Night simply couldn't understand what Edward was doing; neither did she knew from which tribe the man in front of her was from. Every word and every move Light made only confused her but also evoked her curiosity.
"Light, I won't leave, for now. I want to see what you are doing?"
‘I have been busy since I came here, trying to win your favor, and yet you are thinking about eventually leaving me behind? I understand your apprehension, which is your basic survival instinct, but I guess I should take this as an improvement over you leaving me immediately. I’ll just need to dazzle you so much that you won’t leave me….hehehehe’
His mind was busy making up ideas to further his goals and daydream.
After picking up a pile of dry firewood from around, Edward double-check everything that he needed for his next step, making sure he was really ready. Edward knew this would take a bit longer as he wasn’t trained in this precisely, so he needed to occupy Night and avoid her getting bored and leaving.
“Night, it’ll take me a moment. Why don’t you skin the rabbit meanwhile?”
He laid the hay on the wooden stick, his left hand on the "wood drill," and his right hand began to pull the bow back and forth.
‘The next move will affect the progress of human civilization in this era, or to bring them directly into the civilized era. It is indispensable.... this will become something significant.’
For Night, fire was something she had no knowledge about. All they knew was that fire was something intense and all-consuming. It consumed and destroyed everything it touched.
It was not surprising that they were not aware about the uses of fire. Even during the 21st century where humanity has already entered the space age, there were tribes in the jungles of Amazon and Papua New Guinea that still lived in the age of sticks and stones.
"Light, I don't want to skin the rabbit, I want to see what you are doing!"
Night put the rabbit aside and sat opposite of him.
‘What a curious girl. No wonder it was this kind of curiosity that advanced the prehistoric humans.’
Glancing at the legs she did not close together, Edward quickly turned his head to the side.
‘This... has already gone for too long, this... the way she cares not for her posture or clothes, can’t the other savage men not see this? No, I have to dress you up later, but before that, I must let you stay away from me lest you start to fear what I am about to do.’
Edward hadn’t realized it, but he was starting to apply modern logic to someone from the prehistoric time. Posture or clothes? Why would ancient people even care for that?
“Well, if you really insist on seeing this, I’ll advise you to be careful. Don’t be afraid, and no one is angry or anything okay? It’s just me doing something.”
Edward moved and sat down at one side before getting to work.
Edward's right hand quickly pulled the bow and drilled back and forth, and his left hand pressed the auger to increase the friction. This method used to be done in the wild camping trips back at Earth. It was just a game of self-sufficiency for himself, but at this moment, this was something that would change history for the people of this era.
As soon as the smoke rose, Edward looked at Night nervously, for fear of scaring her away.
The smoke grew bigger and bigger, and soon a small group of red charcoal fire appeared in the pit. The beautiful eyes of the Night were rounded. Her breathing turned rapid as her naked chest moved in a rhythmic motion. Her hands were on her chest, yet she felt like she couldn’t stop her rising excitement. Even if she didn’t understand the facts, but she felt what was happening in front of her was like a miracle.
‘Damnit, the way her chest is moving…. Why are you breathing so fast? Stop brain. Go away bad thoughts. FOCUS BRAIN!’
Edward physically forced himself to tear his eyes away from her and resumed his focus. Soon enough, his efforts bore fruit. Embers started to appear on the dry grass. Gentle Edward blew on it. Next thing, there was a small ember of fire.
A mix of fear and surprise appear on Night’s face as she jumped back a little. Edward saw her wide-eyed and quickly decided to explain.
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
"Night….."
He didn't know how to explain it, so he gathered his thoughts before continuing. Fire was something simple for modern people. Even so, just like the transition of the Paleolithic Age to the New Stone Age and yet it took millions of years for humans to discover their path. From their perspective, this was nothing short of a miracle, so her reaction was justified.
"Night, spit on it," said Edward, squirming his mouth and slowly spit towards the pit.
Night was puzzled, but she just followed along.
"Good! You look at me……"
The embers were very light and fragile. After both of them spat on the pit, the embers had eventually died down.
“I can make fire or stop fire. I can make this…. Fire god angry or drive them away. You can do it too, do you understand? Look what happened after you spitted? Just follow my steps, and you’ll be fine.”
“Water kills god?” Her face showed her understanding as she reached a logical conclusion.
“Yes, water kills fire. You don’t have to fear it. You’ll do okay.”
Edward couldn't help but rub his nose against her nose and sniffed her just how she sniffed her back. His mind wandered with the thought about laying with this girl, but he realized that he was just acting like a horny teenager.
