2. Book mission

Arya wakes up to a scream. Her mother's scream. Arya panics for a moment before she speaks up "Maama! Mamama.. dada!" It is excruciatingly embarrassing to speak like that but it doesn't make sense for a baby to talk coherently. Her mother runs into the living room where Arya is still in front of the closed door. "Arya? Arya! How did you get here?" Her mother said with a worried expression. Her dad runs in right after, he also seems to be in shock. "Just how on earth did she get out of the crib?" Her dad says while her mother picks her up. "I have no clue, honey..." Her mom says and wipes away some sweat on her brow. Her mom actually opens the door Arya was trying to get into, it turns out to be a small office. There is a desk in one corner, with a window above. On the wall, there is a large bookshelf. Arya looks towards the bookshelf with big eyes. Her mother closes the door after checking inside. Probably to check if everything was in order since she was sleeping outside the door.

Her mom gives Arya breakfast, which still freaks Arya the frick out. But it has to be done. Later it is time for her mom and dad to eat breakfast. They seem to be eating porridge. It doesn't seem that appetizing, but everything would be better than her current diet. Her dad gives her a hug before he needs to leave. Her mom waved at him with her arm. Arya played into it and gave her dad a "dada!" before he left. This made him very happy. Good for him.

The next night Arya is ready for more exploration. She feels slightly bad for worrying her parents, but she's not going to stop exploring at night time. Luckily her parents didn't close the bedroom door tonight either. And now she has a goal, she wants to look at the books in the office.

After some difficulty, she is yet again outside the office door. 'There has to be a way to open this damn door!' She focuses hard on the doorknob and it starts to vibrate. After a while she starts to get really sleepy again, so she hurries back to the room. Sadly the crib is too high up for her to easily get inside. She decides to just sleep outside of it.

A few weeks later she still hadn't had any luck with the doorknob. Her parents hadn't closed the bedroom door because she always made her way back to the crib before she fell asleep, well most of the time she ended up sleeping outside of the crib because of lacking stamina to climb back in. Some nights her parents let her sleep between them because they are worried about her climbing out of the crib. When that happens Arya is worried about being crushed. Luckily that has not happened. She has heard her dad talk about getting a larger crib so she would not be able to climb out, that would just be rude!

A faithful night her mother has forgotten to close the office door! Now is the chance to look at some books. She could now easily get out of the crib and make her way out of the room and into the living room. She saw the open office door in front of her, she made her way inside. The only books she had in reach was the bottom row. She read the titles 'How to Be a Good Parent, The System Window (a children's tale), Check Your Magic Talent, The Prince and the Knight, and Beginners Mage Book' there were five books on the bottom row. Arya took out the book called 'The System Window (a children's tale)' She wondered if the system window was the same as her status page. She started reading the book, luckily the universal language comprehension included writing too. It was mostly a picture book with a little bit of text on each side. She went over the important information. 'The status window is a window into our soul. A time long ago the god of effort took pity on our inability to blossom and gave us a tool to see our progress better, by displaying our abilities in numbers. We strive to improve the numbers and get stronger. May we continue our endless strive for greatness' It seems like the status page is literally just a showcase of her abilities. It seems like it doesn't exactly give her anything, even when she leveled up. It simply showed her what she already had achieved. 'Well, seeing numbers going up is certainly rewarding' She hasn't checked her status page in a while so she decides to check it now.

Is it normal that the numbers go up so fast? She didn't know, but probably, since she was a baby after all. They do tend to grow fast. It seems like both and leveled up from reading. Arya is not completely sure what perfect memory does yet. She didn't find it odd that her mana skills leveled up, after all, that was essentially what she did all day. . That made sense she was basically meditating when she tried to train the skill. It was quite annoying that she couldn't see more information about the skills she had.

She continued reading. The book 'The Prince and the Knight' was a romance book so it wasn't that interesting. 'Check your magic talent' was really interesting. It said that if you didn't have the skill you couldn't learn magic. Apparently, it was some skills you had to be born with, that couldn't be learned naturally. was one of them. The book didn't mention other skills you had to be born with. 'That means I can probably learn magic!' Arya giggled to herself before continuing to read. After a while Arya had a frown on her face. The book said that she needed a magic teacher to have any chance to learn it! But maybe the other book 'Beginners Mage Book' can prove otherwise. She sure hoped so.

