Chapter 3

As Griswalt checked her over, making absolutely sure there would be no lasting effects, she did her utmost to evade suspicion. It was rather tiring, though she didn’t know if her encroaching exhaustion was from him or her current situation.

“So, I will not lie to you, you walked along the thinnest of edges, but in my professional opinion you are on the mend Miss. It is also of my personal opinion that this may be somewhat of a miracle, I would have to consult with other physicians on this!” He smiled warmly to her.

“What do you mean?” Diana inquired. Hoping she wouldn’t end up lauded as some sort of saint over this.

“We do not yet know the cause of the illness, nor how to treat it. In truth the only thing we really know of it, is that it only afflicts children. There have been countless cases in recent times, and in most cases the afflicted do not survive,” he explains, a sadness starting to enter his voice. She guessed he had likely lost patients to whatever this mystery illness was.

“I see,” her voice came softly. “Are there… others…like me?” She asked the man in front of her timidly.

“Some yes, though I am unsure if any of the other afflicted had as profound memory loss. Some loss in memory has been recorded in more of the recent reports of those who survived,” he answers with an understanding nod. “Though none I myself have seen yet have had such an exponential boon afterwards!” He stated barely containing his excitement.

“What is that supposed to mean?” Panic struck her at his last sentence. Somehow he had seen or noticed something. How was she to hide something if she didn’t know how or what exactly it was she needed to hide? Noticing this panic, Griswalt spoke again quickly to assuage her worry.

“I see… there was lot more forgotten than just who you are. Not to worry Miss Diana I am bound to a strict code that protects patients privacy and upholds the utmost discretion over matters like this,” he tried to reassure her.

At least this world had its version of doctor-patient confidentiality. That was a small comfort to her. She briefly started to wonder about what else here was similar to her home, before bringing herself back to her present conversation.

“Yes… I remember meeting a goddess, though that is all I remember of it. Not even a name,” she explained carefully. She knew this over abundance of caution was likely unnecessary, but with Diana’s mother still in the room, this was her best course of action.

Diana’s mother sat patiently at the table beside her, and Diana could tell all of this was very understandably upsetting her. Though she was hiding it well, Diana couldn’t tell if it was just because Griswalt was with them, or if she was putting on a brave face for her daughter. Either way, Diana knew the woman sitting next to her was strong, and had the patience of a saint. She was also incredibly beautiful, with long flowing black as night hair and sapphire colored eyes, the features of her face were quite delicate. From this angle Diana could see just how young the woman truly was, and that what had happened with Diana had been taking a great toll on her. In this moment, Diana decided she would tell her mother what had happened… just not yet. She deserved to know, but this Diana still didn’t have the trust built yet.

“Right, well My Lady it seems the young Miss will need to relearn everything from the ground up,” Griswalt sighed gently as he looked at mother, “Though through time and the learning, it is possible she might regain some of her memories,” He reassured them both.

“Very well, Diana get some rest dear, we will discuss more after dinner,” Mother stood, as did Griswalt, “Oh, please stay seated, I’ll send the nanny to help you back to bed,” Mother said to me warmly as she waved the physician on.

As time for dinner approached, the nanny returned to help her get dressed. It had been about six hours since she woke up, but she was still a little wobbly on her feet from this body being bedridden for nearly a week so she still needed the help. Her nanny put her in a cute pastel blue dress, not something overly fancy, but definitely well made. She’d love a conversation with the person who made it. She could definitely tell it had been hand stitched, maybe they didn’t have sewing machines yet? Maybe her parents (her mother) had wanted the quality? Not to mention the fabric, as well! She could tell just how fine of thread it had been woven with, and feel how smooth it was when it brushed against her arms. She was starting to piece together its construction in her mind when a question from the nanny yanked her back to reality.

“Are you sure you’re ready for a family dinner Miss? I know the Lady insisted but they would understand if you are not feeling up for a larger meal or socializing,” She asked, worry for the girl evident in her tone.

“I am a little nervous, but it’s because I’m afraid they might be putting too many expectations on me. Or I on my own self. Yes they are my parents and care about me, but right now they are complete strangers to me. Am I acting in a way that I would have before I lost my memory? Who was Diana before? Would they be disappointed if this changed me?” She starts to rant, anxiety creeping into her.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

“Oh Little Miss do try to calm yourself. Do not let these things worry you so. Children change so much so fast, their parents help them through those changes as they come,” her nanny explained to her, putting a hand on the girls shoulder trying to calm her.

It hadn’t really worked. Without any thought Diana threw her arms around the woman in a tight hug, and she began to weep. Her weeps became heavy, loud sobs as she began releasing her grief and anger about her predicament. She wanted for nothing but to be held in her mothers arms again. The nanny scooped her up gently and held the girl close. She was a child again, not that she had been an adult very long, but right now it felt right to let herself be a bit childish. The nanny began stroking her hand up and down Dianas back, and swaying side to side gently.

