“Okay, are you ready?” Zack asked, bouncing on his feet beside me, his undead excitement palpable.
“Ready? For what, exactly?” I replied, glancing nervously at the glowing scroll in our hands. “You know this could go horribly wrong, right?”
“Sure! But it could also go incredibly right!” Zack said, grinning. “Imagine it: we unlock our hidden powers, and suddenly we’re the coolest duo at Grimmoor Academy!”
“Right, and if it fails, we’ll be the laughingstock of the school,” I shot back. “Not exactly my idea of a good time.”
“Come on! Where’s your sense of adventure?” Zack urged, his eyes sparkling. “We’re already in a secret chamber beneath the school! What more do you want?”
“Not to be turned into a ghost, for starters,” I replied, rubbing my temples. “But fine. Let’s get this over with.”
“Great! Let’s read the spell!” Zack exclaimed, excitement radiating from him.
I took a deep breath and nodded. “Together on three?”
“Together on three!” he confirmed, and we positioned the scroll between us.
“One… Two… Three!”
In unison, we began to read the incantation, our voices echoing in the chamber, blending together in a strange harmony. As we spoke the last words, a pulse of energy surged through the room, and the scroll erupted in a brilliant glow.
“Whoa!” I exclaimed, shielding my eyes. “What’s happening?!”
“I don’t know! Just keep reading!” Zack shouted, his voice barely audible over the energy’s roar.
The chamber shook violently, and the scroll disintegrated into a shower of glowing sparks that swirled around us. “This is not what I expected!” I yelled, feeling the energy wrap around my body.
“Me neither!” Zack shouted, but his expression was pure joy. “I feel… different!”
“Different? Like how?”
“I’m not sure! But I think I can feel… something!” Zack said, his eyes glowing faintly.
“Something? Like what, exactly?” I asked, panic rising in my chest.
“Like… like I can sense things! Like the presence of ghosts and… and…”
“Zack!” I interrupted, my heart racing. “Focus! What’s happening to me?”
“I don’t know! Just… try to harness it!” he said, waving his hands dramatically. “Think about what you want!”
“Think about what I want?!” I shouted, bewildered. “I just want to survive this!”
In that moment, I felt a surge of energy rush through me—powerful, exhilarating, and terrifying all at once. “Okay, okay! Let’s see what happens!”
Suddenly, I felt my body tingle, and a burst of energy shot out from my fingertips. “Whoa! Did you see that?!”

“I did! You just zapped the wall!” Zack exclaimed, eyes wide.
“I just zapped the wall?!” I repeated, flabbergasted. “How is this even happening?”
“I don’t know, but it’s awesome! Try it again!” Zack encouraged.
Taking a deep breath, I concentrated, focusing on the energy swirling within me. “Okay, here goes nothing!” I said, raising my hands. Another surge of energy shot out, this time illuminating the entire chamber.
“Wow! You’re like a human flashlight!” Zack laughed, clapping his hands.
“A human flashlight? This is what I’ve become?” I sighed, shaking my head. “I was hoping for something cooler.”
“Trust me, this is cool! You just need to learn how to control it!”
“Control it? Like how?”
“Think about the energy! Focus on directing it!” Zack said, bouncing excitedly. “Give it a target!”
“Alright, target… target…” I mumbled, scanning the room. “How about that old statue?”
“Perfect! Aim for the statue!” Zack said, pointing dramatically.
I focused on the statue, envisioning the energy flowing from my fingertips to it. “Here goes!” I shouted, and with a wave of my hands, I directed the energy toward the statue.
With a zap, the energy struck the statue, causing it to glow and shimmer. “Did it work?” I asked, breathless.
“Totally!” Zack cheered, his eyes wide. “You did it! You actually hit it!”
“I hit it?” I looked at the statue, which now sparkled with a faint glow. “This is insane!”
“Now, try something else!” Zack urged. “What else can you do?”
“Uh… I don’t know!” I admitted, feeling overwhelmed. “What if I accidentally blow something up?”
“Dude, you’re a human with powers! You can’t blow anything up! Just try!”
“Okay, okay! Let’s see…” I thought for a moment. “How about I try to make a light?”
“Light? Like, just light?” Zack asked, skeptical.
“Yeah! Like a ball of light!” I said, concentrating again.
I focused hard, envisioning a small glowing orb in my hands. “Come on, come on…” I murmured, and suddenly, a small sphere of light appeared, hovering above my palms. “I did it!” I shouted, exhilarated.
“Awesome! You’re like a magical lantern!” Zack exclaimed, clapping his hands.
“Magical lantern? I can live with that!” I said, tossing the orb into the air, where it floated like a tiny sun.
“Now you have to show the others!” Zack said, bouncing in place. “We need to share this amazing discovery!”
“Share it? You mean let everyone know I’m a human flashlight?”
“Exactly! This is epic! Think of all the cool things we can do!”
“Okay, but what if it doesn’t work for anyone else?” I asked, suddenly feeling nervous.
“Don’t worry! You’re our secret weapon!” Zack grinned. “Let’s head back! We’ll figure this out together!”
“Fine, but if I end up being the class pet, I’m blaming you,” I said, rolling my eyes.
We made our way back to the library, excitement coursing through me. “Can you believe it? I actually have powers!” I said, grinning at Zack.
“Of course! You were always meant for this!” he replied, beaming.
As we entered the library, I noticed a few students gathered around, chatting excitedly. “Hey, everyone! Check this out!” Zack shouted, waving his hands.
“What is it?” a witch asked, her curiosity piqued.
“Alex just unlocked some hidden powers!” Zack proclaimed, clapping me on the back.
“Powers? Like what?” a vampire asked, raising an eyebrow skeptically.
“Like this!” I said, raising my hands and conjuring the glowing orb again.
The room fell silent as the orb floated above my palms, illuminating the faces of my classmates. “Whoa!” they gasped in unison.
“Okay, that’s actually impressive,” the vampire admitted, nodding slowly.
“Not bad for a human!” a werewolf added, grinning.
“Now, let’s see what else you can do!” the witch urged, excitement in her voice.
“I’m not sure! I’m still figuring it out!” I replied, feeling the pressure mounting.
“You got this! Just focus!” Zack encouraged. “You’re a natural!”
As I concentrated, I felt the energy surge within me again. “Alright, let’s try something bigger!” I declared, determination flooding my veins.
With a wave of my hands, I directed the energy into a shimmering light that filled the entire room, casting colorful shadows on the walls.
“Whoa!” the students gasped, eyes wide with amazement.
“Alex is officially the coolest student at Grimmoor Academy!” Zack shouted, cheering.
I couldn’t help but grin at the exhilaration of the moment. I had stepped into a world I never thought I’d belong to, and now I was embracing it fully. Together with my friends, I was ready for whatever adventures lay ahead. The power was mine, and I was just getting started.
