Chapter 18: Divinity from Mortality

Chapter 18: Divinity from Mortality

At the plains of the prismatic grass overwatched by a mountain. Where a singular river flowed through the lands and nurtured life. Where an apex predator used to live and where a man lost his arm.

That was the birthplace of something great. An event that would have implications that all inhabitants would not be able to comprehend. A chain of events that would herald a new age was set forth that.

It's therefore, almost saddening to realize that the one responsible for this series of events would never truly know what she had done.

She would never understand the magnitude of her choices and their effects on reality.

She had created something from nothing, birthed divinity from mortality. She sacrificed her faith to a higher concept and unwittingly allowed another to be birthed.

An equivalent exchange of sorts.

That is not to say that she was solely responsible for this event. Credit must be given to the universe itself for allowing it to happen. Yet when it truly came down to it, she was the one who set the stone in motion.

Without her, it would have taken many millennia for this event to ever truly happen, and even then it wouldn't have been the same.

It had been a sacrifice in the most metaphysical sense possible, to give up one belief for another.

It wasn't an instantaneous process by any means but it could be argued that the length of that process is what allowed the birthing.

For you see it was those final moments of struggle that sparked the process. The build-up to this action gave it all the more significance, and her being the first to ever do this gave it even more power.

The clincher of this whole process, the material that finalized it all, was of course her title [ The Oracle Of The North Wind]. How can one be an oracle of something that doesn't exist? It was a metaphysical paradox.

A concept cannot exist if the thing in itself doesn't exist in some form. If the concept is there then the idea of that object or thing must exist. And for that concept to affect reality, it must have a physical counterpart.

If it doesn't then a sort of pressure is exerted upon reality to make that so. That pressure being allowed to take action of course depends on the will of the universe.

To sacrifice one concept for another is powerful, but to have always believed in one concept is unique in its own manner.

[The Oracle Of The North Wind] raised her children to believe in the north wind unequivocally. There was never a doubt in their minds, even when she still doubted and hoped for another being.

She had added a new sort of belief to this already delicate and powerful process.

Her position as the Oracle of one higher being and her belief in another made her into a scale. Whatever side she landed on would be brought into existence within this universe.

Both beings did not exist, and both were still somehow vying for existence, that tension gave it power. It was a process that caught the eyes of those outside the universe.

So when this Oracle finally gave up her old god for her new one, she allowed for a flood of metaphysical energy and aether to flow out of that tension and give birth to Deventus [The North Wind].

An event that had been 50 years in the making had finally come to its conclusion. The first-ever natural-born divine being had come into existence.

When Deventus was thrust into reality, she opened her eyes to a world unknown to her. Within her was knowledge she had never experienced and powers she had never earned.

She was all alone in her new world, after all a divine being is not born in a mortal plane. She existed in a void.

An empty lonely void.

It was a plane that overlapped reality yet simultaneously was completely different.

So she shifted her attention to the mortal plane, where her maker resided.

She could not communicate with her maker, though she wanted so much to thank her for bringing her into existence.

Yet she did give up in trying to show her gratitude. So, even though she could not enter the mortal realm she attempted another method entirely.

She transferred much of her power to the maker down below. Of course, as a newborn, that method was not without its flaws. Much of the energy was lost and created spirits of wind but the little that did make it was perfect.

If all the energy had transferred over she would kill her mother.

An action that would have been truly devastating for such a young soul.

Instead, she boosted the power of the maker.

Instead of simple singular flashes of information and a few precognitive abilities, she made her a true Oracle.

Instead of simply running with the wind, she had been granted the ability to call forth a tempest.

That wasn't to say that that power was immediately accepted, after all, how can one accept something that they are not aware of?

The process of acquiring these newfound powers took time. It was a glacial process and from the perspective of the maker, it simply seemed as if she was talented. The idea that she was being given something was not realized until much later.

In all honesty that is a rather solid guess for someone not in the know.

Her children had always revered her but as her power and knowledge grew that reverence turned almost fanatical. The seeds of religion were planted.

A religion whose name would be echoed throughout reality both for its achievements and its failures. However, that is not a story for now.

