Chapter 1: A new character

I threw boxes and barrels over as I ran through the tight alley. Scared of my life I ran as fast as I could. My breathing became difficult, which is indicated to my lack of exercise once again. I’m sorry, mom, I think I’m going to die in this world already.

A few hours ago I woke up in a cave somewhere in the mountains. From the carvings on the walls, I was certain that place was used for prayers a long time ago. The first thing I wanted to check was how my new body looks like. And since I was in a cave without any mirror insight touched myself all over my body. It would have been pretty weird if someone had seen me back there, to be honest. I looked at my hands, my back and eventually touched other certain parts of my body and I came to the conclusion that well, I guess I’ll just sit down every time I want to take a piss from now on. Indeed I now was certain I was a girl. However, I still couldn’t see my face just yet so I looked around and found a bag lying next to an altar. The bag was out of soft leather. When I peeked inside I found several interesting items. The probably most valuable thing was a wallet with unfortunately no money. Do I really need to start my new life in a new world without cash?

Next was a small knife in a scabbard that I simply attached to my belt. With that in my mind, I also wore a white shirt and thin black pants which let me look like some office lady if nothing else. My shoes were made out of black leather what only compiled to my cosplay.

Also in the bag were a small bag with what seemed like small colored stones, matches and surprisingly a necklace with a round plate attached to it. On that plate I read the letters ‘S’ ‘A’ ‘E’ which I would recognize as strength, agility, and endurance if my theory would be correct, however, I really had no way to prove that so I just tugged it back in the bag, slung the bag over my shoulder and was searching for a way out of that creepy damn cave. I’m getting the creeps if I stay any longer in this place.

I found my way out quiet fast as I just followed the carvings on the walls. I really had no other choice on that matter since it was the only light source in the whole cave. I could have obviously use the matches I found in the bag to explore the other tunnels and caves but really, there was no way those matches would have lasted long enough for me to get out and besides, my experiences from the various RPGs I played in my other life told me that I should save as many items as possible so I can at least sell them in a city or village to get enough money to get started.

Which led me to my situation right now. In front of me was a forest and farther, on the horizon, I saw a line of stone walls protecting a city or a village maybe a town. So I just had to proceed in that direction till I was there.

At the wall, they asked for some kind of personal identification. Look, I was just born into this damn world an hour ago what do you even expect from me? A fucking visa? That’s when I remembered.

I tugged my hand in the bag and pulled out the necklace with the golden metal plate on it. I wondered why but the soldiers instantly tensed and let me in without another word of exchange. That’s convenient. Maybe this belonged to someone important.

The city looked like any other fantasy world you’ve ever seen, nothing special at all. I was disappointed when I found no cat-girls walking around the streets.

I wandered around a bit when I made an abrupt stop at what seemed to be a jewelry shop. I stood in front looking through the window. The sun was reflecting on the gold from various goods in the form of bracelets, rings, and necklaces. When I looked up, I saw for the first time in this world how I looked like. My white hair was cut short, which was already obvious however it fit perfectly with the small nose and the small cheeks of mine. I had green eyes that looked tired and exhausted. But all in all.

I was damn cute. Like seriously sweet even. It wasn’t the face of a waifu or anything but more of a best-girl. Seriously if I hadn’t had my eyes on my 2D waifu’s already I would totally have a crush on someone like me. Not like that would even make sense in any possible way imaginable.

I opened the door to the shop and was welcomed by a bell-ringing and an “Ah, give me a second, I’ll be right there for you!” from the back of the shop. Hee, wouldn’t be surprised if I could raise the price for this necklace a bit with this cute face of mine.

Before I could finish my master-plan in securing a solid capital the shop-owner emerged from the back room. “How can I help you, young lady?”

I was a bit startled. Right, young lady... Sigh. A 30-year-old dude getting isekai’d as a girl in her early teenage years is still something I cannot completely accept but oh well here we are. The man stood behind the counter and looked like he hadn’t slept in four days for that matter.

I packed out the necklace and laid it on the counter. “I want to sell this.”

He looked at the necklace for a while then to me and then back at the necklace. “Little miss, this isn’t yours right?” I didn’t know if it would’ve been wise to lie but. “It is. Now, how much can I get for that?”

He sighed. ”It really isn’t yours. You know-” he waved a hand at me “this isn’t something you can buy or sell in this regard. It’s a tool to keep track of one’s growth as well as some kind of boost for adventures.”

Boosting? So it’s like one of those magical items that boost your stats, eh?

“With that said, you can only get this at the Guild. I’m not even sure if you should even be able to take the necklace off since its kinda connected to your body. Well, if you are looking for the Guild-Hall just look to the right when you get out. There is a huge building with a blue flag on top of it. The Guild-Hall will tell you what to do with it. You might even get some money for that.”

With that information in mind. “Well, thank you very much, sir.”

“No need to thank me, little missy,” he said with a grin on his face as he opened the door for me get out. How polite. This body might indeed be useful.

