Chapter 12 - More important than life

Chapter 12 - More important than life

"It's okay, I just accidentally knocked over the vase." Su Hua bent down to pick up the shattered porcelain pieces.

"Let me do it. Don't touch it; you might hurt your hand." Gu Beixian quickly stepped into the bathroom, pulled her aside, casually placed his phone on the sink counter, and bent down to pick up the pieces.

He forgot to hang up the phone.

Su Hua found a trash can and handed it to him, cautioning, "Be careful."

"My skin is thick; it won't cut." Gu Beixian picked up a few large shards and threw them into the trash can.

"Nonsense, who has skin that can't be cut?" Su Hua squatted next to him and helped him pick up the pieces.

Gu Beixian stopped her from touching them, "I had a terrible temper those two years, always smashing things. You must have been so frustrated cleaning up after me every day."

Thinking back on those years of hardship, Su Hua felt a lump in her throat, and tears almost fell.

She quickly lowered her eyelids and said gently, "I didn't feel frustrated, really."

Gu Beixian stared at her lowered eyelashes for a while and said, "You, you're too good-natured to be real."

Remembering what Xiao Yi had said, Su Hua asked softly, "Is my personality kind of boring?"

Gu Beixian smiled faintly, "A little."

"I'll hit you." Su Hua playfully pushed his leg.

Gu Beixian laughed and held her hand.

Listening to the couple's banter over the phone, Chu Suosuo angrily hung up.

With a "bang," she threw her phone onto the car seat.

She was so angry that she didn't speak the whole way.

Back at the Chu Family home.

Seeing Chu Suosuo's fingers bandaged and her face ashen, Hua Qirou hurriedly asked, "What happened to your hand? Why are you so angry?"

"It's nothing, just a minor injury."

"Then why are you angry?"

Chu Suosuo was indignant, "Just a country girl who played nanny to Brother Beixian for three years, and he's so protective of her. I casually said a few words about her, and he got upset and even hung up on me. She was just picking up a broken vase, and he was worried she'd cut herself. He was supposed to take me to the hospital tonight, but halfway there, he got a call from Xiao Yi saying Su Hua got into her colleague's car, and he immediately got out and hailed a taxi to find her."

Hua Qirou couldn't figure it out, "If he cares about her so much, why did he divorce her?"

Chu Suosuo kicked off her high heels, "Who knows. Last time Brother Beixian got drunk, he said the divorce wasn't entirely because of me, mentioning me was just a pretext. I don't know if it was true or just said in anger."

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

"It must have been said in anger."

Chu Suosuo slipped on her slippers and sat down on the couch, thinking about everything that happened today and growing angrier by the minute.

Hua Qirou comforted her, "Beixian married Su Hua in your image, which shows he can't let go of you. You're the real deal; why compare yourself to a fake? Don't rush, take your time, and give him a chance to accept you again."

Chu Suosuo frowned, "Seeing how close they are, how can I not be anxious?"

"Anxiety won't help; you can't rush these things. Think of a way to win him back; that's what matters." Hua Qirou handed her a glass of water.

Chu Suosuo took the glass, pouting and complaining, "It's your fault. A year ago, Brother Beixian could stand up, and I said I'd take a break from school to find him, but you wouldn't let me, insisting on waiting a year. Now look, they've grown close, and I'm practically out of the picture."

Hua Qirou rolled her eyes, "Accidents have aftereffects. Without proper observation, what if he relapses and ends up in a wheelchair? Would you want to take care of him for life?"

Chu Suosuo fell silent and sipped her water.

After a few seconds of silence, Hua Qirou asked, "Did Su Hua accept the check you gave her?"

"She didn't."

Hua Qirou was surprised, "She doesn't care about twenty million? How big is her appetite? Three years ago, for ten million, she was willing to marry a man with lower body paralysis. What's she pretending for?"

Mentioning this made Chu Suosuo angry, "Do you know how arrogant she is? She threw the check at my face, saying if she hadn't married Gu Beixian three years ago, she could have earned ten million on her own."

"On her own?" Hua Qirou scoffed, "A restorer of ancient paintings, is she that capable?"

"I've had someone check; her grandfather Su Wenmai was very famous in the industry, and she inherited his skills."

"So what?" Hua Qirou sneered, "If her hands are ruined, I'd like to see how she can be so arrogant."

