Chapter 13: Source of all

"Pfft... Hahahaha! Relax, kid. It's not some mystery---just go refer to a book or something." Principal Yuriko said.

Come to think of it, even Henry told me the same thing once.

"But, since you asked me so earnestly, I'll tell you. It's called reorbis---an extremely rare and valuable material. Once embedded into a weapon of choice, it can make the weapon part of you---instead of making skin contact with your opponents, you can just attack them with it, and use your powers."

"Woah. That is incredible. But then, a weapon is generally in contact with the opponent for hardly a second, so how does that all map out?"

"A layer of the wielder's power is formed around it---so, when it pierces through the skin, it causes prolonging effects, and hence, you won't have to constantly maintain contact. The deeper the cut, the more lethal the effect. However, I'm surprised that you weren't really affected much by it, during our little sparring." Yuriko said.

"So, you really did put your power into the weapon, I mean, the reorbis?" I asked.

"Very little, of course. I'm not sure why it didn’t, but it's interesting. Besides, a proper stab would have resulted in a much more different scenario. And also, for contact-based power users like me, such weapons are best suited."

"And this sword... Is it as lethal as the Honjo Masamune?"

"This one was supposed to be an exact copy of the actual legendary sword, but obviously isn't even close to it."

Copy? So there were knock-offs, huh? But where's the real one?

"Looking at your face, I can definitely tell that you're wondering the whereabouts of the actual blade." Yuriko was spot on.

"So... Where, then?" I asked.

She got up, opened her huge cupboard, and there it was---a magnificent looking sword at the centre, along with several other weapons, like naginata, wakizashi, yari... It's an entire arsenal of traditional weapons. The Honjo Masamune's hilt does have a stone embedded in it, but it's larger than the other sword's---almost the size of a 100-yen coin.

"T-That, is the actual blade? The one in the middle?" I asked.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

She looked at me, screaming "yes" through her eyes.

"Oh my lord. That is INSANE!" I exclaimed.

"Apart from being a splendidly hardworking lady, she's also a collector of the sorts." Taniguchi added.

"C-Can I look at it up close?"

"Nope." She said, and immediately closed the doors of the cupboard, "I only opened it to answer your question, kid. It's not something I can just let anyone touch. I think you should go and have your lunch. We'll be relying on your power to cure Akane of her amnesia. That'll be all."

I guess I understand her position. Nobody would want a national treasure to be in the hands of some random person. But the big question arises---How did it end up here?

"I know you want to ask a lot more questions, but not now, kid. Maybe, in the upcoming days. For now, let there be some mystery." Yuriko said.

"I suppose you may leave now, Yoshida. Yuriko-sama has matters to attend to." Taniguchi said, while opening the door.

"All right, fine."

"Don't have that look on your face, boy. I even took the liberty to change the perception of everybody in the room. Go enjoy your first day." Henry said.

He's right. It's only been 3 minutes. So, I still have time for lunch. That's good to know. I'm getting used to it, now.

Lunch break- Class 1-3

"Why did principal Yuriko call you, Ryou?" Ayase asked.

"Uh, nothing much, just wanted to ask me some questions. By the way, do you guys know anything about this thing called reorbis?" I asked.

"Everybody knows that. Even kids do." Yosuke answered.

"Don't you?" Ayase asked.

"Umm... Let's just say that my knowledge is a bit rusty for now. Could you enlighten me, then?"

"It is the source of our powers---it is believed that the first yurei and rekishiya were created thanks to the stone's power. It's very common knowledge." Yosuke explained.

Source of all power? Why didn't the principal tell me such an important fact earlier!? So that stone is what started everything?

"What about embedding it into objects?"

"I don't know much about that. The only thing I've heard is that these stones are used to channel your powers into the weapon it is embedded in. But, in order to achieve that, rather than a reorbis, a reorbium is required." Ayase said.

"Reorbium?"

"Subcategory of a reorbis---without any power. A reorbis usually has to have some kind of power, but those which have lost theirs, i.e. run out of juice, tend to become what we call as reorbium---capable of accepting powers, but not holding or storing them. Although with the slight difference, people still call it a reorbis, since you can’t really find an actual one. Plus, they look basically the same. Over the course of thousands of years, mankind has almost only found reorbiums." A voice came from behind.

It was the class rep, Tsujihara Fumika.

"Oh. Class rep, right? I'm really sorry about the battle." I apologized, while bowing down.

"That's all right. It was a fair win. I need to greatly improve as well, if I'm going to stay as the representative."

She sounds really modest. Exactly what you’d expect from a representative. No wonder she’s the strongest… well, was, until today. Now that I'm reminded of it, I need to know more about Utsumi---That guy is too mysterious.
