----------------------------------------
- Well, give me a report, Nano.
Nivea, Asus and Salida had just come out of the Constable's private room and now only Nano was there. The other members of the Protection Team had stayed inside the Federation to protect the Kemonos, so only Kin and Nano had been able to see the fight that had taken place in the Justice Desert. However, Kin was still unconscious, so only Nano was in front of the Constable.
- Yes, ma'am.
She began to tell what she had seen and what she had done; even the rescue of Kin. Despite the fact that he was her best friend, she told everything objectively and did not try to make excuses or use her heart to make parts of her sentences softer or more aggressive. Even though she was worried about how Mrs. Maslow would react, she couldn't afford to lie or hide things from her. However, she trusted her not to be too harsh on her judgment. When she finished, she stared at Mrs. Maslow, waiting for a response from her. She played with a pen in her hand without saying anything, observing Nano without giving the slightest clue about her emotions.
She hadn't been at the Federation the whole time, but she herself was surprised at the horde that had attacked the Federation. To be warned by this young Goddess all of a sudden and see so many Longers at once... Especially four level 9s. The fact that only three Kemonos had managed to defeat one was still unbelievable, but Maslow had so much confidence in these beloved Kemonos that to her, it was just normal. She stopped playing with her pen and smiled.
- ... I see. Thank you, Nano," she said.
The Kemono in front of Maslow bowed out of respect and replied with a small "You're welcome". Even though she was the leader of the Protection Team, she was still impressed by Mrs. Maslow's Aura... Even when she was resting, it was so... powerful.
- I'll conduct my own little investigation into the Longers' attack," Maslow told her, chewing on the pen. I'll ask Salida to pay more attention to the oceans and the members of the Lines of Defense to pay more attention.
- I was wondering, Mrs. Maslow…
- Hmmm...?
- Even though I couldn't observe everyone, since I was looking after Kin, I didn't see Starsky or any of her team at all... Where were they?
Nano knew that Mrs. Maslow had spoken with Starsky just before she spoke with Salida, Asus and Nivea. With an attack of this magnitude, it was strange that she hadn't intervened, especially since she was a Kemono who was in charge of the Justice desert…
- That's why I'm very interested in this attack; or I should say, I'm more interested.
- ?
Nano did not understand what Mrs. Maslow meant and questioned her with her eyes. The Constable stopped chewing on her pen and put it on the table. She looked serious as she observed Nano.
- From what I've heard from Starsky, the Asus trio, and your own report, it doesn't sound like all the Kemonos were there to fight. I'm talking about all the Kemonos who are willing to fight the Longers.
- What do you mean?
- Starsky and her team did not intervene precisely because they too, were attacked.
- ?!!
- She told me that she had just finished wiping out the Longers on their side when she felt me coming, so she decided not to intervene, but she had felt the Longers coming from your side. She just had to deal with Longers coming from the plains.
- Wait, but…
- I know what you're thinking, Nano. I haven't talked to everyone, yet, it looks like the main attack was in the desert, but the Longers were way over-prepared.
Maslow rested her head on her fist and squinted weakly; such a serious face was not something Nano would see every day.
- The Longers attacked from all directions, and all to distract some Kemonos.
It was the thing Nano had just figured out, but Mrs. Maslow confirmed her thoughts. She slowly lowered her head and frowned. She knew that the Longers were not stupid, especially the big ones, but how...? How could they have come up with such a plan? If she understood correctly—
- Basically, the two hordes attacking the Federation were the main attack, but there would have been attacks from all sides to prevent Kemonos like Starsky from coming to our aid...?!” she blurted out, confused.
Maslow nodded.
- I haven't heard much from the prison, but Asus told me that when she called one of her Faction, he told her that they had also been attacked and that one guard was even injured. However, they don't know where they came from.
- I guess because of the sandstorm...?
Maslow didn't answer anything, but Nano didn't need to have her answer: she was sure that was the case. The storm that had raged shortly after the Constable's departure remained a total mystery: it had disappeared all of a sudden and the Longers had arrived right after. Moreover, as far as Nano knew, this storm had affected almost the entire Justice Desert; could it be possible that a Longer had done such a thing? To control the weather like that... Nano thought of something, but she didn't want to believe it. However, Mrs. Maslow, as if reading her mind, smiled and said:
- Do you think it could be the work of... a God?