Chu Suosuo suddenly widened her eyes, staring at her, "Mom, don't do anything reckless!"

A week later, at noon.

Ancient Treasure Studio.

Su Hua locked the restoration room door and went downstairs to a nearby restaurant for lunch.

She arrived at a Hong Kong-style restaurant, ordered shrimp rice, found a seat against the wall, and quietly began to eat.

Her demeanor was gentle and calm, her skin porcelain white, her features delicate, and her fingers, pale as scallions, held the ebony chopsticks with a refined and elegant manner, making her stand out in the bustling restaurant.

After paying the bill, Su Hua picked up her bag and gracefully walked to the door, raising her right hand to push the glass door.

The door was a bit hard to push. She had opened a small gap when suddenly, a figure outside rushed over and slammed the door open with a bang.

Su Hua tried to withdraw her hand, but it was too late.

A heart-wrenching pain shot through her fingers.

She nearly fainted from the pain.

Her legs gave out, and she squatted down, clutching her left hand as tears streamed down her face.

Her four left fingers visibly swelled, and it seemed like the bones were broken, with blood seeping out onto the floor, stark and red.

In a daze, she heard someone apologizing, "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to." The woman's voice was harsh, dressed in a yellow delivery uniform, wearing a motorcycle helmet.

She took out a stack of money from her bag and placed it at Su Hua's feet, "This money is for your medical expenses. I have an emergency, can we contact later?"

Su Hua was in too much pain to speak.

Through tear-blurred eyes, she looked at her hand.

Her hand, her hand, which she had worked hard for nearly twenty years, inheriting her grandfather's and his ancestors' skills.

Her hand, which she had cherished more than life itself since childhood.

Now it was ruined.

She trembled all over, her face pale, her eyes filled with sorrow and despair.

By the time the restaurant owner heard the commotion and came over, the person who had hurt Su Hua was long gone.

The owner drove her to the hospital.

After stopping the bleeding and taking X-rays, Gu Beixian arrived.

Dressed in a tailored suit and tie, he had left a meeting after receiving a call about Su Hua's injury, handed over the matter to his subordinates, and rushed over.

Su Hua was supported by the owner as she walked out of radiology.

Thin and frail, barely able to stand, her eyes red and teary, she looked utterly lost.

Anyone would feel heartache seeing her.

Gu Beixian's face turned grim as he took Su Hua from the owner, suppressing his anger, he asked, "Who hurt her? Where are they?"

The owner, a woman in her forties, was a bit scared and her voice trembled, "Customers said it was a delivery person, but they've run off."

Gu Beixian clenched his jaw, instructing his assistant, "Find them! Dig three feet into the ground if you have to, but find that person!"

"Yes, Mr. Gu." The assistant could feel his boss's emotions on the edge, ready to explode.

He didn't dare delay and immediately went to investigate.

The restaurant owner didn't dare to waste time either, quickly following the assistant back to the restaurant to help check the surveillance footage.

It would take a while for the X-ray results, so Gu Beixian found a chair for Su Hua to sit down, held her in his arms, and wrapped her carefully, like holding a baby.

Su Hua was still shaking, her hands and feet ice-cold.

Gu Beixian unbuttoned his suit with one hand, took it off, draped it over her, held her tight, his chin resting on her head, his expression stern.

When the X-ray results came, they showed Su Hua's middle and ring fingers were fractured and needed surgery for realignment.

Gu Beixian arranged for the best orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Bai, to operate on Su Hua.

After more than an hour, the surgery was done.

After the observation period, Su Hua was moved to a ward, her fingers swollen like carrots, the broken ones fixed with splints, requiring IV fluids.

She was in bad shape, silent, lying there like a wooden doll, her eyes filled with hopelessness as if the sky had fallen.

Gu Beixian watched her silently for a while, then wiped her face with a warm towel, fed her porridge, and gave her medicine.

Su Hua obediently ate and took her medicine but remained silent.

Around 8 p.m., the person who hurt Su Hua was caught.

The assistant whispered a few words to Gu Beixian.

The colder Gu Beixian listened, the colder his expression became, and at the end, his jaw clenched, his eyebrows twitching with anger.

After taking several deep breaths, he calmed down.

He leaned over to Su Hua and said, "I'll be back soon."