On my way to the Guild-Hall I felt like I was followed by two very suspicious men- actually, they just followed me obviously around and were whispering something like ‘oh shouldn’t we kill her now?’ or ‘no you idiot we are in open space what’s wrong with you!?’ like are they dumb or something? As if I couldn’t hear you just because I was 1 meter in front of you?

I walked faster and heard the steps from behind closing in when I started running. I ran through the half populated street then into a back alley trying to lose them on the way. Those were professionals. Probably hired by that shop owner. He knew that necklace couldn’t be bought so it would make sense why it would be so valuable. What a dick.

I ran as fast I could but couldn’t get them off my ass so I threw barrels and other hindrances on the way down. My legs began to hurt even though my body was way younger than my 30-year-old body from the other world. I saw the end of the alley and was thinking to turn right but as I ran around the corner I bumped into the back of a man which was enormously well built. He, of course, turned around to see who would want to get into trouble with such a man like him- But I looked up to him putting on my most helpless face I could muster and finger-pointed toward the two assassins. The tall man looked down at me and followed way where my finger was pointing at. He stepped in front of me and held out his hands like he was about to slap a fly mid-air. How romantic.

The man then made two fists and swung each into one of the moron’s heads, both crashed against each other and they fell slowly to the ground.

“Aite, this should do.” the big fellow said and turned to me half-kneeling “you are new here, aren’t you?”

I nodded. “I was on my way to the Guild-Hall and they followed me. And when I tried to run away they kept chasing me.” Just play the innocent girl act.

“The Guild?,” his eyebrows rose “I mean I was just on my way there myself but that’s no place for a girl like you, dear.” Dear? Irritated I showed him the magical-necklace since I assumed he could be trusted if he was on the way there himself.

Like the proper gentleman he was, he offered to escort me on my way, since he would go the same way anyway.

On the way, I learned that he is a mercenary who works for the guild and just came back from an investigation on their behalf. An adventurer has been gone for a quest for two months and hasn’t come back yet apparently. Turns out he was dead all along.

The Guild-Hall had a huge fireplace in the middle of the room. Tables and chairs were gathered around and so were many people who were chatting and enjoying their meal. On the right side of the room were doors upon doors where from what I know important people would sit in. In the left corner of the room was the typical reception one knew just from looking at them except that behind the various gorgeous woman behind the counter was a wall filled with liquor and other bottles of liquids I couldn’t recognize. The reception as the bar itself? That’s rather interesting. Not only do they have to deal with idiotic adventures but also with drunk morons. The man who accompanied me told me that I should go to the bar and they’d tell me all the details. So he shook my hand, and we parted ways. He looked at a table with three women and waved which was answered with a woman yelling ‘Glad you are alive James!’ His name is James, huh?

He walked towards them and I headed towards the reception through the many tables and chairs.

“Hello, ma’am how may I help you?” asked the receptionist or the barkeeper depending on the way one looked at it.

I climbed onto one of the ways to tall chairs and leaned forward to show the necklace ”I found this in a cave. What should I do with?” After seeing how people were after it like it was some kind of drug I was about to ask her how to make money out of it. I would probably get arrested if I were to do that and I just know realized that I could probably make a fortune if I would sell this on some black market. Fuck.

“Oh, this is weird it. Is this yours?” she took it and turned the silver plate in her hands.

“It is not, see I was curiously walking around in a cave and found this on the ground.”

“Ah someone maybe lost it but there should be a name on it somewhere” she flipped the piece of metal once again looking closer ”it shouldn’t even be able to take it off.”

“...”

“Don’t worry girl I won’t assume that you killed the owner of this and somehow removed the engraved name.” Excuse me?

“May I ask what happens now?”

She was still inspecting the plate. “Well, I guess we’ll just confiscate this one and let someone look over it. We might get a clue who this belongs to.” She probably noticed that I was staring at it as she asked me “If we can’t recognize the owner and this thing proves worthless you can have it back if you want.”

“Oh yes, please ma’am. You see, I have little money and I might sell the materials to some merchant”

She looked me up and down and gave a disappointed sigh. Someone called her out, and she gave them a simple ‘give me just a minute’ before she turned back to me. “It probably sounds weird offering some kid a job but you could work here.” she waved her hand in front of her as if denying something “I don’t mean any of the quests the other adventures are doing, that stuff is definitely too dangerous for you but you could do some errands for us, we pay well you know.”

I considered a bit. I knew that getting isekai’d without money is kind of a pain but I really didn’t want to get teleported to another world just so I could run errands. “Is it not possible for me to become an adventurer myself?”

Her eyes went wide and she let out a long exhausted sigh “You kids just don’t know what you want. If you want to become an adventurer just say so in the first place do you have your documents ready?” That again.

“I’m afraid not. I lost them on my way here.”

“I see. Then just fill out this sheet of paper for me” she brought out a piece of paper from below the bar and laid it on top of it. “I’ll be busy while you do that just call me when you finish or have a question.

I took a pen out of the cup on the bar and looked at the form. So I began to fill out the boxes.

It felt like I’d create a new character because the first thing I needed was a name.
