4. Wolf

I watched silently as my arm slowly regrew and remarked, "Oh, how nice."

"How nice?!" Wei Ling exclaimed as he rushed over to inspect my arm. "How in the world are you doing that? This self-restoration ability is similar to that of a slime..."

I thought about what Wei Ling said.

So I guess this ability came to be because of all those slimes I ate? This brings a whole new meaning to the saying, "You are what you eat"...

I held my arm in front of me and concentrated on the strange tingling I felt while my arm was growing back.

My arm suddenly regrew at a rate exponentially faster than before, and within a few moments, it was restored to its former appearance.

So if I gained the ability of the slimes then maybe I would be able to gain the powers of more things that I ate?

I held my hand in front of me, thinking about the metal that was used to make the chains, and focused it on my hand.

It gradually turned a grayish white and hardened.

I felt it with my other hand, admiring how solid and rigid it felt.

"What are you doing now?" Wei Ling asked, confused. "Your hand..."

"Nothing," I replied. "It's time for you to fulfill your promise. Take me to Starbright City."

"Alright..." Wei Ling said, still looking at my hand suspiciously.

As we continued trekking through the forest, I made sure to eat almost everything that was in my way while Wei Ling watched on in shock.

I found more of those blue plants that tasted like honey. They made quite the treat.

Wei Ling wanted to stop me several times when I ate the plant but stopped when he saw that they did not affect me.

Thankfully, no other monsters attacked in the meantime we were traveling.

As night soon fell, Wei Ling told me that we were going to stop for a break and then continue walking by dawn.

As we built a fire that Wei Ling ignited with his magic, he jokingly said, "Y'know, I'm starting to regret agreeing to your request. You won't eat all of our food supplies, right? Haha."

"I don't know, maybe I will."

"Wait, what? Hey, don't ignore me. You were just kidding, right?"

I ignored him, laid on some moss that we gathered, closed my eyes, and drifted off to sleep.

As I was dreaming about eating countless types of food, someone slowly shook me awake.

As I rubbed away the sleepiness from my eyes, I asked Wei Ling who was looking at me with tired eyes, "What?"

"It's your turn to keep watch," he yawned. "I have to get some sleep too. Wake me up when it's morning."

"Okay," I said as I got up to tend to the fire.

Wei Ling lay down, and quickly, snores could be heard.

Hearing that, I started experimenting with my newfound abilities.

I concentrated on my arm and it started stretching and changing shape.

As I focused, I realized I could change the shape of my body to any form or shape I want.

One of the perks of a slime, I guess.

However, my body when changing shape was still extremely malleable and could not be used to attack, as my body was still too soft.

To solve this problem, I tried to apply the effects of the metal as well, and I succeeded.

I changed the shape of my arm into a sword-like shape and used the metal to harden my arm.

After I was done, I admired my new arm and how cool it looked.

I swung my arm, and other than it being too heavy, it was extremely solid.

As I struck the ground with my arm, it split open easily, showing the offensive capabilities of my arm.

I then reverted my arm to its original shape and continued tending to the fire.

Morning soon came, and I shook Wei Ling from his sleep.

"I'm going to catch something for breakfast and then we can continue on our way," Wei Ling said.

"Alright," I replied. "I'll go look around too."

As we walked in our separate directions, I continued grabbing everything I saw and eating it.

After a while though, I felt as if the surroundings had gone quiet and something was wrong.

I didn't have to wait long to realize what was going on, as the wolf that had attacked Wei Ling and me yesterday slowly emerged from behind a tree, growling.

Its fur was charred and its neck was bloodied from our fight yesterday.

The wolf had been tailing us this entire time and chose to attack me while I was separated from Wei Ling, possibly seeing me as vulnerable without Wei Ling.

I changed the form of my arm to a sharp blade, then reinforced it with metallic properties.

This time, I was ready.

As the wolf lunged at me, I raised my arm and slashed down, causing the wolf to dodge to the side.

Unfortunately for the wolf, my arm still carved a long and deep gash on its side.

It growled and licked at its wound, then continued circling me.

It looks like the wolf was desperate for food.

As it leaped at me again with its fangs bared, I rolled underneath it, with my arm stabbing up.

This caused my arm to pierce into the underside of the wolf and I pulled it out, causing blood and its intestines to spill out.

The wolf screamed in pain, bit at my other arm, ripped it off, and fled again.

I slowly got to my feet while regenerating my arm and followed the bloodstains on the ground.

I found it collapsed next to a tree, foaming heavily at the mouth.

For some reason, the wolf didn't look as if it had died from its wounds, but from being poisoned.

Thinking about the fact that it had eaten my arm, something that I consumed must've had poisonous qualities.

I then walked over to the wolf's body, not giving up this chance, and started eating.

A few minutes later, I burped, having consumed the wolf's entire body, not even sparing the bones.

Its meat was quite tough and would probably taste delicious when skewered and roasted.

When I arrived back at our temporary camp, I found Wei Ling skinning a rabbit that he had caught.

"Oh hey, you're back..." His words slowly trailed off when he saw me.

"What's wrong?" I asked, curious.

"Other than the fact that you look like a demon that crawled straight out of hell, nothing's wrong," Wei Ling said in shock. "What happened? Why are you covered in blood?"

"Nothing," I replied. "I had some breakfast."

Wei Ling, seeing that I didn't intend to answer his questions, shook his head and said, "I found a lake southeast of our camp when I was hunting earlier. You should go clean yourself off. They won't allow you into Starbright City like that."

"Okay, thanks," I responded as I walked to where Wei Ling directed me.

And of course, I snacked on different things as I walked.