Nano thought exactly that and did not hide her shock. She finally nodded slowly, mouth agape. Maslow returned to a more comfortable and serious position and sighed.
- In any case, it is certain that the young Goddess who came to warn me is not behind this strange storm. It's possible that it's only natural and therefore that chance played a role, but I wouldn't be a Deschats or even the Constable if I dared to believe such a thing and didn't go and investigate it.
Maslow put away the pen that was lying on his desk and dropped into the seat of his big chair.
- I don't know if it was a God who did such a thing, but considering how unpredictable they are, I figure it's not impossible that the Longers had help from someone very, very powerful... A God is not to be crossed off the list.
Nano had come to believe in the Gods when she got to know Mrs. Maslow, and she knew how differently they could think than humans. Besides, three hundred years ago, a terrible war between humans and Gods had raged... Some people said that it was just legends or rumors, that Gods didn't exist or didn't exist anymore, but Nano had never believed in them; and she was right.
- Anyway, Nano, there's no point in taking your head like that. I will be careful from now on,” Maslow said to her with a friendly smile.
The Kemono trusted her completely, but she was still worried. Sure, her priority was Mrs. Maslow's life and worrying about such things was not her duty, but if the Longers were helped by the Gods... then the survival of their species along with that of the humans would be greatly endangered. Sure, they had Mrs. Maslow on their side and she could exterminate them all with a snap of her finger, but since she didn't want to take part in the fighting…
- …
Nano decided to think about something else and her mind returned to Kin's case. Mrs. Maslow hadn't said anything about him, but she wondered what she thought about it. She hesitated to mention it at first, but took a deep breath.
- ... About Kin…
Maslow looked at Nano and waited for the end of her sentence, even though in reality, she already knew what she was going to ask.
- ... Will he be... punished?
Nano found it hard to ask such a question, but it was mostly about who she was: a Kemono who was always serious and cold, who didn't have time to make friends with others. Worrying so much about Kin wasn't like her, but Nano had accepted, even if only a little, that she saw him as her best friend. If he had to leave the Protection Team because of his mistake, she would understand, but she couldn't hide it: she would be sad. Having him on the team meant being able to talk to him almost every day. Teasing him and being teased; chatting and even sometimes having fun with him. She would respect Mrs. Maslow's decision no matter what, but she hoped with all her heart that Kin wouldn't get a big punishment. Nano stared at Mrs. Maslow, waiting for her answer, but was surprised when she saw her laugh. Nano blinked and the Constable shook her head and shrugged.
- I see that my Nano is worried about the others now!" said Maslow.
- ... I—
- I don't mean that as a negative criticism, Nano.
Nano couldn't say anything.
- It's... cute. I'm glad you're able to care a little more about others, not just me.
Even if she said that, Nano would still see her own life as belonging to Mrs. Maslow. No matter how much she worried about Kin, she wouldn't change the way she saw things; at least not that quickly.
She was part of the Protection Team and even the "leader" of it, so it would be unforgivable for her to risk her life for others.
- But to answer your question... I won't do anything.
- N-Nothing...?” repeated Nano, shocked.
Maslow shook her head, shaking her long, beautiful red hair.
- Why would I punish him? Yes, it was a bit silly of him, especially since he must see my life as a priority; but I don't care what he does besides that. If he wants to try to save a Kemono because he's powerful and confident enough, then so be it. Besides, I'm sure this experience will make him understand the reality of things and he'll be less... Hmmm... Bold, next time!
Maslow smiled at the end of her sentence. Nano watched the Constable with a gape, but she wasn't really shocked. More like... surprised? Even if Mrs. Maslow had always been a very sympathetic and understanding Kemono, Nano would have thought that she would have been at least disappointed by Kin's behavior. He who had to take care of his life to protect the Constable, had risked it for a Kemono he didn't even know. It wasn't his job and it had been foolish of him, especially since he had stopped there, making himself vulnerable to the Longers. Without the Kemonos who had accompanied him, who knew what state he would have been in...?
Nevertheless, Nano did not answer anything. She had nothing to report and even if she had anything to say, she would never oppose Mrs. Maslow's opinion. If she thought Kin didn't deserve any punishment, so be it; Nano would accept it and gladly so. She bowed again with respect and couldn't help but let a small smile appear on her lips.
