By the time the Winter Royal Ball project spilled across the cramped dorm room, Reine Albertine was already a maelstrom of brooding resentment. He slouched against the wall near his desk, arms crossed over his broad chest, every inch of his muscular frame radiating unspoken irritation. His crimson eyes—usually smoldering with confidence—were now like burning coals, glaring down at Deon Fonias as she carefully laid out their plans.
Deon, for her part, was painfully oblivious. Her snow-white hair framed her thin, angular face, the slight shadows under her crimson eyes making her look as unsettling as ever. She perched on the floor, cross-legged and completely engrossed in scribbling notes onto the rough draft of the event proposal. For once, she wasn’t mute around Reine. Instead, she spoke in a low, monotonous drawl, listing out details and edits like nothing was wrong.
Reine, however, knew better. Everything was wrong.
“You’re unusually quiet,” Deon finally said without looking up, her voice deadpan. “Normally, you’d be making sarcastic comments about how none of this matters and how you’ll probably wing your part at the last minute.”
Reine’s blood-red eyes narrowed further. She didn’t even notice how hard he was staring at her, like he could will her to understand his aggravation. But no, Deon just kept writing, utterly unbothered.
“Reine,” she added after a long silence, finally glancing up at him. “What?”
What?
What!?
Reine’s jaw tightened as he cursed her internally. The nerve. The fucking audacity of her to sit there like everything was fine. Like she hadn’t just spent the past two days being dragged around by that damn leech Zen Rivers.
“What?” he repeated, his tone a mocking mimicry of hers. “You’re really gonna sit there and pretend you don’t know?”
Deon blinked, her expression blank as ever. “Know what?”
Of course, she didn’t know. She was too dense to know. Too damn oblivious to understand anything unless someone spelled it out for her in neon fucking letters.
He let out a sharp laugh, leaning forward just enough to loom over her like a storm cloud. “Oh, I don’t know, Deon. Maybe the fact that you’ve been letting that freak Zen Rivers climb all over you for two days straight like some lovesick puppy?”
Her head tilted slightly, confusion etched into her pale face. “Zen?”
Reine threw up his hands, incredulous. “Yes, Zen! You know—loud, clingy, treats you like his personal stress ball? Ringing any bells, or should I start drawing pictures?”
Deon blinked again. “Oh, him. What about it?”
“What about it?” Reine’s voice pitched dangerously low, his sarcasm dripping with venom. “Well, for starters, you let him sit you on his lap in the cafeteria today, Deon. On his lap.” His hands gestured wildly as he spoke, like that single moment was the pinnacle of all human indecency. “Do you just… let anyone touch you like that? Or is this some special privilege for Zen Rivers?”
Deon frowned, finally setting her notebook aside. “He needed help with his homework.”
“Oh, that’s why he kissed your forehead? Because that’s totally normal tutoring behavior.” Reine’s voice was practically vibrating with mockery now, his blood-red eyes locked on hers. “What next, huh? A full make-out session because he didn’t fail math?”
Deon stared at him, unblinking. “You’re being irrational.”
“And you’re being ridiculous,” Reine shot back, jabbing a finger in her direction. “What the hell even is this? Is Zen the new charity case now? What, Principal Parlor couldn’t find anyone else for the job?”
“He offered me good money for it,” Deon said calmly, her voice unchanging. “The job pays well. We need it.”
Reine paused, his jaw clenching. She wasn’t wrong about the money. They did need it. But still— “And that’s your excuse? That’s why you’re letting some random idiot grope you in public?”
“Groping?” Deon’s brows furrowed faintly, genuine confusion crossing her face. “He hugged me, Reine. That’s not the same thing.”
“It’s close enough,” he muttered, running a hand through his thick black curls in frustration. “And you didn’t even answer my question—how many people have you let touch you like that, huh? Or is it just Zen now? What’s next, holding hands with the entire student body?”
Deon’s head tilted again, her expression completely unbothered. “Why does it matter?”
“Why does it—” Reine cut himself off with a sharp, humorless laugh, his hands curling into fists at his sides. He couldn’t believe her. She didn’t even get it.
