Chapter 25: The pit of darkness

Jet traversed the path with the utmost care. The further she ascended, the more narrow it became. Guttural moans of despair filled her senses. The detect magic spell she cast didn't seem to have an effect on her immediate area. Instead, the path before her turned into a slimy goo. She knew from experience that evil could corrupt anything. She was careful not to touch the goo, but avoiding it was inevitable. Her white boots reflected the reddish and green goo of the slime she trudged through. A burning sensation brought her attention to the amulet that the old villager had given her. The radiance of its light had an effect on the goo, it was revealed by it's illuminessence. Her mini map fill in as she reached the top of a ridge. She recognized the terrain.

I'm in the Pit of Darkness?

Like any magic user, she was fully aware of Darkow and it's important to all levels of magic. But, according to game lore, the pit was the sum of all evil magic. Jet climbed the ridge just above the pit. The entire zone was visible. Cheers and triumphant music came from an arena in the distance. A path formed by two streaks of flame climbed the ridge and surrounded her. The effects of the heat were immediate. She wiped sweat from her brow as the flames inched closer. A red portal opened and an ebony-skinned woman dressed in embroidered white robes with gold trim exited.

Another Magi?

"Hail, my name is JetaGirl. Who are you?"

The Magi gave her a disdainful look.

"It's been a while since I've seen another player—”

"Shut your foul mouth. I'm from Pretzelverse's enforcement division. You have broken the game's rules and must be punished."

"What rule have I broken?"

"You have manipulated the dungeon master."

Is she for real?

"Are you working for Lord Aldoor?"

The Magi seemed unsure of herself.

"What? No!"

"There is no in-game enforcement system, especially in this early game build. As a tester, you should know that."

"I'm not a tester. I'm from the dev team."

"Hm, where's your purple robe?" Jet asked.

A series of lightning strikes surrounded Jet and the Magi. A booming sound nearly deafened her. An orange portal appeared and a man she knew as Lord Aldoor appeared.

"Well done, my dear. The mirror man will be happy."

"Un-Por-Vet," Jet said.

A blue portal opened before her. Before she could step through, Queen Amerdelle made a series of hand gestures. All portals disappeared along with her mana.

What did she cast?

"You're not going anywhere without us," Lord Aldoor said, laughing.

"In-Ot-Dak-Cad-Vet," Queen Amerdelle said as she waved her arms toward Jet.

A red swirling pattern spun around Jet's wrists. She couldn't move.

"Now, where can we find the dungeon master?" Lord Aldoor asked.

I'm not telling him anything.

Jet looked away defiantly.

"Enough of this insolence," Queen Amerdelle said.

Jet's vision blurred. Moments later, her eyes refocused. She was in an area she recognized, the halls of the Mad Queen and her magic was gone.
