Chapter 4

Helping Alaric Feel Better

Alaric slowly woke up with bad pains in his head and arms and legs. His friend Mara was kneeling over him looking worried. She put her hands on his chest and used healing magic to make him feel better. Wisps of gentle blue energy flowed from her palms into Alaric's body. Soon he could move a little without bad pains.

Mara helped Alaric sit up, leaning against a rocky wall. Alaric started to remember what happened. They had been in some dark caves looking at weird pulsing crystals that make people feel sick. Mara said the crystals drain away your life energy, even hurting magic users. Giant monsters guarded the crystals. Mara and Alaric barely got away before the crystals and monsters made Alaric too sick.

A Plan to Save Magic

As Alaric felt stronger from Mara's healing spell, she said "Your magic alone can't save our world anymore. We need to work together." She meant they couldn't fight the people of Nullcrest and their machines that were hurting magic all by themselves.

Mara kept talking as she healed Alaric. "Those soulless machines are messing up the magical balance that's important for life. Their dumb rules also try to stop magic talents." Mara did not like how the rules from Nullcrest stopped magic users from using their talents freely to help people. And their huge factories making machines and weapons were hurting the natural magic streams that flow under the land too.

An Old Magic Answer

Mara had an idea that some very ancient writings about magic might help them. From long ago when magic was first found, people wrote down how magic worked together with nature. If they could understand this old knowledge, maybe they could stop the damage Nullcrest's machines were causing to magic. Mara thought the writings might show them a way to fix the broken magical balance of the world.

Even though Alaric was slow to trust outsiders, he saw that Mara was brave and truly trying her best to help against Nullcrest. So together they travelled far into an old deep forest. Mara could feel magical energy lines in nature. These special senses led them onwards for days until they found some ancient magical ruins hidden in the forest. Mara felt sure some important clue to stopping Nullcrest would be found in this forgotten magical place. They didn't have much time left before Nullcrest's soulless machines destroyed all magic if they couldn't figure out the old writings!

Working Past Differences

Alaric was learning that even people very different, like Mara from a different background and magical tradition than city wizards like him, need to work together with trust to solve big problems. Mara might understand ancient nature magics more than academic magic scholars, but solving this crisis needed everyone to contribute talents together, not keep apart.

At the ancient ruins, Mara's magical senses tingled strongly near some very weathered stone tablets with glyphs and writing partly covered in moss...

A Hope to Save Magic

After many hours, Mara leapt up with a joyous shout that made Alaric jump! She had deciphered part of the crumbling glyphs that showed a map of magical energy lines and tunnels crisscrossing the realm. The recordings said certain gate tunnel rituals could redirect and heal damaged ley lines if performed properly by cooperative magic users working in harmonic balance.

This was the clue they desperately needed about the old magical knowledge! Now they had a real hope to save magic by fighting off the damage from Nullcrest's cruel machines. Perhaps city and nature magic users working harmoniously could reroute good energy back into the broken magical landscape, blocking the shrinking effects from the evil weapons and factories.

With Mara's help reading the tablets, Alaric's eyes were opened to powerful nature magics he had ignored in the city wizard towers where only human talents were cultivated. He felt ashamed remembering how arrogantly impatient he was always brushing aside Mara's patient explanations about land magic energies. How wrong to think civilized people were so above the primal forests and magical creatures. Now with magic itself in peril, cooperation following Mara's lead to decipher the old glyphs offered a slim hopeful chance against Nullcrest and the spreading blight destroying all natural and magical balance slowly bit by bit.

Journeying Onwards with Hope

Alaric apologized sincerely to Mara who gladly accepted it with her kind graceful manner. Their emerging friendship and trust felt somehow even stronger after clearing the air about narrow viewpoints too small for the huge problems they now faced together. After more resting and taking copies of the informative ancient tablet maps and ritual templates, Alaric and Mara journeyed back out of the deep forest. They moved slowly and deliberately, no longer an exiled outcast wizard fleeing alone and a tribal nature guardian scrambling reactively. Instead now together they followed destiny's call as partners on an urgent quest to restore magic's essential balance and flowing currents aligned with both culture and nature. Against the vast army of Nullcrest spreading blight bit by bit, Alaric and Mara carried a seed of struggling hope - some ancient knowledge thought lost rediscovered just when things looked most grim. Destiny's strange fortune sometimes ripens a slender fruit despite bitter seasons killing other plants all around... if stubborn gardeners keep tending the frail soil until the unknown yield finally manifests.
