Chapter 3-Wallbase part 1

The Frontier. It is a large piece of land occupying a large part of the southern half of the Aetica Continent. Not only is it inhospitable, but it is also filled with all kinds of giant monsters. Some of these monsters are harmless, some of them are annoying, but the vast majority will attack and kill humans on sight.

On both sides of the Frontier are large mountain ranges, all of them impossible to cross. Surrounding the continent are two great oceans, one of them calm, one of them turbulent. According to Amber, there are human kingdoms that exist on the other side of the Frontier. However, contact with them is infrequent as travel between the north and south is only possible by sea.

“Why not just fly over the frontier?” I asked Amber.

“Your world must be quite advanced if humans can just travel across large distances by flying machines.”

I thought to myself: ‘You people have giant robots.’ How hard is it to build an airplane? This must be my bias acting up again. I must constantly remind myself that this world acts on a different set of common sense.

“So, this place we are travelling to. Wallbase? This your home?”

“You got it in one.” Amber replied. “Wallbase is the last line of defense against the monsters that roam these lands. Its where all mercenaries gather and operate from, so we might as well live there.”

“Let me guess. It’s a giant wall with guns and cannons pointed towards the frontier.”

“For someone who claims not to be from here, you sure have a good understanding of this place.”

Amber sounded a bit impressed by my deductions. But it really is not hard to imagine what such a place looks like based on the name. I feel more thought could have been put into names in this world. You get fantastical names like Aetica…and then you get Wallbase.

“And this robot. You have a name for it too?” The anime fan in me must know the answer to this question.

“Is it really that important to you that you know what I call my Wildcat?”

“Wildcat huh.” Sounds like the name of a model not unlike Tomcat, Eagle or Hornet. “I mean is there a special name for this type of robot. Something like Landwalkers or Mobile Suit?”

“Oh, is that what you mean.” Amber seemed a bit perplexed by my inquiries. “Officially, these things are called Frontier Sentinels. But everyone just refers to them as Hornbreakers.”

“I think Frontier Sentinel sounds cooler.”

“Who cares?” Amber scoffed. “You get hung over the most stupid of things.”

Tsk Tsk Tsk. A name makes of breaks a giant robot. If it doesn’t sound cool enough, it won’t be selling any toys. Good naming sense comes a long way.

As we travelled back towards Wallbase, we also talked about a lot of other things about this world. The only sentient species are humans, and they all speak a common tongue. A very convenient setting I find myself in. It also occurred to me midway through our conversations that we both understood each other.

At first, I assumed Amber was speaking in English. But according to Amber, I was speaking in Universal. Upon further inquiry, I learned that magic does not exist. So, this begs the question, how is it that we understand each other?

There must be some supernatural phenomenon going on for such a miracle to occur. Either the isekai goddess is shy or I actually lost my memories regarding her.

We must have been pretty far out from Wallbase as I noticed the sun setting in the distance. Either the Frontier is massive or Amber just drives slow.

“Can your Wildcat go any faster?”

“You want us both to get stranded here?” She replied with a bit of annoyance in her voice. “I’ve already used most of the tank this morning, and now I got extra unaccounted for cargo.”

“Does the concept of a gas station not exist? Seems like it will make quite a bit of profit.”

“Nobody builds anything out in the frontier. Not anymore at least. A long time ago, pioneers tried to build watch towers and small lodgings out here.”

“What happened?”

“What else? Monsters.”

Right. Of course. Monsters are carnivorous and humans taste good. Makes sense.

Shortly after I was done complaining, I noticed a giant wall slowly poking above the ground. And the wall is massive. Its length must be around three stadiums and its height at least ten stories. The only reason I must not have seen this large structure before must be the fac that we are also going up a slope. The mountain ranges on both sides of me also seem to be approaching closer.

A giant fortified wall, standing above a slope and surrounded by two impassable mountains. Wallbase is a perfect defensive structure that puts Helms Deep to shame.

As we drew closer to home, I can also see other Wildcats going to and from. Some of them were red, some blue. I can also see other mecha that I do not recognize.

“Hey Amber. There are a lot of red Wildcats around.”

“Of course.” Amber replied. “Wildcats are the most affordable and fuel efficient Hornbreaker on the market. Mine here I got from my pa and it still works fine for a twenty year old machine.”

…so Wildcats are isekai Honda Civics. I can feel my heart sink a little. There isn’t even a significance behind the paintjob. Amber’s dad probably just bought it thinking of family finances.

This is just pure sacrilege to an Asian male such as myself. Red machines are reserved for ace pilots. Red machines are also supposed to travel three times as fast as other machines. My annoyance grew greater as I noticed other red Wildcats travelling faster than us.

“There are three entrances built into the wall.” Amber informed me as we closed onto the target. “I live near the one on the right.”

“Just to clear up some misunderstandings I may have, but do you live INSIDE the wall?”

“Umm…no? We live BEHIND the wall. The wall is just a wall…with guns.”

“Oh…are there Titans in the wall?”

“What’s a Titan?”

“You don’t need to know. Just as long as there aren’t any.”

Now that we are about to pass through the gate, I am once again intimidated by the size of Wallbase’s giant…wall. The monster that also killed me earlier was about two stories high. The wall looks to be about ten. I got goosebumps as I realized that this wall is meant to keep out creatures as tall as itself.

I have seen and heard of many fantastic things in these few hours that I have been isekaied. Surely the actual city of Wallbase must be some amazing Steampunk FFVII Midgar looking place. I am sure the sight beyond these gates will wow me and cement the fact that I am indeed in another world.

My heart is pumping in excitement and my breath bated. The moment of truth.

Oh come on! This is just Shibuya.
