Chapter 37: Aftermath

Chapter 37: Aftermath

Six Years Later…

The Ignis sweeps into dock in orbit over Tuatha. It is your last day aboard her, and time for a long-deserved stand-down until your next command comes to pick you up. Your relations with Helheim, Pyrus, and the other Deathwatch members has been frosty but professional. They don't attend the departure ceremony, but you do find a token of respect on your bedside table when you wake up: a small raven, forged from cave-dark metal. A small brass key lies pinned beneath its claws, a tiny duplicate of the one you 'kept safe' for Wrath all those years ago.

You wish Littleflame or Monat could be with you on this day, but they are long since departed, back into the Tau Empire. Monat to resume his services, Littleflame as a messenger of what transpired on Vrenna and as a token of goodwill. You never did find out exactly what Littleflame was, but you have some good guesses. It is probably artificially born, the same way Faunia is, and is perceived to be less-than-Tau by its fellow Xenos. But that's just fine with you, as Littleflame was more than human enough for you.

You shake the cobwebs from your mind as the Light's Embrace approaches the shuttlepad. Four figures wait at a safe distance for you to disembark. You can scarcely make out their shapes through the streaming sunlight, but you already know who three of them are. Your mother Morrigan and father Vir are waiting to greet you, along with uncle Saor.

The Light's Embrace lands and you disembark. You exchange hugs with your mother and father, and a dignified handshake-and-bow with Saor. You are impressed at his progress since you saw him last. He can meet your eyes without flinching, his grasp is firm, and his scars are finally starting to fade. You turn to greet the last person, and are surprised to meet another ex-Saurlance by the name of Amissa Dannan. Upon further conversation, it turns out that Vir and Yasha had been cut out of the wider House Saurlance by the Matriarch, and had lost contact with the widely-scattered members of the nomadic house. Saor's contact information was out of date, but was enough to start reuniting the scattered House Saurlance under the Dannan name. Amissa was the first, with others to follow in the years to come.