- ... I see. Thank you, Madam.
- Anything else you want to tell me?" asked Maslow.
- ... Oh, I almost forgot.
With the Longers' attack and Kin's condition, Nano had almost forgotten something she had discussed with someone. Even though it wasn't really important, she didn't want to save it for later and make him wait.
- Na asked me if he could talk to you face to face,” Nano told her.
Even though it was a small request and Nano didn't really care, out of respect for the human, she agreed to talk about it to Mrs. Maslow. Besides, since she was in a good mood, she didn't mind talking about it after such an important conversation. The Constable blinked and chuckled.
- The human I found outside the Federation gates?" she asked with a smile.
Nano nodded. Maslow smacked her lips and a few seconds later gave her answer:
- You can tell him to come tomorrow, at noon, here in my room. You can take him with you, it will be better~!
- ... Okay, I'll tell him. That's all.
She bowed again and left without saying anything more. Nano was sure that Na would be happy to hear that.
- Waaa, what a bore!
Asus screamed in her solitude and threw herself on the bed with a sigh. She had taken off her big shoes and was now barely dressed in her underwear, but since she had had sand and blood all over her body and clothes, she had decided to wash up after her talk with Maslow. She didn't feel like getting dressed again, especially since she wasn't allowed to leave the Federation without permission.
- At least I was able to call someone... Aaah, I hope they're okay…
Asus thought about the members of her Faction who were currently in the Justice Prison. She was the only one that was still free to enter the Federation, but that was only because of Maslow.
- And to think that we were all basically living free…
She thought about the past and closed her eyes, putting both hands behind her head. In all her life, she had never had to fight such a powerful Longer, but it had been... oddly fun. How many years had it been since Asus had been able to fight like this? She was banned from fighting for some reason she understood, but she found it so... annoying. Maslow understood her, so why not give her more freedom?
- ... Especially since I have something to do.
Asus gritted her teeth at the thought, but she didn't want to get upset. She had been looking for a particular place for years, but when would she finally find it?
And to think that tomorrow was going to be her 587th birthday.
****************************************************************
Arasol rose at a reasonable hour and the desert Justice was lit up with its beautiful rays. From the early morning, the Kemono Federation was filled with life by its inhabitants. Some were just going to work, others were walking or visiting friends.
Others went to see the wounded from the Longer attack that happened yesterday.
47. This is the number of injured.
3. This is the number of dead.
6. This is the number of seriously injured Kemonos, at death's door.
These numbers may have seemed large, but for the Kemonos it was reassuring: such a horde could have taken many more victims. Hushimao was moving around and dark circles were painted under her eyes, the lack of sleep was starting to show. Despite the Kemonos telling her to go to sleep, she refused to let anyone in the wounded die or suffer any longer. She knew it was just morning, but she would go to sleep tonight, when she had taken care of everyone. Still, there were enough doctors to make sure everyone was okay; it was just the way Hushimao was.
The Constable had made a short speech apologizing for acting so late and explaining herself without giving any excuse: leaving like that without warning had been childish of her. She had promised a big meal for the whole Federation in one week and she will take care of it herself to make up for it. Even though no Kemono had a grudge against her, Maslow was just a Constable who cared deeply for them: knowing that there were deaths in this attack made her very sad and her feelings were real. She knew all the Kemonos in her Federation and knowing that members of her race — or rather, FRIENDS — had died could not help but make her sad. So a celebration was well deserved, especially for the masterful fight they had all put up. Even the Kemonos who had only protected the others or killed two or three Longers deserved to be congratulated for their courage and strength; such a horde could not have been easy to handle. It had lifted everyone's spirits, and even though no damage had been done to the walls of the Federation, the Kemonos had begun to think of ways to better protect themselves against future attacks. After all, their Federation was fairly new, when you think about it.
In the Sheerah Faction, a human stood up. The only one within the Federation walls: Na. A strange and short name, but one that was fun to pronounce. It sounded like a negation, and yet it wasn't really; or who knows what "Na" really meant, deep down. After all, this human didn't know who he really was: he couldn't remember his past. However, he was determined to learn the truth about his own existence, but for that he needed the help of others.
But for now, no one knew anything about him.
He was a human who had been found wearing somewhat strange clothes, but that was all; beyond that, nothing about him gave any clue to his identity. Was he from Alarez or from another Country? Maybe even from another continent, who could tell?
