Prologue: Look both ways before crossing

Prologue: Look both ways before crossing

As a student at a public university, the thing I love the most is the library. It has it all: amazing books on tons of different subjects, quiet nooks where I can be away from all the people, and plugs to charge my phone so I can play games when I should be studying. To be honest, today I have used the last one the most. The desk in front of me has several books on Abstract Logic, which I intended to read when I came here several hours ago, but I got distracted by a notification and next thing I know the library is about to close and I haven't got to floor level 10 on Pixel Dungeon yet. This game is gonna be the death of me.

When I see a librarian coming in my direction, I immediately get up, close the books, and leave. I want him to think I'm such a good student I was reading my books up to this late hour... but I don't know if he's fooled. I get my bag from the locker and return my locker key. In the ten seconds that it takes for the librarian to take the key and give me back my id, I've already gone back to playing the game. Since I'm not paying full attention, I make a mistake and get surrounded by monsters. They rapidly kill me, and I have to start over again. Pshh. This time, I'll try being a warrior. They're sturdier. I select the warrior and begin my dungeon crawl again, even as I walk away from the library. Around the library, the campus is very empty and quiet. But a few minutes later, I see a friday-night campus party happening in my path. Now I've got to floor 3 and found a really good weapon that I might be able to use when I have levelled up a bit, so I wanna concentrate. And I also have to catch my bus before midnight. I decide to go around the party to avoid distractions. I start crossing the road, and at the same time a strong monster appears from behind a door. With the loud music from the party, it's hard to concentrate. I need to pay attention so I don't die right now, before I can even benefit from the luck I had.

Stolen novel; please report.

A bright light and a loud noise call my attention. I look up, and see a articulated bus careening towards me down the street. The street is extra steep at this point and the bus driver was speeding downhill, like they always do this late at night.

Shit. I'm never gonna finish this game.

The bus is less than five meters from me.

Three meters.

Two.

One.

And then, time stops. The bus is so close I can lift my arm and touch it. But I don't, because I'm still holding my phone with both hands. And because an actual real-life angel appeared in front of me, halo and wings and all. I'm not even christian, but if an angel wants to save my life, I'm all for it. I'm sure the gift horse has perfect teeth. The angel speaks, but I can't understand a word he...? Or she? Says. Hm, better not to get too worried about the sex of angels. The angel is asking me something, but in a language I've never heard before. I don't speak Celestial. But the angel is gesturing at the bus and me, and clearly offering me something.

"Oh, you want to save my life? Yes, please, do it!" I nod vigorously so it understands my intent. The angel smiles... Wait a minute, that's not an angelic smile at all, in fact you look quite mischievous, Mx. Angel. What is that all about. Aren't you here to perform a miracle?

The angel waves its hands in my direction, and reality warps around me.