With this newfound backing, the humans ventured further and with more confidence. They started to build more and tame the land around them for their usage.

Not to say that the rest of the inhabitants of this world rolled over for them, but they were finally no longer at the bottom of the food chain.

Deventus watched eagerly as all these events unfolded before her eyes. She was not omniscient but wherever the North wind blew she could see and she saw a lot.

Perhaps too much.

So she tried to intervene and quench a potential disaster but unwittingly she has drawn attention to herself.

That attention led to restrictions upon her.

So she wallowed in fear and anger all the while watching over the mortals down below. Until she realized that even though she could not directly intervene she could send visions to the mortal realm.

The winds hate to be chained and they always find a way to do what they want.

So she sent visions of unification and strength. She wanted them to build up and become more powerful so they could leave that cursed temple. She couldn't send visions of the temple as she herself couldn't see what would happen but she could send warnings.

Slowly the humans left their old homes and inhabited areas further away from the temple. All of them did not leave of course, but her warnings were working however slowly that might be.

If it wasn't for the reluctance o her maker's partner she would have had more success but no matter what visions she sent to her maker she could not be convinced of leaving him. In fact, the more she did so the less the maker trusted her powers.

So instead she continued to focus on further strengthening the bonds of the mortals.

As for Alexis, she was adapting to her newfound power quite well, and she was simultaneously coming to a rather shocking realization.

She didn't want to go back.

Back on earth she would be nearly guaranteed safety comfort and the love of her friends and family. She could return back to her community and live that ordinary life she always wanted. Those had been her original intentions.

Yet after so many years of living in this new world, her yearning for the old started to fade. She had to admit she quite liked her powers and could these children not be counted as her family?

Her relationship with them was a strange one and she knew she could've done better. They revered her but there was very little familial love. Of course, she was disgusted by the events that pushed her here but should that affect how she treated these children of hers. What kind of mother would that make her if she could so easily abandon her children for her own happiness.

It's rather amusing to think that the one who struggled the most with coming here was the one who wanted to leave the least.

Her powers were only growing, here she was powerful, she was revered and her decisions mattered. Perhaps they were insignificant in the grand sense of things, but to her they had much more significance than her actions back home.

In this world, her divine being aided her and showed her the path. There was actual "evidence" of its existence. It's one thing to stick to a belief when all others also don't have any more backing than it. It's a whole other thing to stay when there's clear evidence for another.

The final event that led to her relinquishing her old beliefs was the departure of her 3rd oldest child.

She knew she could have made him stay with the right words and actions yet she hadn't.

At that moment she had wanted him to be happy and follow the path that would most fulfill him. His staying would only bring him unhappiness and as a mother that wasn't something she wanted.

She had fully accepted him as her child and simultaneously she accepted this world as hers.

After that, she began to dread returning back home. She knew that she was too different of a person now. She wouldn't be able to truly fit back in the hole she had left back home.

Her partner Arnaud continued to long for his home but she knew that he was blinded by an ideal. He too had changed too much to simply fit back in his old relationships. Yet she couldn't fault him he had a child back home. One that he valued much more than the ones here.

From that day on she began the process of accepting fully integrating her new beliefs.

She began to play the role of an oracle wholeheartedly and found that her power continued to grow at a steady pace. The winds no longer simply aided bit now they obeyed her every whim and desire.

She wasn't as physically powerful as Arnaud, he would best her in combat even with her prophetic abilities.

But now given just a little bit of time she could make decisions and put things into positions that would change the outcome of a fight. In fact, she could end a fight before it began.

There were still massive holes in her knowledge.

Even with her being partly divine her range was still limited. There were secrets that she would never be privy to, but they didn't make a difference to her.

She used these newfound prophetic abilities to make advancements in cultivation that Arnaud would never have discovered in his experiments.

She revolutionized how qi was used and recorded it down for future generations to see.

She set plans into motion that would guarantee the survival of her children even with her death. Her acceptance of this new world had ignited a fire within her soul.

Much was changed due to her actions.

Reality will always throw things at you that will hinder and cause distress. For many, they eventually crumble under this pressure. For her, she chose to be greater.

Yet you almost remember that the universe won't ever stop throwing things at you.

This was something she forgot.