Today, he would be able to talk to the Constable. Maybe he would get a lead on him... maybe he would even finally know who he was. Na had been so excited about this that he had had trouble sleeping, but that wasn't the only reason:
- You move around too much when you sleep…” he sighed.
A girl with messy hair was at his side: Bibi.
A friend he had thought dead during the fight against Bibha, but who could come back to life by losing her life; this at the cost of 20 years of knowledge. She didn't have her hair tied back and her eyes were still showing some fatigue, but her sweet face was pleasant to look at. Besides, Na was not going to complain: seeing Bibi again was very good for him. She smiled at him.
- I'm sorry...!” she said.
Na still had a little trouble thinking that she was a Goddess, but he didn't want to question her: for the moment, he was just happy to have her by his side again. He was looking forward to introducing her to Sheerah: he had already done it with the other members of the Faction, even Hushimao! He was only missing Sheerah and the last member that no one was talking about... He wondered who she really was, since he didn't even know her first name.

- Do you want me to let you talk to Maslow alone or do you want me to go with you?” she asked.
She was in loose pajamas, but one that made her look very cute; Na loved seeing her in that outfit. They had slept together because Bibi had requested it, but they had not been glued together; at least not until Bibi started moving around until she almost climbed on top of him.
- ... I prefer to be alone, please,” asked Na.
- Of course!
She accepted without hesitation and smiled. Na looked at her and returned her smile: even if she was not entirely the same as when he had met her, she was still as... nice. He appreciated that.
And time passed slowly until Nano came knocking at the door of the Sheerah Faction. Na had dressed properly and refused to shave his goatee in case it would help to find his real identity; a stupid idea, but he didn't want to change his appearance. Bibi wished him luck in learning more about himself and Na thanked her before following Nano. The Kemono looked at him and squinted.
- A human who doesn't know who he is, but a Goddess follows him... You're special, you know?” she let go.
Na scratched his cheek, unable to say anything to her. It was just a coincidence that he and Bibi knew each other, so to say he was special was an exaggeration; at least, that was his opinion. Nano noticed that he didn't say anything and sighed.
- Na.
- Y-Yes?" he said, blinking.
- Are you sure... you want to know who you really are?
- ??
Na didn't understand Nano's question. The Kemono looked ahead, ignoring the stares of the human next to her. The man was watching Nano, trying to find the logic behind her words... but he didn't understand.
- What do you mean...?" he asked.
- ... If you remember who you are, if your memories come back, then will you be the Na we know now?
- …
- Aaah, never mind. I hope Mrs. Maslow can help you.
She scratched the back of her fox ear and continued the rest of the way in silence, while Na thought about her words. Despite what she was saying, Na was sure he wanted his memory back.
- Here it is.
Nano stopped in front of a beautiful door and knocked several times before shouting that it was her and Na. An imposing female voice rang out telling the human that he could come in. Na swallowed and Nano patted him on the shoulder.
- Mrs. Maslow has a very imposing Aura and often dominates conversations, but she is kind. Speak from your heart, I promise, she won't bite you," she tried to reassure him.
Na clenched his fists and took a deep breath. Nothing said that Maslow, the Constable of the Federation, the one who had taken him in front of the doors of this huge place, would have any idea of who he really was.
But she was currently his only lead.
Sure, Bibi was a Goddess and could therefore know a lot about Na, but she had promised him that she had no idea who he really was: she was following him because she just didn't want to go home. Even though he didn't fully understand Bibi's way of thinking, he didn't want to bother her with questions and so he decided to just believe her. Na nodded and lowered the doorknob before entering the huge room that was the Constable's main room. Beautifully painted walls, a ceiling adorned with a luxurious chandelier and a gigantic carpet decorated with designs he didn't understand. In front of him, a Kemono with long flaming red hair, hypnotizing two-colored eyes and a friendly smile that was not reassuring; but also an imposing Aura. It was complex to explain what Na was feeling, but it was as if the room was running out of air and the pressure on his shoulders had suddenly increased. Maslow was not doing anything special and yet she gave such an impression... He could never forget how he had felt yesterday when she had arrived on the battlefield. Yet miles away from him and he still felt her Aura…
- Sit down, Na~!” she said, still smiling.
