Author's note: The magic types are stereotypical, so I won't explain them.

Once we had all finished eating the old man ran up stairs to get a clear stone ball, while Lavender and I washed the dishes we ate on. I did not enjoy washing them. Lavender tried to show me how to wash the dishes but I wasn't very good at it. I ended up with my head getting drenched with water and neither of us know how it happened. The old man showed up immediately afterwards and started to laugh at me... I feel like he's the reason I got drenched, but I'm not sure how. We all sit down at the table to begin the lesson.
"To start, Lavender how about you explain what you know about magic? Then afterwards Chaise will give his explanation."
"Yes sir. Magic is the use of mana to create a change in the world. It is generally temporary because to maintain a spell a constant supply of mana needed. There are multiple types of magic. Attributed, summoning, taming, enchanting, and elemental are the main types. Fire, water, wind, earth, light, shadow, lightning, ice, dark, neutral, and nature are the different attributes for attributed. Umm, oh! And to activate magic we chant to control mana to cast spells. Umm...that's all I know."
"Don't worry that was pretty good. Chaise it's your turn to say what you know about it."
"Okay. It's the use of mana. To use it first you have to practice moving your mana around your body. The next step is to be able to bring it outside your body while still controlling it and not letting it dissipate. Once you can do that, then you can add elements into the mana. To make it do something you have to understand what it is you're trying to do, at least well enough to explain it to someone else. "
The old man is staring at me fascinated and excited. Lavender is looking back and forth between the two of us confused."
"Umm, Chaise I don't think that is how it works. You didn't even include chanting in your explanation..."
"I don't understand why you would need to chant. I've never done it."
"Don't pretend. It's rare that even super powerful mages can perform chantless. You're even younger than I am how could you do what great mages can't."
She started scolding me. It's not my fault bipedals aren't good at controlling their second energy!
"My mother taught me how to use magic, so I'm doing the way she taught me."
"Can she do it then? She might not actually understand how to use magic. Where is your proof? I don't believe it!"
My fur and hair is bristling. My ears are flattened and my tail is lashing from side to side. I begin to hiss under my breath. She is insulting my mother!
"Woah! Calm down Chaise, calm down. She did mean to be insulting! She isn't trying insulting your mother. She's from the orphanage and has to help take care of the younger children, so she is use to scolding others for lying. She is use to little kids exaggerating things to the point of it being a lie. From most people's perspective it is an unbelievable thing. It's okay, just calm down, please. Just relax~~"

Hmm, I'm not okay with it, but in respect to the old man I try to relax. I stop hissing and my fur and lies back down. My eyes are narrowed and cold, and my ears are half flattened. I'm not okay with it.
"That's better, I guess. Thank you Chaise. Lavender, his upbringing was a bit special so be careful with your words okay? He doesn't need to be scolded like the little kids, alright? Plus I've actually seen him using magic chantless. I didn't know his method though. It actually makes sense if you think about it. Also, you might want to-."
He tilts his head at me quickly. She was standing in shock from when he confirmed what I said. She becomes flustered and turns toward me.
"S-sorry. I didn't mean to insult you or your mother. I didn't think you were telling the truth. What you said was really unbelievable though. Anyone would have reacted the same I think."
I flick my ears and look away from her. It's her problem that she didn't believe me. I look at the old man and make an expression asking him to continue the lesson. He does, and continues as if the previous outburst didn't happen.
" *sigh* Fine. So you were almost right about the types and attributes, Lavender, but you left out a few things. There are also mind and slave types of magic, they are both fairly similar to each other and taming magic. The attributes you missed were time and space, but they're both very rare compared to any other type. The reason I asked you both to explain what magic is is because their are many different ways people define magic, and often times they won't agree with other definitions of it. I think of it as a phenomenon that brings about changes in the world for the use of mana. What mana is is unsure. It's a much more debated point than the definition of magic. Chaise, I'd like to hear your insight on it later okay?"
"Okay."
"So, what specifically do you two want to know about magic?"
"Umm, how do you train to use it?"
"First you have to feel your mana. While you're conscious of it you then chant the spell you want to use. The spell will then activate. Draining your mana pool by use will make it bigger. It will help you concentrate on your mana and control your magic if you use a wand while casting. Do you have any questions Chaise?"
"Yes I do. I understand attributed magic, but what exactly are the other types? I didn't know that you could do things other than attributes."
"That makes sense. Only six races use them. I don't think magic beasts even can use them. Except for mind magic, but they generally use it like an attribute. I'll start with elemental magic. It can only be used through the help of elementals, which is part of the reason it's in debate if they are part of the fey race or not...
