Or was I replaced by the Leon of this world?

Some sort of result germinated into the resulting decision– I was going to stay here and survive. After all, my family was here, right? My mom was exactly the same as she was back home, I had no siblings, and my father was not in sight. It wasn’t really all that different besides the absence of an education facility.

But also my best friend.

My hand once again found its way to my face as I gripped the flesh of my cheeks, reminiscing about that dumb boy, Blake, who was the root cause of my being here.

I brushed it off. Sitting up and scooting off my arse, I came up with a genius plan!

I will survive as a useless side character in the world of Evelyn!

I had constructed a pretty solid plan.

Well, It wasn’t that solid. To be honest, It was more like a gamble.

A gamble on the universe, to be exact. To test whether Evelyn is forgiving to the side characters, and if I have the potential to be more than just a side character.

Because there were many remarkable side characters from what I had read and the main character was still near the bottom of the pyramid when he started. There was a hope to become stronger before any of the main story kicked in!

If I could change my fate by avoiding the plot, I could gain more clout, therefore…

A promotion to the main character!

Using the story's events, I could secure items the main character comes across and develop a strong team of friends to rely on.

Of course, I wouldn’t steal everything, because I didn’t have the information to the other buffs after the third book. Maybe it was tampering with the future, but the main character will still be the main character! No biggie, he can survive a few artifacts missing from their places.

‘Heh. heh. Heh. heh.”

My face twisted into some sort of amalgamation I don’t want to imagine, but I finally settled on a goal! I’d plan, and then survive!

I whipped around to the mirror, noticing my rather normal appearance. This wouldn’t do. I needed to look like a hero!

With a puffed chest, I threw open the nearby closet to take a peek at my wardrobe–

–only to find it in a very pitiful state.

Leon didn’t seem to have many flashy clothes. Quite literally the embodiment of a side character and a commoner. Just some plainly made clothes, with only the occasional ‘fancy’ one, which were just shirts with some ruffles in them.

A tear silently falls from my face.

After a (not so) long debate, I decided to compliment my look with a simplistic green vest, a shade that seemed to add flair to my colors. My leggings and leather additions already fit well and make me appear strong, so I feel no need to change them.

Excitedly, I bolted for the door. Just about to close it behind me, I spot the diary lying on the floor.

‘Leon liked to write about his life… Maybe I should do that too?’

I silently thought before taking the book with me. My bolt changed to a slow walk as I left my room and headed for the stairs.

As I descended, I first smelt the warm and soft scent of bread. It was warm, but not in an uncomfortable way.

I let myself be dragged along by the wafting smells of my mothers cooking, the instincts of the Leon who lived this life before me coming first. I found a seat at the counter behind the kitchen, where my mother was hunched over to retrieve what I would assume to be bread.

“You’re here? Do you want some bread?” She spoke softly as the loafs were pulled from the pot of heat and onto a tray. I hadn’t even noticed the way I perked up at the sight of those white lumps of goodness.

“My Leon is growing up so well-!”

She came over and ruffled a good portion of my hair as I sunk into my seat. A towel wrapped itself around a loaf of bread and found itself in front of me, my mother murmuring something about needing to make more.

“Today will be busy….”

She trailed off in her own thoughts whilst I happily gnawed into the loaf. The instant I took a bite, my face recoiled with a hiss, the bread burned my mouth.

“Hot!”

I yowled as I still kept the piece I bit off in my mouth, exhaling large huffs of air that turned into steam. My mother noticed and laughed, little curls of blonde bouncing as she came over with a cup of iced water.

“Whups.” The bread piece was swallowed down, leaving only my burnt tongue to hang out.

“You have to fix that bad habit of yours,” Mother snickered playfully as she pulled my cheek, “Having small meals like you're famished!”

I glanced away because I quite literally was famished, only I just didn’t know until now. My mom mumbled something about me that I didn’t take note of.

Remaining silent, I lifted the glass up to my lips and chugged it down all in one go, the empty glass with only ice clattering against the wooden counter as I deeply exhaled. Maybe to hide the embarrassment.

The loaf of bread had significantly cooled down now, still hot, but cooled enough to eat safely.

My body swerved around the chair and hopped off with one hand on the diary, and the other with the loaf of bread.

‘Need to check out the streets,’

To prepare for my pilgrimage, I had to assess my resources. Latching the bread with my teeth and pocketing the towel, I began dashing for the central plaza.

Buildings flew past me as I ran, and I could feel the memories of the old Leon slipping into my brain. Within seconds, the directions of the town were memorized and recalled. I knew the way back to the house, and how to get away from it.

Breaching the bright square with no buildings or lamp posts in the way, I stood like a little lost fawn at the number of people bustling about.

“Looking for resources…” I repeated in my head, regaining my footing and slowly trotting my way around the perimeter of the plaza. Some markets and local vendors surrounded the outside of the plaza, allowing travelers and neighbors to buy trinkets that would eventually be sold into other kingdoms.

Many strange people caught my eye, but they still just looked like normal people. I needed to find people who looked like they knew magic had potential!

Here I am, staring at strangers like an idiot separated from his mom, well I kind of was, assessing the most peculiar people to ask questions.

Before carefully observing my targets, my sights landed on some very interesting-looking ladies exploring a stall.

They appeared to be a duo, sticking to each other and pointing at items for information.

One was brown-haired with styled spiky hair along with feathered ears, and the other a dark color with luxurious waved hair. ‘Two very formidable ladies,’ I nod smartly.

Both of their hair was long, but I couldn’t see their figures well due to the capes they wore. It looks very fancy and well made from my perspective, some intricate patterns sewn into the cloak could be seen.

Another thing to note was that they obviously were foreigners, so maybe they were an adventuring duo?

Surely, they wouldn’t mind answering a poor little boy's questions. And I would get a peek at the ladies of Evelyn!

“Excuse me, ma’am!”

I trotted with confidence, tugging at the cloak of the brown-haired one as she turned around.

The color drains from my face faster than anything.

That ‘lady’ in question was actually a man! But that wasn’t the worst part. They both were men! Fully grown men! The brown-haired man was actually topless aside from the brown cloak, and he was very built. So much so it already felt scary only being in his presence.

The other one shot a curious expression. He too, appeared very built.

The two bore some similarities, but the one that astonished me the most was the very thing I hadn’t acknowledged about the characters in Evelyn from the beginning.

They both had. Very large. Boobs.

Well, they were larger than what you’d normally see from someone in the gym. But they were built like a Greek god, and their physique was as the author described many characters,

“Tall with a muscular physique, and a notable mass in the bust,”

I hated the author for doing this to so many characters, so much so that it affected side characters.

“Freaks…” I gasped so silently under my breath that I thought only a pitiful jumble of air came out instead.
