Chapter 5

The trip lasted for quite some time, and through it all, Juliet was confined to the carriage, except for the occasional bathroom break. She was forced to entertain herself by reading the same couple books they'd managed to bring with them over and over, as well as staring out the window.

It was quite magical the magical sight, observing the adventurer guard that came along with them only reinforcing her excitement, and also dread, over this new and mystical world.

"Mom, why do people become adventurers?" She'd asked. Her mom had looked surprised at such a question but answered it honestly anyways. "Money, dear. Becoming an adventurer is an extremely risky job, riskier than even becoming a mercenary, but one can obtain both status and wealth if lucky."

"Then... How do nobles and royals level up? What does it even do?" She pressed on, determined to get the answer she'd been searching for so long. Her mom had smiled bitterly. "They murder prisoners of war, tied up and defenseless. It's considered a rite of passage for many families, buying high-level beasts and men alike and slaughtering them for the experience."

That'd damped more or less all of her excitement over the subject, but the sheer novelty of the subject kept her questioning her mother for an entire day of the trip. Eventually, her mom had snapped. "Juliet, dear, you cannot truly be interested in such unladylike things, right?"

Juliet had simply looked away, half sheepish, half rebellious, and that was enough for her mother to understand. "Juliet, little ladies like you should not concern themselves with such barbaric things."

At those words, Juliet bristled. She was really starting to despise the whole 'you're a girl, so just shut up and be a sex toy' kind of thing. However, now was not the time to be bothering about such things.

After an entire week of traveling, they eventually reached their destination. It was a relatively small and unknown town. After bidding goodbye to the caravan master, which was more or less the only person they'd talked with on their entire journey, Juliet had promptly been ushered into the village.

Her mom had bought a house for what, in her words, was a ridiculously low price. Juliet still had no sense for money, but she could faintly understand that the standard currency was platinum, gold, silver, and copper coins. 100 copper made a silver, etc, with around 20 copper being enough to buy a person a nice and full meal, depending on the region of course.

Juliet explored the house for a while before promptly begging her mother to let her outside. Her mother had been obstinate, but after much begging and promising to not do anything dangerous, she'd run off to explore the city.

With a sniff of freedom at long, long last, Juliet immediately set out to explore everything her little 5-years old body could bring her to. Thankfully, the town was quite peaceful, so she wouldn't have any trouble if all went well.

So, she set out to explore. The place reeked of every single nasty smell in existence, so much so that she actually got a bad odor resistance after around an hour. Other than that, it wasn't that different from what she was used to on Earth, with the only major difference being the relative poverty and utter lack of anything technological.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

She kept away from the more shady parts of the city, not daring to test her immortality, which had proven to be completely useless when it came to pain. Still, she learned quite a bit simply by observing the city and it's inhabitants as they went about their daily lives.

She was even given a free, if not dirty, candy from an old woman manning a small stall in the market area. She secretly threw it away when she was out of sight, as a single lick had almost caused her to gag.

Still, when she returned when the sun was almost completely down, she was promptly ushered into the bath, given some bread for dinner and then promptly put in bed.

The next day, she was told that, since her mom needed to find a job, and that tutors away from the capital were either nonexistent or far too expensive, she would have to 'self-study'. Apparently, her mom was a firm believer in 'education for a better life', and she was quite pushy when she brought her to the library and given tons of books on several subjects.

Juliet appreciated the effort, but she could already do most if not all math this world knew. Still, she couldn't exactly say that, and she was pretty sure that while her mom had her suspicions about her, she probably didn't think she was reincarnated. So, she sucked it up and spent most of her following days and weeks at home, often alone, reading and completing whatever task her mother left for her in the morning.

It became clear to Juliet that her mother, despite being of obvious low-birth, had had the privilege of higher education herself, and obviously came to appreciate it later in life. And so, Juliet wisely shut up and did her homework.

It was almost a month into their new life, yet another one of seclusion, when something notable happened.

Skills (Elos Dialect Lv.46, Reading Lv.34, Writing Lv.25) Have fused into Elos Language Lv.35

And it was also later in the day that she finally received the skill her mother had been clamoring for her to get, housework. She received it after getting cleaning to level 10, which she didn't really bother grinding that much like she did at the capital since there was nobody to force her to do it. Still, it eventually got there on it's own.

And the skill really did help. While she was already capable of understanding, reading, writing and more or less doing anything with words, the skill made everything just that much smoother.

It wasn't an obvious change, but it was still there. Her mother was ecstatic when she came back, apparently, she'd only gotten the language skill much, much later in life, and for Juliet to get it so damn early only further proved her abnormality.

To celebrate her achievement, her mom allowed her to ask for one gift that she really wanted.

Juliet asked for a bow. Her mother obviously wasn't happy with her choice, but after Juliet threw the biggest tantrum of her life over the damn thing because god damn it, she didn't want to ever again have her fucking throat ripped open, regardless of a stupid 'pain resistance', her mom acquiesced.

She later apologized to her mother for throwing a tantrum, but her mom had just laughed and said, "What kind of 5 years old doesn't throw a tantrum? Be a bit more childish, dear, enjoy your childhood while you can..." And again, she went off with her far-away look. Juliet had left her alone, by now having learned that her mom needed time alone whenever she went off to awake-dreamland.
