Chapter 11: Monster

Chapter 11: Monster

"Oh crap... how did I forget that?" Ayase wondered.

"So, how did you dodge those attacks so easily? Surely, it wasn't luck." I asked.

"Guessed it right. It was thanks to my power. I call it Distance Accuracy---I can accurately determine the distances between any number of objects, up to a certain range. It's very handy during battles. With it, I determined the speed at which he was attacking, by calculating the distance between his hands and my body, and the amount of time it took to make contact. I had to take those initial few hits to do so, though. But obviously, he wasn't properly making use of his position, and started attacking me relentlessly again, as soon as I provoked him. He stopped defending his body thereafter, and I was able to hit him using fast-step. Damn, that felt good."

"Informative. So, why didn't your opponent use his power?" I asked.

"He must have an enhancement-type power. His attacks were real fast. Must be some speed-enhancing ability."

"Sensei did mention this earlier... What is this enhancement-type ability?" I asked.

"It's just the enhancement of any part or sense of your body. You'll learn about it in Ability Theory tomorrow." Yosuke replied.

This isn't so bad at all. I'm actually getting interested by all this.

"Are you sure you'll be okay with supplementary classes during the weekends?" Ayase asked, in a funny manner.

"It's not your fault you have to face the two monsters---it's just bad luck. Hahaha!" Yosuke said, while laughing with Ayase.

But, Utsumi seems calm. He must have already accepted his defeat beforehand. No, that is never the case with delinquents---they’re too thick-headed.

"So, how did Tsujihara become the class rep?" I asked.

"15 students volunteered to be the representative,” Yosuke replied, “And since only the strongest was to be chosen, they had an official battle royale---all 15 at the same time, on this very open field. 13 of the contestants were defeated by Yoritaka and Tsujihara alone, in just a matter of minutes. The two of them then fought hard, until Tsujihara came out as the victor. I'm not sure as to why the two teamed up for today, but whatever it may be, it isn't looking good for you, Ryou."

So, the two strongest in our class, are my opponents. Dodge and run seems like a really good option now.

10 minutes later

"Team M is the winner. Good work." Mariko sensei congratulated them.

The second match wasn't all that impressive to watch---I'm not sure if they even used their powers that much. Nevertheless, it's time for my match---against the monster pair. Even though it's so cold out here, I'm slightly sweating due to the fear building up inside of me. Okay, I can survive this... I can... Just take a deep breath...

"Stop mumbling to yourself, new guy. It's time. Hope you fulfill your part." Utsumi said.

Everybody's looking at us---they know we're screwed. They have also started whispering to each other. My first impression is going to be really bad.

"All right, take your positions, teams. Aaaaaand... BEGIN!"

Yoritaka and Tsujihara blasted towards me using fast-step---what incredible speed! I can’t dodge it in time…

"What a waste..."

In that split second before contact, Utsumi appeared in front of me, and punched the two of them in their stomachs, and knocked them out. I could barely see his hands move at that speed. What the hell?

Everybody's silent---Absolutely. I can even see some wide open mouths. What just happened? Utsumi suddenly appeared in front of me, and knocked the two of them in one strike. Weren't they the strongest? And why does Utsumi look so cool about all of this? Who is this guy?

"So much for dodging and running, new guy." Utsumi said, while slowly walking away from the open field. Everybody was making way for him, and couldn't even look him in the eye.

"T-The winners are Team C. Good work. That's it for today, you can go have your lunch break now. We'll wrap this up next week." Mariko-sensei said, with a shocked expression.

"What IN THE WORLD WAS THAT!? He beat two of the strongest in our class! In less than half a minute... That was insane!" Yosuke shouted in awe.

Yoritaka and Tsujihara have been knocked out cold---they're not even getting back to their senses. That’s some display of power right there.

"He was the actual monster. Who knew?" Ayase said.

"Did any of you see his movements? I couldn't see how he got in front of me in that short time frame." I asked.

"It was side-step,” Mariko-sensei interrupted, “A variation of the fast-step, where you blast yourself sideways. It isn't hard to pull off, but it is extremely tough to learn. It is mainly taught to military cadets, or sometimes to some of the shining students in Advanced BT-Practical, due to the serious injuries it can cause while executing. While moving sideways at high speeds, your body uses most of its muscles just to maintain proper posture during the landing, and if too much force is exerted for traversing small distances, then muscle tears, or even some fractures, are imminent. It won’t matter even if we’re physically much stronger than normal humans---the force will be too much. And by the way, I came to tell you that you're being summoned to the Principal's office, Yoshida. And the rest of you---go have your lunch. Dismissed." She left, as she said those words.

"But, Yoshida and Utsumi weren't too apart from each other just before the start of the match" Ayase implied, while whispering.

"3.9 metres to be exact." Yosuke answered.

"You could tell that? Oh right, your power." I said.

"He not only executed a side-step, but was also able to land perfectly in that short amount of distance and time frame, and pull off two powerful punches at once. And they weren't just nobodies---the strongest." Yosuke said.

I need to know more about him. It's time I start using my own power.

"Hey, the principal called you, you better get going." Ayase reminded me.
