Prologue: How I died

Just before I jump off this bridge, which will no doubt lead me to death I recall what just had happened that led me to this, literally, life-changing decision.

About 3 hours ago I was still standing in the conference room presenting my novel. Those ungrateful bastards don’t know what true art is. I spent nearly half of my 30 years long life on it. It had everything. A cute furry-waifu. A cool MC. Geez, I even created a whole new language for every race in the story. The dream for any otaku to be honest. Ok, maybe I was the weird one here, but that’s totally unrelated.

Anyway, they did their thing, pretending as if they’d discuss future plans for the book and so on. Of course, I heard them when they said that they didn’t really have the time for me anymore. So they dismissed me and the meeting telling me that luck wasn’t on my side today.

Hah! “Luck wasn’t on my side.” My ass! They can stick that luck in their rich and polished butts for all I care.

After that, I went home. A one-room apartment smaller than any tank-station bathroom with the bed covering most of the rooms space. The meeting made me hungry so I opened the fridge just to find nothing possibly edible. With the rest money of my parent’s allowance and the little money I had left from last month, I went out shopping.

On the way to the supermarket, I went to the nearest anime-shop just to look at some figurines but ended up actually buying one. Sigh. Lastly, I was barely able to afford a small portion of fries at a fast-food restaurant.

All things considered, I was now standing on a bridge, hungry. And to be honest, I really just felt like dying today. So I climbed on top of the parapet and sat down. My legs were completely free. I looked down and saw the moon reflecting on the surface of the water.

While realizing how high it actually was, I gelt the chills down my spine and maybe this wasn’t the best solution after all.

I remembered the fun things in life like the figurine I just bought or even anime and manga in general. Actually, my life wasn’t really that bad, really. Of course, I did struggle to maintain a stable life, but it somehow always worked out in the end, right? Maybe I should just go home and sleep about it. Yes. I can only learn from my mistakes today. My next novel will be even better and I shall get it published!

That’s what I thought anyway when I tried to climb back but my foot slipped away and I fell down back-first.

My mom always told me I should start working out instead of watching anime all day and writing my damn novel. I’m sorry Mom.

My eyes burned, and I started crying when I was half-way to death. There were now people on the bridge looking down on me, screaming.

After about a minute of falling down, I noticed that the screams stopped. Utter silence. No sound of the water below me or the air that is obviously flying by me. Wait, is this death? Am I dead already? Shouldn’t I drown first or feel pain or something like that?? I mean I don’t mind falling down in eternity and not hearing anything. Finally, time for some fucking sleep.

I didn’t let this afterlife thing or whatever bother me and closed my eyes. Just then I heard voices in my head.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

“Is this the guy?”

“Yep, number 69n1n3. Uh, 30 years old. Male. An otaku, all right.”

I opened my eyes. “Is someone here? Am I dead?”

“Oh! I think he heard us.”

“What shall we do?” asked the younger voice to the older one.

“Ahem, you are Mitsugu Shoji if I’m not mistaken.”

I was surprised someone knew my name but still answered. “Ya, that’s me.”

“Well, you see, you are going to hit the water and die if we continue time,” yeah obviously, I mean that’s the whole reason I was on the bridge in the first place and who the fuck are those people, “continue time,” are they fucking Dio or something?? “Anyways our job is to transfer your soul and your mind to another world before that happens. Of course, the people in this world will think you died committing suicide.”

“So it’s like in those animes and light novels?”

So that’s how the afterlife works, huh?

“Yeah, sure whatever. Just sign this and you should be ready to go.”

A piece of paper and a pen appeared out of nowhere and were falling with me.

“I can’t really write that well while I’m falling you know.”

In the next moment, a clipboard was slowly being constructed below the piece of paper with a text I couldn’t read. Probably some god's language. “That’s not what I meant but thanks.”

So I took the pen and signed the contract.

“Can I ask what kind of world I’m getting teleported to?”

“No.”

“...” This isekai thing really is spontaneous, isn’t it?

I slowly began to hear the water beneath and the screams above.

“Well then, young Mitsugu. It's time for your new adventure etc. etc. Good luck.”

“Ah..yeah thanks”

And when I looked down, I closed my eyes, ready to hit the hard and cold mass of water.  Ready to die in this world just so I could start a new life in a new one.

Oh man, I’m so hyped. This really feels like out of some anime!
