Humans came to Dirak's planet not so very long after they'd discovered planet Ground. Then, after finding some peaceful people who wanted to learn, and passing on some skills and knowledge,  they left to explore other places. The locals called some of the knowledge they left "wizardry", since, well,  what else was it? But that was all a long time ago for Dirak's people; back in the troubled times of the princes, the pogroms and worse. Humans occasionally visited, or left messages when they passed, but the last visit had been a decade ago or more, and they certainly didn't talk to anyone but wizards.  Wizards didn't talk to most people either, or get involved in politics, or ... pretty much anything, in fact there were jokes about it.None of that was Dirak's concern anyway; he wasn't going to be a wizard any more. He'd failed his ethics exams, repeatedly, and while his teachers hadn't thrown him out for that, they had when he put his ethics into action, and intervened. Just like wizards don't do. So, he needed a new job, a new life, a new home. This story fits in my Gift and Power "universe", but is almost entirely from the non-human perspective. It can thus pretty much stand on its own.
