The Seer’s Man

The Seer’s Man

“An omerta is a verbal promise similar to the “Oath” ability of a Godfather. However, it usually takes three people or more to make an omerta valid. Assuming that you and the Seer are the parties involved in the vow, I’m going to be the observer of this vow. The vow can only be rendered invalid in one of two ways. The first is if there is a mutual agreement to nullify it, and the second is to kill the observers before taking actions. You usually make a vow and state a sacrifice if you break the vow.”

Liu Feng was more interested in Zen now. The child grew up as the third young master of the Taro family. Why did he not know about the omerta? The Taro family must be hiding a lot of secrets. In that case, they must have really sent Zen to this school, hoping for his death.

“I’ll start. Liu Feng, second heir to the Lau Triad Family, vow to take Zen Taro under my protection from this moment forth. If the omerta is broken, I will cut my hair short and renounce my birthrights.”

There were many gasps from outside the kitchen. Cut his hair?! The Seer’s famous long hair served not only an aesthetic appeal but also a practical purpose. It was physical proof of his loyalty to his older brother, the Lau family’s true heir. Why was the Seer willing to place such a high stake for this omerta?! Who was Zen Taro?

At this moment, none of the students knew that the cameras did a close-up shot of Zen Taro and Liu Feng. Their omerta was one that would start a wave of change in the Godfather High School that not even the Godfather would be able to predict.

Zen thought about it. He didn’t have much to wager on. He also didn’t think his birthrights or affiliation with the Taro family was worth anything. Instead, he decided on a different bet.

“I don’t have anything of much value for the omerta. My family wouldn’t care if I lived or died so instead, let me put something else on the line for the omerta.”

Sasha nodded, and Liu Feng didn’t object. Zen took a deep breath. This was it. Having died once, Zen knew how scary that experience was. However, that experience made him more sure about the price he was putting on the line.

“Zen. No last name and nothing noteworthy to mention. I’m renouncing all affiliations with the Taro family from this moment forth. The omerta is between Liu Feng and me. In return for protection, I will cook for you whenever you ask for it. Should I fail to uphold my end of the deal… you can have my life.”

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

Murmurs rose from the crowd behind, and Sasha nodded. Having a strong ally like Liu Feng was good. She was happy for Zen as a big sister. However, the part about renouncing affiliation with the Taro family? She didn’t know why Zen chose to do it. Without his family’s name and backing, wouldn’t that put him on the same level as an ordinary citizen?

Thrilled that Zen agreed to the omerta, they sealed the deal with Sasha as a witness. As there was no documentation, Liu Feng proposed an old fashioned method. They sealed the deal by making a small cut on their fingers and swiped the blood on each other’s wrists. Zen followed Liu Feng’s actions and winced as the knife cut his pinky a little too deeply.

“I, Sasha Angeloff, witness the omerta between Liu Feng and Zen.”

With that, the deal was over, and Liu Feng turned to the peeking crowd outside the kitchen.

“You heard it. This is my man,” he pulled Zen close to him in a side hug. “Anyone messing with my man will face the consequences. I know how to make your life a living hell without killing you.”

The blinding smile made half the crowd run away in fear although Liu Feng took no notice.

“I heard that you call Sasha a sister. If you like, you can call me Brother Wind.”

Again with that smile! Zen was starting to get used to the sudden adoptions. Liu Feng didn’t seem like a bad person. Despite his scary reputation, he was still a lovely person to talk to.

“Understood, big brother Wind!”

Sasha blushed when Zen flashed the blind man an angelic smile. Liu Feng was also happy. Like Sasha, he didn’t have any younger brothers. With a considerable height difference, Liu Feng patted the shorter boy on the head.

“Big brother has to leave now, there are some things I have to do. Have fun with Sasha, alright? If anyone bullies you, let me know. I’ll talk to them.”

Zen laughed nervously. He couldn’t see the Seer having a friendly chat with his bullies over a cup of oolong tea, but he nodded anyway. Assured that his man and precious cook was in good hands, Liu Feng turned around to leave.

The students at the kitchen entrance parted like the Red Sea and bowed humbly. Unlike his gentle and warm demeanour from earlier, the smile was nowhere to be seen, and the aura around Liu Feng turned frosty. Liu Feng didn’t change. He was simply a different man around Zen.

Sasha heaved a sigh of relief after Liu Feng left even though Zen still looked clueless. Instead of worrying about his big sister’s strange reaction, Zen turned to the people outside the kitchen.

“Would anyone want a free meal? If it is within my abilities, I should be able to make them. In exchange, shall we be friends? I’d like to see your character profile cards as payment for the meal!”

The cheerful announcement from the only decent cook in this school instantly made the crowd forget about their fear. Hunger was a predominant instinct that outweighed fear in dire circumstances.

Sasha almost couldn’t breathe when the mob outside dashed in and took over space in the kitchen, yelling their orders enthusiastically at Zen who was over the moon. The sniper decided to wait outside instead. If Zen wanted to spend his afternoon cooking for over twenty people, she would accompany him. Naturally, it was out of her sisterly concern and absolutely not to ask for a special snack later!