Nano closed the door behind Na and let them talk without even putting her ear to the door: this discussion was private and she would never dare to spy like that. She decided to go and check Kin's condition while the human was talking with Mrs. Maslow.
- O-Okay,” Na answered.
A chair was prepared in advance. It too was chic, though more basic than the one where the Constable was sitting. He sat down slowly and swallowed, pursing his lips. Maslow observed him for a few seconds before taking a more serious pose.
- How are you, my little Na?” she asked.
Despite her more upright pose, she was still smiling, as if she was amused; or rather, happy.
- I-I'm fine... and you?" he replied.
- I had to talk to so many Kemonos yesterday and today I'll have to go to the prison to see how it's going there... Aaah, what a bore…
She touched her hair as she spoke and sighed at the end of her sentence.
- But otherwise, I'm fine. You saw the Longers' attack with your own eyes, didn't you?
Na nodded.
- It was... impressive, but scary.
Maslow chuckled at her rather childish reaction.
- It's true that so many Longers and four level 9s...! Ahah, I wonder who planned such an attack!
Na was surprised that she said "someone planned" the attack, since he thought the Longers were hated by everyone. Was he wrong? Nevertheless, he hadn't come to talk to the Constable about that, so he preferred not to get into that.
- Anyway, why did you want a private conversation with the great Maslow~?” she asked.
- ... I-It's... I wanted…
He found it hard to speak calmly in her presence, but he had to if he wanted to learn more about himself; she was currently his only chance to get a lead on his identity, or even get all the answers...! He took a deep breath and calmed himself.
- I would like to know who I really am…
With a rather embarrassed tone, he asked his question without being able to look the Kemono in the eyes. Maslow continued to play with his eyes and tilted his head to the right.
- Oooh, it's true that you have amnesia, isn't it?
- Amnesia?
- You don't remember anything about your past or anything, is that right?
Na nodded. The Kemono sat back in her chair and stared at Na with a small smile.
- And so you think that I, Constable of the Kemono Federation, would have any idea who you really are~?" she said.
Na nodded again, his head bowed. A few seconds passed without any sound, but Maslow finally chuckled. Na blinked and finally dared to look at the flame-haired Kemono. She scratched her hair and winked.
- I'm sorry, little Na, but I have no idea who you could be!
Her answer stopped Na's heart for a second. He looked at her, standing still, eyes wide open, mouth agape.
She…
So she didn't know anything either.
He finally lowered his head and clenched his teeth, a sad expression crossing his face. Even though he had thought about it before, about the possibility that Maslow would have no idea who he was exactly, he was still saddened. It hadn't been that long since he'd "woken up", so giving up so soon would be silly of him, but how could he not feel bad...? Maslow raised her head a little to look at him and tapped on her desk.
- Hey, Na, let me finish~!
Na blinked and looked at Maslow: she was smiling.
- You're a totally normal human and I haven't done any research on you, so it's impossible to tell you who you really are; however, that doesn't mean I don't have anything that could help you~!
- ... ?
Na felt his heart beat a little faster and he closed his mouth. The excitement and anticipation was such that he managed to keep his gaze fixed on Maslow's, even though his body felt rather... strange. The Constable twirled a lock of hair around her index finger, her eyes watching the human's.
- First of all, you could go to Alarez and try to talk to humans, not Kemonos, especially since there are a lot of places to get information there. I don't always go there, but I know that they have a copy of all the identities of all the humans that have been there. If you've been to Alarez before, then you should have a lead on your identity.
Na regained the light in his eyes as he listened to Maslow. He knew Alarez quickly: the capital of Spital, the continent they were on. It was further north and not too far from the Federation, although it would take a few hours to get there. Sheerah had discussed it with him, but she had never been there herself. Maslow continued.
- We could also put up ads in the cities saying that you're missing and we're looking for you, hoping that someone will recognize you and call us. It's a solution that can be both fruitless and very effective.
Maslow crossed her legs and stopped playing with her own hair.
- Or you can talk to Nowish~!
- No... wish... ?
Na blinked, never having heard that name before. Maslow nodded with a big smile and crossed his arms.
- An acquaintance of mine who has a Power… that is interesting~!
- ... What Power?" Na asked, curious.
- Basically, Nowish can make anyone he touches with his right paw experience dreams.
- Dreams?
