After my triumphant debut as a sandwich ghost, I was feeling surprisingly confident. “I can’t believe I managed to make everyone laugh,” I said to Zack as we left the classroom. “Maybe this whole Grimmoor Academy thing isn’t so terrifying after all.”
“See? I told you! It’s all about embracing the weirdness!” Zack replied, bouncing slightly on his undead heels. “So, what’s next on our agenda?”
“Survival 101 said something about a nighttime adventure…” I trailed off, squinting at the flickering lights that lined the hallway.
“Nighttime adventure?! Awesome!” Zack exclaimed. “I love adventures! Especially when they involve sneaking around!”
“Wait, sneaking? Why do we need to sneak around?”
“Because it’s more fun! Plus, we might run into some ghosts! Or even a werewolf!” he said, practically vibrating with excitement.
“Right. Because that’s what I want—more run-ins with terrifying creatures,” I said, rolling my eyes.
“Oh, come on! What’s the worst that could happen?”
“Uh, I could end up as a midnight snack?”
“Pshh, you’re fine! Just stay close to me!”
With a resigned sigh, I followed Zack as he led the way through the maze of corridors. “So, what’s the plan?”
“Let’s find the courtyard! I heard it’s super spooky at night!”
“Great. Spooky courtyards. Just what I needed,” I muttered.
As we turned a corner, we stumbled upon a group of students gathered around a flickering candle. “What are you guys doing?” Zack called out.
“We’re summoning the spirit of the Midnight Snack!” a witch replied, her eyes gleaming with mischief.
“Midnight Snack? Sounds delicious!” I said, raising an eyebrow.
“Not that kind of snack!” another student shouted. “It’s a ghost that grants wishes if you offer it your favorite midnight food!”
“Okay, now you have my attention!” I said, intrigued. “What’s your favorite food?”
“Chips!” a werewolf shouted, tossing a bag of chips into the center of the circle.
“Pizza!” another chimed in, holding up a slice.
“What if I offered a sandwich?” I suggested. “Would that work?”
The group looked at me, wide-eyed. “A sandwich? That’s bold!” the witch said.
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
“Bold is my middle name,” I replied, puffing out my chest.
“Alright, let’s see if it works!” the witch said, motioning for me to join.
I pulled out a sandwich from my backpack—thankfully, I’d packed an extra for emergencies. “Alright, here goes nothing!” I said, placing the sandwich in the center of the circle.
“Spirit of the Midnight Snack, we summon you!” the witch declared, waving her hands dramatically. “Please grant us a wish!”
Everyone held their breath as a gust of wind swept through the courtyard, extinguishing the candle flames. “Whoa!” I exclaimed, stepping back.
“Is it working?” Zack whispered beside me, eyes wide.
Suddenly, a shimmering figure appeared above the sandwich, its eyes glowing eerily. “Who dares summon me?” it asked, voice echoing like a distant thunderstorm.
“Um, it’s just a sandwich!” I blurted out, realizing the absurdity of the situation. “And a group of friends looking for a little fun!”
The spirit floated closer, examining the sandwich. “Interesting… I have not seen a sandwich in centuries.”
“Yeah, they’re pretty popular,” I said, trying to sound cool. “What do you think? Want to grant us a wish?”
“I am the Midnight Snack Spirit! I can grant you one wish, but it must be food-related!”
“Food-related?” I asked, glancing at Zack. “What should we wish for?”
“More food!” Zack shouted.
“More food? Really?” I laughed. “How about something a little more exciting?”
“Like what?” Zack shrugged.
“Maybe we could wish for a feast!” I suggested, excitement bubbling up. “An epic midnight feast with all our favorite foods!”
“Yeah! A feast!” the witch cheered, and the other students nodded in agreement.
“Very well!” the Midnight Snack Spirit said, raising its hands. “Your wish will be granted!”
With a wave of its spectral hand, a table appeared in the courtyard, laden with every conceivable dish—pizzas, burgers, fries, and yes, even more sandwiches. “Whoa!” I exclaimed, eyes wide. “This is incredible!”
“Dig in!” the witch shouted, racing toward the table.
As the group rushed to grab their favorite foods, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of camaraderie. “This is amazing!” I said to Zack as we piled our plates high. “Who knew summoning a ghost could lead to this?”
“Right? This is the best midnight adventure ever!” Zack said, shoving a slice of pizza into his mouth.
I took a bite of my sandwich and grinned. “This is definitely better than becoming a ghost’s snack.”
Suddenly, a loud howl echoed through the courtyard, and everyone froze. “What was that?” I whispered, glancing around nervously.
“Werewolves!” a student shouted, eyes wide.
“Relax! It’s just the pack! They’re probably here for the feast!” Zack said, waving his hand dismissively.
“Just the pack? You make it sound so casual!” I said, heart racing.
The howl grew louder, and soon a group of werewolves emerged from the shadows, sniffing the air. “Did someone say food?” one of them shouted, tongue lolling out.
“Uh, yeah! We summoned a ghost and got a feast!” I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.
“Mind if we join?” another werewolf asked, licking its lips.
“Um, it’s a free feast…” I said, glancing at the others. “As long as you don’t eat us.”
“Deal!” the lead werewolf grinned, bounding toward the table.
“Great. Now we have werewolves at the feast,” I said to Zack, who was already piling food onto a plate.
“More the merrier!” he said, shrugging.
As the werewolves joined the party, the courtyard erupted in laughter, food flying everywhere as we all dug in. “This is amazing!” I shouted over the noise.
“See? Midnight adventures are the best!” Zack said, his mouth full.
“I guess I can get used to this,” I said, finally feeling like I belonged.
“Hey! Let’s make a toast!” the witch suggested, raising a slice of pizza. “To friendship and epic midnight feasts!”
“To friendship!” everyone echoed, raising their plates.
As we all cheered, I couldn't help but feel a sense of joy wash over me. I was no longer just a scared human in a supernatural school; I was part of something special. And as I took another bite of my sandwich, I realized that maybe, just maybe, this strange world was exactly where I belonged.
