“You have got to be shitting me.”
I literally just finished taking a dump. All I did was open the stall door. And when I walked out, expecting the sink, I find myself in this strange new world.
I live in Toronto. It is a city that can best be described as an urban jungle with condominiums acting as trees. It can get cold in the winter and sometimes, awfully hot in the summer. But not this hot. This is a different type of heat.
Right now, I am sweating bullets. All around me is what I can only describe as a desert. Last summer, I went with my family down to Vegas. While the weather was cool at night, during the day the heat was insufferable. For a kid used to blizzards and hail, I feel like a polar bear experiencing global warming. All I know is that this place is definitely not Kansas and I am not in Toronto anymore.
And did I mention the giant two story lizard staring straight at me? At least I think it’s a lizard. This thing has scales, but also sharp teeth and horns. Oh, its also probably feeling hungry.
“Grrrrrr….” The monster growled menacingly at me. The foulness of its breath nearly made me puke.
“Ahh…Good boy.”
My voice was shaking and so were my knees. And then I remembered how when dealing with wild animals, you either play dead or avoid eye contact. Or do I stare it down to exert dominance? Either way, I can’t remember.
“What you staring at, ugly?” I shouted at it with as much teenage bravado I can conjure up. “I ain’t afraid of you…you Monster Hunter reject!”
I think I may have riled up the big boy instead, as it let out a huge roar.
“REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!”
By this time, something was leaking down my pants. It’s definitely not sweat.
I, Caleb Wong, have only been alive for sixteen years. It hasn’t been a long life, nor an eventful one until now. Thoughts of regret filled my head as my life flashed before my eyes.

I was born to your typical middle class Chinese immigrants with conservative values. All I have ever done is study, play the violin, and compete in swimming. I don’t have any friends and I surely don’t have any hobbies. If I knew I was going to die this young, I should have rebelled more.
Sorry, mom, dad, looks like I won’t be able to become that doctor/engineer/lawyer that you want me to be.
I closed my eyes waiting for the inevitable.
…
…
“Hey you!” I heard a loud voice being projected through a loudspeaker. It was the voice of a young girl. “Incoming fire!”
“Huh?” I opened my eyes and looked behind me, the direction where the voice came from.
Hovering at crazy speed is a large figure of a human. No...it’s not a human. Upon closer inspection, I could see the light being reflected off its red coat of paint.
I don’t know if its speed is three time as fast as its variants, but there is a giant robot rushing towards me. If my mind was still rational, I’d be scoffing at the sight of seeing what is essentially a Knightmare Frame from Code Geass existing in the same setting as a giant monster. Oh wait, Muv Luv is a thing too.
Anyways, this is no time for my mind to be going on tangents. I am about to be in the middle of a firefight!
Seeing that the monster in front of me has become distracted, I made a run for it towards the huge rock off to the side.
“Eat on these, Fangbeast!” The KMF knockout let loose a barrage of gunfire from its rifle.
The sound of gunfire soon reached my ears and then I see the bullets hit the monster head on. The bullets seem to be super effective as the monster begins recoiling in pain. But it was far from dead.
The monster, not threatened by something equal if not more dangerous than itself, begins to retreat. The mecha however is not having it.
“Oh no you don’t!” The mecha is now close enough that it begins circling the monster. “I’m getting paid today!”
The mecha unleashed round after round of bullets from its rifle, not targeting the monster’s side. Perhaps, the side is the weak spot?
Soon enough, the monster let out a death cry as it slumped down into the ground.
The battle is over.
I came out of my hiding spot and watched as the mech approached me. The hatch on its front opened with a hiss. The pilot came out to greet me.
Having watched a lot of mecha anime, I expected the pilot to be a young girl in a skin tight plug suit.
Instead, what I see before me is a young girl with red hair wearing a green crop top and blue overalls. The girl lifted up her goggles and I can see her beautiful green eyes.
“You need a ride?”