- That's right. It's like you're awake in a dream and it's about you. He's done this to me before and the dreams he brings to life are always interesting~! Even if you don't remember anything, it's very unlikely that the back of your brain will! Anyway, if you live one of your dreams buried inside you…
- ... Maybe I'll see where I came from?
- I was going to say that maybe it will unlock your memories, but I guess that works too, ahah!
Maslow laughed, and Na's lips showed a big smile. Even if the other two options seemed good too, this famous Nowish could be very useful for him...! He clenched his fists and looked at Maslow.
- Where can I find him?!” he asked, excited.
- A quick and sharp answer, I like it~! Hmmm, he must be in Inavie right now, but exactly where, I must confess, I'm not sure…
She touched her own lips with her left index finger.
- I can contact him after I finish what I have to do and ask if he would agree to let you see him? Inavie is a beautiful country, I should go back there one day~!
Na had never heard of Inavie, but at the moment, he didn't care at all: he wanted to meet this person. He got up from his chair, his heart beating wildly in his chest.
- I-I want to!
Maslow looked at him with a big smile and started to laugh. She nodded and flipped her hair with both hands. Her fennec tail behind her back began to wag gently and Maslow stood up in turn.
- I'll send Nano to you when you can go. I can't promise you that Nowish will answer me directly and I'd really like to finish what I have to do, but I promise I'll make sure you get to meet him," Maslow told him.
- Thank you! Thank you very much, m-ma'am!
- Are you going to call me the same as Nano now, ahah?!
She patted him on the shoulder and gave him a friendly smile.
- Good luck in your quest, little human~!
- T-Thank you!
- I don't mean to make you leave like that, but if that's all you wanted to ask me, I'd like to talk to someone else before I go to visit the prison…
- N-No, that was it…
- Good!
She patted both her hands and walked him to the door, her fennec tail wagging from left to right behind her back. She opened the door and greeted Na, wishing him luck again. Na started to run, a big smile on his face: he had to go and warn the members of the Sheerah Faction!!! And Bibi !!!!! Maslow closed the door and returned to her office, whistling. She sat down in her chair and sighed with relief.
- Hmmm, I wonder who this Na really is....
She swung her head from side to side and smiled broadly.
- Well, anyway, it won't matter anymore, if this Goddess stays by her side…
Maslow hadn't talked about Bibi with Na, but she knew very well the purpose she had. It could be worrying, but Maslow had nothing to do with their stories: she had made sure that Bibi was on their side and when she had confirmed it, she had decided that she would not deal with it.
- Young Goddess, I wonder what you will do, the day when…
She opened her eyes again, observing the ceiling painted with frescoes of all colors.
- Na will really wake up.
****************************************************************
Crack. Crack. Crack.
The sound of bones breaking under her feet, the sound of crows flying in the blue sky.
- ...~
She walked slowly towards a destination that only she knew, but she stopped when she felt a gaze on her. The woman sighed and her ankle-length hair flew back and forth in her violent movement. She clutched the weapon in her right hand and smiled as she looked behind her.
Remnants of humans, Kemonos, Longers and other races were visible all the way to the horizon.
She was not the one who had committed this carnage: this place was called "Runn's Graveyard"... and it was here that the remains of the war that had taken place 300 years before, a terrible war between Gods and humans, were.
- Hmmm, who's following meeeeee~?" the woman said, taking a step forward.
There were no trees or places to hide, so not seeing anyone was strange, but a figure formed in front of her and a few moments later, a person appeared. Another woman with short hair and very light eyes; almost white. She touched her pelvis with her right hand and watched the one in front of her smiling.
- Heeeyy, isn't that my little Moloch?! Aaaaw, why are you heeeeer~?” said the woman with long hair.
She clutched her weapon and even though she was smiling and talking like they were friends, she was actually upset. Moloch stuck out her tongue and pointed her index finger at the woman as if it were a gun.
- I have a job I never got to finish, but now that I finally find you…” Moloch let go.
The one who had put Izaum in an eternal coma: Moloch, a terrifying "human". The woman before her, the one she had to kill, was—
- I'll never let myself be killed — and I'll never let the world forget me, you lil’ bitch~!
She waved her weapon in her hands and prepared to fight, bones cracking under her feet.
She was a powerful human, she who was called—
Ra.
- Not until I find my brother, Na!!!