She was in the middle of reading the new book when her mom suddenly picked her up. 'Noooo I want to read' She thought and started crying, mostly because it felt a bit freeing to cry over the most mediocre reason, and because babies were supposed to cry sometimes. "Shhh, Arya sweetie, what are you doing in the office, dear? And it's so cold in here..." Her mother sighed and took her back to the bedroom. Well, Arya did learn some cool things from the new book but now she needed to wait until next night to test them.

Apparently, you had to visualize what you wanted to do with your magic, then you would get a skill called and if you weren't specific enough something could go horribly wrong. It said that you should always have a teacher to teach you so that they could help if anything went wrong. It also said that there was a skill called that made your spell more likely to succeed. It didn't say how she could get the skill, but she guessed that she just had to say something while casting a spell? She had not tried to cast a spell yet though. The book clearly said how dangerous it could be, took a lot of mana, and if mana gets too low and hits zero, it could be very dangerous to your body. The more complex your spell was, the more mana it needed.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Night had finally come and Arya was ready to try to cast a spell. Her parents had now started to close the bedroom door, so she couldn't go outside the bedroom anymore. She decided on a small bit of water to try to cast. Fire could be a catastrophe, wind was hard to notice in small amounts, earth was messy, so water was the best bet. Oh, and the book said the four basic elements were the only thing you should practice without a teacher. She wasn't sure if it was possible to cast other things or not. She got her book privilege taken away after all! She didn't even get to finish the 'Beginners mage book'.

Arya concentrated hard, she was thinking about a drop of water. What was water made from again? H2O? She was never good at chemistry, and she wasn't even sure if it worked the same way with mana. Was water mana a thing? Maybe that is why you could only practice with the four elements, maybe there are four mana types... she was just guessing at this point. And she didn't get any closer to making any water. Maybe it would help to actually study some water? She needed to remember that next time her parents washed her. Giving up on practicing, she drifted off to sleep.

The next morning Arya was playing with her mom, and suddenly her teeth started itching, or her gums, she didn't really have teeth yet. Why was growing teeth so itchy!? She tried to chew on her fingers to get some relief, but it just wouldn't stop. While chewing on her hand it suddenly dawned on her how much she was acting like an actual baby right now... luckily no one knew she was actually 19 years old. "Aww are you teething dear? You are already four months old, the time really flies by" Her mom gave her a chewing toy. It was smooth wood. Arya was really embarrassed but she started to chew on it anyway. "Mamaa" She said to please her mother. "You know, in a few days your dada will take a day off so we can show you off in the village." She answered with "Dadaa!" For her mom's amusement. She suddenly felt a click like something fell into place. And acting like a baby became much easier. She checked her skills without looking through the whole status page.

That was a lot of information. It seemed like the higher the level was, the better the skill got. And she could sense mana in a 36 meter radius? That was insane! Some of her skills had leveled since the last time she checked. And then she saw the 'Remark' at her skill and her mouth fell open. 'What do they mean apology gift?!' Arya thought. So there were gods here, and they apparently picked her soul up and put it in this place? Why would they do that? "Arya? what is my sweety thinking so hard about?" Her mother asked with a chuckle and poked her nose. Arya blinked and stared up at her mom. She couldn't do anything else than accept reality. "Maama! Hee hee" She said. And her mother laughed. "It's almost like you understand what I am saying" That made Arya gulp. "Maama maa haa baba" she tried to play it off by saying random things. She didn't really know what babies even said... and when she was supposed to start saying new words. 'Gosh, being a baby is hard' She thought to herself.

James' day off came fast, and it was now time for Arya to see the village for the first time. She has always wondered if her parents are well off or not. They seem to mostly eat porridge, soup, and stew. But they did have a decent house. It does look medieval of course but how does it compare to the other village houses? That was something she would figure out today!

The promised time was here, Arya was in her dad's arms and her mother was putting on her shoes. Her dad was ready with shoes on. Her mom opened the front door and what greeted her was a small medieval village. The path in front of their house was brown gravel. The house in front of her was a wooden log cabin, just like their house. She looked at everything with big eyes as they walked down the path. Soon they came to what seemed to be the center of the village. There were small stalls displaying fresh meat, fish, herbs, and other things. A few people walked up to greet her parents. "Aww, what a lovely baby, it is so nice to meet you" A woman talks to her in a baby voice. Arya doesn't give her the satisfaction of an answer. "Tinala, James, it is so good to see you. What is her name?" Another villager asks. "This is our lovely Arya. She is four and a half months old now. We thought it was time to finally show her to the village" Tinala, her mother talks in a warm voice. They soon had a small crowd around them talking about the new baby in the village.