“It’s good to get it out Miss, holding your emotions in weighs not only on your mind, but on your heart as well,” the nanny cooed lovingly to the girl. This woman had likely been like a close aunt or big sister to Diana. Being her nanny she would have known Diana just as well, if not better than Diana’s parents.

“T-thank you,” Diana croaked out once she had calmed enough that her tears we just a trickle. She was great full the woman had comforted her. She hadn’t even been in this world a full day and yet had started to feel quite alone. Sure there were plenty of people around, but they hadn’t really been interested in how hard this was emotionally. She had thought Diana was close with her parents but now she wasn’t so sure.

“All is well with us Miss,” her nanny sighed and sat Diana on the bed gently, “I will go inform the Lady that you would prefer to have dinner up here tonight. You did still want to eat, correct?” She asked the girl.

“Oh yes! All the sleeping and being dangerously ill definitely worked up my appetite,” Diana laughed dryly. Her nanny gave her an odd look before nodding.

“Yes Miss, I will come up with your dinner shortly,” the nanny stated, and excused herself from Dianas room.

As she entered the dinning room, Lenore felt the gaze of the Lady fall over her. Of all the employers she’d had, the Lady and Lord had by far been the kindest with her. And to their children. In her time as a nanny she had seen noble family after noble family using their children as pawns, or treating them like accessories. Yet these two had been nothing like those awful people. They adored all three of their children. Diana was the oldest, and should have started being primed to become a proper Lady like her mother, but her parents thought it best to wait until she was older. They had wanted her to have a relatively normal childhood before being brought into the responsibility of nobility. She briefly curtsied to both of them before she spoke.

“My apologies for the delay, the young Miss is unfortunately not emotionally ready for this yet,” she bowed her head to them.

“No no, we understand,” the Lord said with a wave, “How is she though, what happened while you were with her?” He questioned her.

“Well, she’s understandably emotional. She was crying before I came down, I was able to soothe her. She became very worried you both would be disappointed that she may not ever be the same after this,” Nanny Lenore began explaining, “Before this though, once she was dressed, Miss Diana was examining her dress in a way I had not seen her do before, I believe it was the first use of her new [Skill]. I was unable to ask since no one has gone over that with her yet and we had not expected her to be able to yet,” she finished her brief.

“Right, well she’s of an age where using her [Skills] are possible, but as she is now she is not leveled enough to do so, or at least that’s what Griswalt told us. It’s likely it was a small expression of her new [Adept] Skill, stemming from the base [Beginner] Skill,” the Lady explained to her before continuing, “Sit with her and explain things to her while she eats. She is still our very bright girl, and I feel it would be best to continue guiding her as such. She will not get anywhere if we just sit back and hope she will remember something without examples of what she should know,” the Lady finished.

“Yes My Lady, I will be as thorough as I can be, I agree the Miss is very bright! Speaking with her today, she sounded much more adult than before,” Lenore agreed and curtsied again before leaving the room.

As she walked to the kitchen, she was deep in thought. It was strange that they had brushed over her telling them how upset she was, but maybe they were trying not to push Miss Diana too hard. Lenore knew this was hard on everyone, and had been a difficult time for her too. She loved the little Miss, and seeing her hurt was painful. Everyone had been overjoyed with the news she had awoken!

For her that joy had been quickly replaced with more fear as she was one of a handful of people told about Miss Diana’s current amnesia. As the girl’s personal nanny she had been given orders to keep a close watch for any odd . Watching her examine the dress Lenore had put her in was certainly odd for Lenore to see. She had been told all of Miss Diana’s previous Skills and Level had been erased. The girl had only a few months prior gained her second [Skill] and made it to her third Level, against her parent’s insistence that she take her time with doing so.

The System that every one was born with, was largely limited for children. They only gained the ability to start unlocking and using their Skills on their tenth birthday. From the minute she woke up that day, Miss Diana had wanted to begin going all out. Her mother had tried to put a stop to it as soon as she found out. Explaining to Miss Diana that she would have time for that as she got older, and that she only had a finite time left to still be a child. Miss Diana didn’t let that stop her from trying though.

She had taken relatively useful Skills for a young noble, [Calligraphy] being her first [Skill], she had trained it tirelessly. For her hard work she had blew through the first [Level] and once she made it to the second, picked [Negotiate] as her second [Skill]. Miss Diana had not been able to train it as much as the first, so continued with [Calligraphy] until she had managed to make it up to [Level: 3].

Once they had seen their daughter’s rapid growth, the Lord and Lady again implored Miss Diana to slow down her progress. This time Miss Diana reluctantly agreed, though Lenore was pretty certain it was because the young Miss had been running herself ragged. The break had not lasted though, and Miss Diana had taken to sitting in on one of her parents meetings a week. They had let her take meeting notes for them to appease her.

Lenore had made it to the kitchen, and picked up a tray that had Miss Diana’s dinner waiting on it. Then, she hurried off to Miss Diana’s room. Not wanting to leave the girl longer than she needed to. There was no telling what that girl would get up to when unsupervised! There was also the matter of having to explain how The System worked to her. Lenore hoped she would be able to do so well enough!
