"Man... why did I even bother."

In a world filled with monsters, dungeons, and mighty hunters to fight them, Alex was just some depressed, powerless teenager who finally decided to end his life after a long time thinking about it. However, he never reached his destination.

25 minutes earlier

"AHHHHH! Run a dungeon Break! "

As Alex was walking towards the bridge where he would end his life, all the people surrounding Alex started screaming and running away, praying that a hunter would save them. There was one exception to this; it was a tall, scrawny teenager with long, messy, and dirty blond hair that looked about 18-19. He was walking with his headphones in, looking straight at the ground, oblivious to the whole situation. It didn't take very long for him to look up, but there was not a single person around him on this usually busy street when he did.

'weird,'  Alex thought.

Noticing that something must have happened, he took his headphones off and put them around his neck only to hear something he didn't expect.

"P-please help anybody. HELP!!"

Alex was a quick thinker. From the look of the nearby buildings, the lack of people, and someone screaming for help, there really was only one thing that could cause this situation these days- a dungeon break.

What happened next really came as a surprise to Alex, who was just planning to end his life; instead of turning around and walking home or continuing towards the bridge, which was now only a few blocks away, he ran towards the girl screaming. Inside the alleyway was a woman who looked to be around the same age as Alex and several short green creatures attempting to surround her.

'those look like goblins, although they are one of the weakest monsters a normal person can't fight them. She will die; I should get out of here.'

"Ahhh!!- huh" At this point, the girl noticed the guy standing at the end of the alleyway saw her chance.

"Please, sir, help please, I'll do anything" Although she wasn't in the right state of mind due to the goblins attacking her, she still believed that there would be no way this person wouldn't help her.

Contrary to her belief, the boy just stood there with a blank expression on his face, indicating he wouldn't move a muscle and didn't care what would happen to her.

'Hmm, thinking about it this way, I'm planning to die soon anyway, so, if I kill myself, I'd probably end up in hell, but if I die while saving someone like a benevolent hero, I would definitely go to heaven. Not that I really believe in all that stuff, but it can't hurt to be a little careful and cover my bases.'

Alex then jumped into action. Despite his stature, he was actually decently strong and a talented fighter, this was primarily due to living in a big city while being poor, he was tough. Alex knew how strong monsters are, even the weakest F-rank monster such as these goblins are stronger than your average adult human. Due to this, he decided to jump and kick at the goblin's side. Even after received a full power kick from Alex, the creature barely moved. While no damage was done he was still able to interrupt the goblin's attack, which gave the girl enough time to move off the wall and start running towards him. Although he did say he would die trying to save the girl, being stabbed and eaten seemed like it would be a little too painful, Alex wasn't very keen to do it.

'Hunters should be here soon to kill these things, and I think this should be enough for a free ticket to heaven.' Alex thought as he grabbed the girl's hand and starting running.

 Unfortunately, when they started running, they noticed they weren't fast enough to escape the goblins. In only a couple seconds, the goblins were right on their tail. Alex started to realize that even a hunter appearing now wouldn't be enough to save them. Suddenly Alex felt the girl let go of his right hand, she then reached into her pocket, and the next thing Alex knew, he felt a puncturing pain in his back.

"UHH"

Although the girl was weak, the reason she was able to last that long against multiple goblins was because she carried a knife on her at all times as protection against rapists. After stabbing Alex in the back, the girl kept running, hoping she would get to the street so a hunter could save her. 

Meanwhile, Alex was lying face-first into the ground with a knife in his back, bleeding everywhere.

'No. No way. That b*tch really stabbed me and left me to die after I saved her.'

Seeing the girl keep running while he was on the ground almost bleeding out, Alex began to just accept his fate.

"Man... why did I even bother."

To Alex's surprise, besides have a knife lodged in his back, nothing else happened; he didn't feel any more attacks from the goblins. This was because the goblins simply skipped over him and proceeded to chase after the girl. The backstabber had never seen this coming, and now that she no longer had a weapon, it was practically effortless for the goblins to kill her. The agony she went through as she was stabbed over and over again was like music to Alex's' ears.

'Serves you right, damn b*itch.'

While Alex wasn't awakened, he did have an interest in monsters due to the effect they've had on his life and the world. Like most people in this day and age, he learned about different monsters' traits, tendencies, and strengths. Goblins, in particular, are a very common monster. They are short and weak, but they do have one thing going for them; they were born and raised to hunt.

The goblins decided to attacked the one who was about to escape and left the other one who was already hurt for later. After finishing the job on the girl, the goblins then turned to look back at the only person left. At this point, Alex, thanks to how long the girl lasted, was able to barely able stand up. He was, however, staggering due to the blood loss.

'It's been a while since the dungeon break occurred, so hunters should be here very soon. I just have to last until then. I don't want to die to these damn monsters. I will die on my own terms. If I survive, maybe I could even get some money for the inconvenience and my injuries.'

Plop

It all came to naught; even after putting in all the effort he could to stand up and ready himself to defend, he just fell back over again however this time for good.

'Oh...I guess I'm a lot weaker than I thought.'

Then just as the goblins were about to attack and kill Alex, he had a strange thought that he hadn't had for a while.

'It's kind of weird to say at this point, but I don't want to die.'

As he was losing consciousness, he faintly heard a voice in his head speaking to him.
