Chapter 3 - I'm a boy!

Only a few minutes after getting into his mother's car, Page was being dropped off at daycare. He had watched his hometown from the car's backseat window as Katherine drove, observing how everything had changed. Several buildings were gone, and several businesses were now something else! Page's favorite donut shop was gone, replaced by a bank!

From the fields that Page passed, he could tell that the season was late spring. The air was warm, but the fields hard barely anything growing in them. After watching those fields for a dozen years while he rode the school bus to and from school, Page knew every stage of development for the fields! Their current stage was completely obvious!

Katherine parked her car outside the daycare and walked to the door with Page. She didn't even trust him to walk from the car to the building, a short distance of barely twenty feet. Inside the daycare building, Page felt a strange sense of nostalgia. He remembered going to this daycare, but it was twenty years ago! It was almost like going to a completely new place!

Page walked next to his mother, but he was barely keeping up with her. As she walked at a brisk pace, he was having to run to keep up! Not only were their gaits totally different, but Katherine was in a hurry to get to work. If Katherine didn't get to work in only a couple minutes, she'd be late! If she was late, she'd miss her attendance bonus! Katherine didn't want that to happen, so she made Page hurry!

"I don't know why you're trying to be a pain in my ass, today," Katherine whispered, signing Page into the daycare on a sheet of paper. "But I'll be making sure Connor knows about this."

As Katherine finished up and left, Page was paralyzed in fear! Just the mentioning of the name 'Connor' had him frozen in place! Of course, this name belonged to Page's step-father and Katherine's new husband! He was the kind of man that would hear 'Page made me late to work' and bring down the hammer like a Norse god! If someone said a single word to Connor, Page wouldn't be able to use his butt cheeks for a week!

'I should have chosen option number one!' Page cursed as he stood in the entryway.

Who knew that Katherine had such a hidden weapon in her arsenal? Of course, it should have been Page who knew, but he had forgotten after almost ten years of the weapon being out of commission. Due to a motorcycle accident, Connor could no longer case after Page or throw objects at him at Mach speed! He was safe, but now he's suddenly in danger, again!

"Hai, Page," Someone said at the entrance of the daycare.

While Page was standing in fear, two people walked into the daycare. They were both women, but one was much younger than the other. It was a mother-daughter combo! It was the daughter who said hello to Page, and he turned his head to greet her... But, he didn't remember her name! Of course not, it had been twenty years since he saw anyone in that daycare! How could he possibly remember their names?

"Hi," Page nervously replied, shifting slightly where he was standing.

"Oh, is that your friend?" The mother asked, watching Page. "I thought Paige was a girl."

"Page is a girl!" The daughter cheerfully gleamed, walking toward Page.

He was being talked about in a strange way! His name might sound similar to a certain female name, but he was definitely a male! There was no doubt about it! For a little girl to call him a girl, it was a direct insult!

"I'm a man!" Page countered the two women and stormed away, further inside the daycare.

Past the entryway, the daycare opened up to three rooms. On the left, there was the office. In there, staff members had their meetings and planned activities. The room also had a small television and payphone, neither of which Page was allowed to use. To the right, there was a room for things like eating and changing clothes.

Directly ahead of Page, the direction he walked, was the play area! It was where everyone was currently gathered, and where Page met his first adversary!

Bonk!

As soon as Page walked through the doorway, he was hit by a rubber ball!

"Don't throw things at the door!" A staff member spoke loudly, not quite yelling.

She had an innocent face and wavy pigtails, and was wearing a cute, button up dress. Since when was such a cutie working at the daycare? Page felt envious of the boy who would get to date that beauty! Page had completely forgotten about Connor, getting called a girl, and even being hit by the ball!

"Page, come in," The teen beauty gentry said, beckoning Page inside the room.

Like a zombie, Page staggard forward. When in front of such a pretty face, he had no choice but to obey! If someone like her asked, he might even give up his love for Sakura-chan! The staff member's lips were a wonderful shade of pink, just asking for someone to come and kiss them!

"Hello, little miss," The staff member said, gazing behind Page.

He turned around, only to see who had taken the beauty's attention away from him, and saw the little girl who had misgendered him! The little girl was cute, that was undeniable, but she wasn't a bombshell beauty like the staff member! After all, she was just a little girl! She was also rude!

"Hello, Miss Dawn!" The little girl said, running past Page and jumping into the staff member's arms.

They shared a warm embrace, one that Page surely would have wanted for his own! Not with the little girl, but with the beautify brunette!

"Miss Lisa is out right now, so we're having free play," Miss Dawn said and relinquished her hold on the other girl. "You and Page should play together since you're both getting here at the same time!"

"Miss Dawn, Page is a girl!" The little girl cheerful spoke as if she was stating a fact.

Page was embarrassed! Not only had he been called a girl, again, but now everyone at the daycare had heard him being called a girl! The misunderstanding was now spreading to the other children, who watched the scene unfolding next to them!

"What?" Miss Dawn said, turning her head. "Page isn't a girl. Me and you are girls, but Page is a boy."

'What is this brat thinking?' Page wanted to ask. 'Is she too stupid to see the difference between a girl and a boy?'

Of course, Page didn't say anything. He wasn't stunned, he just didn't know what to say! He could come right out and say everything he was thinking, but that would be incredibly rude, almost the to point of matching with the girl who had called him a girl! Right now, the girl didn't mean anything bad by what she said, it was all an accident. An unfortunate accident!

"No!" The little girl screamed and started crying. "Page is a girl!"

"Listen, Julie," Miss Dawn said. Finally, Page learned the little girl's name! "Do you know how to tell the difference between a boy and a girl?"

"I, yeah," Julie calmed down and said, stifling her tears.

"You can tell if someone is a boy or a girl by asking them!" Miss Dawn said and picked Julie up, setting her on her lap. "Ask Page if he's a boy or a girl."

"Are, are, you a boy or a girl?" Julie sheepishly asked.

"I'm a boy!" Page shouted.

The situation was just too ridiculous! He was standing here and going through all these motions... Just to confirm his gender with a little girl!

"See, he a boy!" Miss Dawn turned Julie around and said.

"Page... Is a boy," Julie admitted. "Page is a boy!"

Just like that, Julie was back to being cheerful! She had been deadset on Page being a girl, but now fully believed that he was a boy! In an instant, everything about her opinion changed!

Truly, this was frightening for Page. Not only had come into contact with such a creature, he would probably have much more contact with them! He was in daycare all the way until he entered kindergarten, and that wouldn't happen until at least another six months! If his math was wrong, he'd have to wait even longer.

At least, Page took solace in the fact that he'd get to spend these days with the beautiful Miss Dawn, a glimmering ray of light in these uncertain times.
