“Go! Go! Go!” Chandra yelled out and looked at the open space of the intersection. The damned Kingsworn were bearing down on them as they raced across the city in an intricate game of cat and mouse.
“What do you see? Quickly. We are running out of time!” Lucia said in a huff as we ran.
“More up ahead. Closing in from all three sides, we are being herded towards the east gate runs.” Chandra replied just as breathlessly.
“Damnit! That whole area is a death trap of dead ends and packed roads.” Lucia breathed out.
“We have to get to the gate and try to get out of the city. The rest will have to finish preparations on their own, we were spotted I’m sure of it. They know our faces now and will begin to hunt for us with those damned dogs.” Chandra replied, pausing to look around the corner of a building.
“Clear! Go!” Chandra said just as an arrow ripped through her chest. “Help..” She gurgled out in vain and died a moment later.
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
“Shit!” Lucia yelled and took off the opposite way.
The next intersection was crowded to watch the hangings of the day. The crowd was so thick Lucia could barely make her way through it. She turned and glanced at the uniform of the Kingsworn pursuing her. How had they known which safehouse they would be at? Was there a spy in the rebellion or just bad luck? Without Chandra and her Far-Sight skill she was running blind.
She had to make it out of the city and send a message back that they were compromised. Bisca had received the message that Sylar was on his way to Etes. That would be the only chance they would get to depose the King and free the rest of her friends and family. They had to finish preparing for his arrival and the fight that would follow.
The King was restless now, his madness on full display. The Kingsworn had grown in number so much that it was almost an even fight on paper between them and the first army. Rumor had it the King could force citizens into his service now and hold them against their will. Chandra made it through the intersection and readied for another dash towards the gate, only a few hundred feet away. The last thing she saw was the arrow as it fly through her left eye.
