Chapter 31: Fort Aftermath

Chapter 31: Fort Aftermath

The smoke from Mia's rampage left a dark cloud in the sky tinting the rain and marring the sky. The unique dark green tinted rain from burning so many elves to dust, a rare sight for all caused small puddles around the dilapidated fort.

Reinforcements from the Human side approached from the rear and broke the scorched vines and wooden chains the elves preferred over steel for their inherent ability to bolster the rigidity of plant matter via magic. They entered to find the absolute one-sided carnage of the fort.

Arrows broken and scattered among gouged and scorched tile leading up to and passing through decimated corpses, some faces frozen in fear some in agony, various masks denoting the varying swiftness with which they were put down. Some scorched beyond recognition.

The stench of dry sap and scorched earth hit their nostrils and assailed their senses. A pale elderly mage led the battalion, His beard reached down to his abdomen. His robes were a pale white with gold trim faint symbols of a long-forgotten language embossed around in a different slightly bluer shade of white.

"We did tell her we were going to attack the fort together didn't we?"

"Honestly, we should have just gone with her plan at this point and just launched her over the wall."

The old mage gazed back at her. A Similarly dressed female mage with tan skin and barely noticeable lines on her face, she carried herself as though she were young but a trained eye could discern her deception.

"This place smells more like a lumber mill than a battlefield. you think they photosynthesize?"

"No, they eat. We couldn't starve them if they didn't eat."

The two court mages kept a light-hearted conversation as they passed through halls of carnage inspecting rooms briefly before moving on. The soldiers followed in silence warry of what dangers they might pass.

As they'd entered from behind they'd arrived at the office Mia was sleeping in much faster than if they'd approached from the elven side of the fort. They found there a yellow ball of hair lying in the fetal position covered in darkened sap and ash, a pile of destroyed and discarded elven armour in the middle of the room, and an oddly humanoid pile of charcoal in a corner of the room.

The female mage quietly approached the hero and bent down to inspect her more closely, the smell of iron only now entering her nose. She saw faint dark red stains under her hair and gently brushed a few strands off her face.

Before anyone had even a moment to think, the yellow ball sprang up with bloodshot eyes, weapon levelled at the mage's throat at the ready. Everyone knew instinctively that no one was fast enough to prevent what was about to happen and froze in terror.

Mia's hand reached up into the mage's hood and caressed her ear, in a moment Mia's gaze softened and she fell back down pulling the bear skin she'd been using as a blanket back over herself, and went back to sleep.

The second the weapon was removed from her throat the mage backstepped a few feet and took a deep trembling breath, she tried to calm herself as best she could but ended up having to leave the room almost dragging everyone else to leave as quietly as possible before she could calm her nerves.

"We should probably get her a change of clothes."

Those were the first words she could muster once she'd finally stopped shaking. A few soldiers left a spare set of fatigues and armour at the foot of the door. before the group left to inspect the rest of the fort.

After they arrived at the gate on the elven side they found the cause of Mia's outburst. a few half-rotten heads some recognizable as forces sent out and others not as recognizable as they were requited recently on the elven side.

They also met up with Lagina and Latif who'd seen the smoke and came to inspect the damage as well. The court mage introduced himself to the party af barely dressed women and the two soldiers they'd sent on this mission.

"I am The court High mage Danica, and this is my husband Quantay, we were sent to help you overtake the fort but it looks like it's just about done."

As she spoke she jumped out in front of him and cast a spell to surround herself in twinkling lights. He sighed but let her introduce the group. Lagina spoke quietly with dead eyes occasionally letting her vision slip over to her friend's head on a pike and she introduced herself and briefed the allies on their situation thus far handing over Laurentius' journal from the old base as she did.

Danica immediately passed the journal to Quantay who spent the rest of the time reading as Danica led the new group into the depths of the fort and immediately began putting plans into place to reinforce the destroyed fort before the elves caught wind and came to reclaim it. she even used her magic to patch up some cosmetic areas around the outside to make the fort appear sturdier than it was in case they needed to stall for time.

By around midday, Mia had woken up by herself was dressed, and met up with the two groups in earnest. once together they began making plans, Mia assessed honestly what parts had the worst damage as the one who caused it and how best they could reinforce it.

The mages sent a correspondence back via messenger bird asking what to do with the reclaimed prisoners of war. Lagina and Latif started clearing out the corpses of the elves and mounting their heads on the pikes outside in place of the heads of their friends whom they'd decided to send back home for a proper burial.

With added manpower, the group began work repairing the old overgrown fort and getting acquainted with each other.