’I’m beyond being a horny teenager. What is wrong with me? Maybe… just maybe I too changed coming into this era? Did my body change, or am I making excuses?’
Edward could only wonder in silence.
"This time you must be calm...... as long as you are not afraid, don't run. I promise to let you eat something good later!”
He remembered that because of his recklessness, he had bankrupted his family, causing his wife to have insecurities about him, which allowed that fat-ass thief Billy to worm his way in.
This time, he wasn’t going to repeat his mistakes. He could already see traces of trust for him in Night’s eyes.
Edward reopened the pit with the obsidian knife and used the bow drill. The bow drill moved back and forth once again before long, smoke started to rise, and the pit turned red.
He quickly laid the dry grass.
And blew a few gentle breaths.
Before long, a fire was started!
But Night still screamed in terror even after all his words, she got up and ran!
Edward’s eyes clouded, and his heart was broken. In a hurry, he shouted:
“Night! Why did you save me today? You might as well had just let me die if you will leave me now!”
Night had already run out for more than ten meters. When she heard Edward’s voice full of sadness, she suddenly stopped.
"I.... afraid of the angry gods...." She hid behind a tree, her eyes filled with a look of horror.
“Didn’t you just told me that water kills fire? I promise not to let the fire ever touch you. Trust me, Night! Please trust me!” He explained helplessly.
Just to show her that the fire was under control, he threw the surrounding dirt on the fire. That immediately put the fire out.
With slow steps, Night returned to his side, her face held and unclear expression.
"Light, the patriarch said to us, the legend is that the gods were angry, and the whole forest was lit. Nothing could run out, and everything was burnt......"
He nodded,
"Night, let's change to an empty place, or we can go back to the waterfall."
Edward remembered hearing a waterfall when he had just woken up.
Soon they packed their things, including the rabbit, which Night held while Edward picked some dry grass and his Bow drill. The two-headed towards the waterfall area.
Once there, Edward ignited the fire again. This time it was reignited in a bright place, unlike the gloomy woods. The fire felt particularly dazzling to Night right now.
Night was still a little way, but it was much better than the last two times. Although she kept her distance from the fire at least, she was not running away at the mere sight of fire.
Edward began to use his modern skills.
Using the obsidian knife, he cut off a few pieces of meat from the rabbit. He skewered those rabbit meat using nearby branches and held them over the fire to roast them.
He felt like it was just like the old days when he used to roast meat with his friends in the wilderness.
He waved towards Night and motioned her to come closer. He could see her twitching nose, smelling the roasted meat.
“Night, you like the smell, right? Hehehehe”
Edward started to laugh at her expression.
For those who ate raw foods such as raw meat and insects, roasted food was the difference between heaven and earth for them. No one could ever resist a barbecue.
Night looked at it all in amazement, slowly approaching towards him again.
"Don't be afraid; if you want, I will let the fire go out at any time!" He added a few dry branches to the fire and turned the skewer of meats in his hand, patiently persuading her.
There were enough dry branches to keep the fire going for quite some time. Soon the meat was roasted properly.
Edward took a small bite of the meat and soon broke out with a grin.
“It really tastes good. Nothing beats barbecue!”
Before he realized it, Night was standing next to him, her eyes sparkling with interest. He offered one of the roasted meat to Night, who gingerly bit on to it. It was enough to break the last of her defenses. She rapidly finished up on her piece of meat.
Without fearing the fire, she stood close to it as she stared at the other pieces of roasting meat.
“Sit down and relax. I’ll ready it and give some more to you.”
At that moment, Edward was hungry but still endured the saliva as he gulped. He still had to wait a few moments for his turn.
He started at his hands and feet before his eyes wandered towards Night, who hungrily eat the skewer of meat.
‘This is definitely the first-ever cooked meat she has even eaten in her life. The taste will make it addicted. She will never be able to eat anything else. As long as someone eats the first bite, I can addict them to this “drug”.’
Night took the skewers and swallowed a few mouthfuls of water. Her bright eyes looked at Edward and then towards the burning fire. From surprise, her face slowly turned into a smile.
Edward smiled back at her and nodded to her, patiently encouraging her.
Night resumed eating big mouthful pieces of meat with impossibly fast speed. Edward could barely get the time to eat something himself.
‘Oh, as long as you eat this, it’ll be easy for me to bind you to myself hehehehe.”
Edward smiled smugly and felt much relieved.
