Chapter 34: Handing Over the Evidence

Chapter 34: Handing Over the Evidence

After leaving Scott Crawford's house with the evidence in hand I knew I needed to give it to the people who could do something about it.

I should ask a passerby where I can report a crime. Better than me fumbling around trying to find it.

I waved at the young woman that happened to be passing by.

"Excuse me!", I said with a smile, walking up to the woman.

"Yes?"

"I was wondering where I can report a crime around here."

"Are you okay?", she said, her brows creasing in worry.

"Yeah, I'm good. Thanks for your concern. Just got some information on this guy."

"Okay good. You'll wanna go to the Guards. If it's something major ask to see the Guard Captain. You may have to wait a bit though because he tends to be rather busy."

"Ok great! Could you tell me where I can find them?"

"Yeah just go up to any Guard and tell them that you want to report a crime. You can find them just walking around town and there is always a pair at the entrance to keep the bad guys from coming in. At least the more obvious ones."

"Okay, thanks! Have a great day!", I said with a grin.

"You too!"

Most people in Blackbridge and Whitebridge are so nice. The ABB and ABW are despicable for trying to ruin that in order to better their towns. The towns already seem pretty great to me!

So now surer than ever of what I had to do I walked towards the entrance of Blackbridge ready to turn in the evidence regarding Scott Crawford's misdeeds. It didn't take me long to get to the entrance.

I saw two guards there standing off to the side. Not interfering with the people passing through the entrance but keeping watch. I watched up towards one of them.

"Excuse me Mr. Guard uhh sir", I said awkwardly.

"Yes? What do you need?", the guard said blandly with a no-nonsense look on his face.

"I have some evidence regarding a criminal."

"Ok. What is the evidence and who is it regarding?"

"Well, it's regarding a rather important figure so I think I'd better talk about it with the Captain."

"Are you sure? The Captain doesn't enjoy being interrupted unless it's serious."

"It's very serious. I promise."

If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

"Alright then follow me. Hey Jerry. This guy wants to go see the Captain. Can you handle the gate on your own for a bit?"

"Sure thing Stan!"

I watched this exchange between the two guards with curiosity.

They seem like good friends or at least good colleagues. Hopefully, it's not too much of an annoyance for Jerry.

The Guard that I now knew was called Stan led me away and I waved to Jerry as we left. I didn't receive a wave in return but I think that was because he was too focused on his job since he now had to do double the work.

Hopefully, this won't take too long.

Stan led me to the Guard Captain's office. It didn't take more than 15 minutes.

Thankfully it wasn't another maze like the one I had to go through with Melissa to get to the Guildmaster back in Whitebridge. That was a nightmare. I feel like if someone wanted to get to the Guildmaster that bad a maze wouldn't stop them.

The Guard Captain's place looked like a normal house except for the abnormal amount of guards that hung around the area surrounding the building. Stan took me up to the normal-looking wooden door and knocked on it.

"Come on", said someone from behind the door, presumably the Guard Captain.

Stan opened the door and walked inside while I followed behind him, tightly clutching the evidence I'd gotten from Scott's house.

The Guard Captain nodded to Stan and then looked at me.

"So what did you need to tell me?"

"Well, sir I have evidence that proves that a person was using unlawful means to coerce business owner's to sell their businesses to him."

"Oh?", the Guard Captain said, raising an eyebrow.

"That does sound very serious. I assume that evidence is the book you're holding?", questioned the Guard Captain.

"Yes sir", I said handing the book over to him.

The Guard Captain flipped through the book and his brow furrowed.

"Stan, could I ask you to leave the room?"

"Yes, Captain."

I watched as Stan stepped out of the house, closing the door behind him as he left. I was now alone in the house with the Guard Captain.

"So I think I know who this involves but I want to hear it from you."

"Ah of course. Scott Crawford."

The Captain gave me a serious look.

"You know if this is fabricated in any way we'll have to deal with severe pushback from Crawford right?"

"Yes, I understand. Powerful people are never easy to deal with."

"You got a good head on your shoulders. Wish everyone understood that dilemma as well as you do."

"I need you to answer me completely honestly. Is this real?"

"Yes. I promise", I said almost instantly.

"Ok well, that's good. I've wanted to stick it to that no good moneybags for quite a while now ", said the Guard Captain, chuckling.

Well, that makes this a lot better. I'm glad that the Guard Captain also has some beef with Scott Crawford.

"Do you also have something against Scott?"

"Yeah. He threatened one of my friends in an attempt to take over their business and no one messes with my friends and gets away with it."

"Good. That makes me feel even more justified about bringing this Scott scum to justice."

"Stan get in here!", the Guard Captain yelled.

"Yes, Captain?"

"I want you and some others to go bring in Scott Crawford for questioning. We finally have some evidence against that jerk."

"Yes sir. We won't let you down!"

"I know you won't. Have fun!", the Guard Captain said with a wink.

I could tell that Stan wanted to break into a smile at the thought of bringing Scott Crawford down a peg but he tried to keep it down in the presence of his superior.

"So what's your name?"

"I'm Jameson sir."

"Well nice to meet you, Jameson. Very nice to meet you. You can call me Nate when we're in private but I'd prefer if you called me Captain in front of others. I have an image to uphold."

"Ok, Nate. It's great to meet you! Oh, one more thing. I think Scott is from Whitebridge."

"Whitebridge? Nah. Not that many people know this but Scott was born here. He's lived here his whole life so that doesn't make sense. I can see why you'd think that though. For some reason, lots of criminals here seem to have come from Whitebridge. It's rather strange."

"Yeah, I guess."

Eek. The reveal can't happen now. I still need to get higher up into the ABW to find out what their plan is.
