CHAPTER 4: Mission 1: Extraction on Fenrir III

“FIRE!” Atlas yelled.

The hive guards charged towards Atlas and Fenix like they were the first meal they had seen in ages, and quite frankly, they very well could be. As they leaped, crawled, and soaked in the bullets from the helldiver’s weapons, Atlas couldn’t help but feel the most adrenaline he would come to know.

“Atlas, focus the ones on the left, I got the right side, the one in the middle we will have to fight together!” Fenix shouted with his pistol equipped and firing. “I’m down a magazine,” he grunted, “but I think this one is almost down for the count.”

He reloaded swiftly, returning to fire on the farthest right hive guard, just a few bullets had come out when it seemed like one of the shots had hit the jackpot. The hive guard head split open, blood oozing and spraying the ground. He began unloading his mag into the next one.

At this time, Atlas noticed that his weapon fared much better compared to Fenix’s pistol. Both weapons were automatic, sure, but the assault rifle he was using had low recoil and the shots punctured the light armor of the hive guards. Only using half of his magazine, Atlas shredded the first of the terminid scum on the furthest of the left side. With just three more to go, Atlas instantaneously shifted focused to the next one.

An unfortunate situation, he missed a few bullets on this one, and its speed mixed with their leaping ability was making it hard to hit. They were only approximately 25 feet from the two helldivers, and the soldiers were evidently anxious. Atlas quickly reloaded his rifle and started firing again. Two seconds had passed, and another hive guard was now dead. Two left.

“Fuck, fuck, FUCK!” Fenix shouted. “Atlas, I’m missing all of my shots, help!”

Atlas noticed he really wasn’t lying, the guard that was in the middle was untouched and the second target of Fenix’s had only been wounded by a few light pistol bullets. With half of his magazine left, Atlas made the decision to shoot the one that had already taken damage. “What’re you doing?! The middle guy hasn’t taken any damage, we got about 5 seconds and he is jumping on us!” Fenix yelled.

“TAKE OUT YOUR FUCKING SHOTGUN DUMBASS” Atlas retorted.

The last bullets whizzed through the humid air of Fenrir III and Atlas happened to be on target, killing his intended target. The middle hive guard however was now ten feet from the soldiers. Atlas dropped his rifle, knowing he would have to reload, which would take too much time, and he reached for his pistol. He fumbled it, the pistol fell and bounced off of his boot, clanking three feet away. He dove, trying to recover it, but noticed the terminid was in the air coming for his fallen body.

It felt like a movie from a slow motion scene, the idea of death was immediate, but Fenix took his command literally. In the matter of milliseconds, he jumped into the space between the terminid and his commander.

*BANG*

Fenix shot his incendiary shotgun just as the terminid was in front of the barrel, knocking it back a few feet from them, burning to death. The screeching sounds that were made by the creature were pitch deafening in their ears, but without a doubt, after it settled, the final hive guard was dead.

Fenix helped Atlas to his feet and began entering a code to call forth his orbital strike stratagem. He threw the beacon amazingly between the two caves, the red emanating light flashing vertically to give the ship its coordinates. At this time, more terminids were fighting to exit the caves to fight the helldivers, but they were out of time.

In mere seconds, the two helldivers watched, as the strike hit, smoke, limbs, blood, and various foliage wisped through the battleground. Their mobile devices confirming the hive was cleared, showing the extra credits they would receive upon the mission's completion. The two started yelling obscenities, in excitement of course, for they have just killed their first bit of terminids.

Now for the real test, they had to get to that extraction point and ensure every civilian that was stuck, could return to Super Earth, unscathed.
