Chapter 1

In the city that embodies crime and corruption, Gotham.

As the sun was just starting to fall from high noon, a family was walking along the sidewalk. The parents watched with smiles on their faces as their 8 year old son was looking from window to window trying to find something to spend his birthday money on. Having saved up $50 dollars from his last report card and now birthday he was going to be picky on what he spends it on.

The boy stopped at the street corner. Something odd had caught his eye. A man that looked like he was from eighteenth century London with his mustache, trenchcoat, and top hat was selling some trinkets on a table. He clearly had money based on his clothes yet the things on the table would suggest otherwise. Every kind of old household junk could be found from rusted frying pans to a case of cheap steel spoons. Except for one.

On the left edge of the table, partially covered by what looked like a knitted table cloth, was a pendant. Now the boy was not the kind for jewelry as anyone knows that just brings unwanted attention to you in a place like Gotham. Still, something about it drew him in.

Seeing his interest the man smiled. "I see you have taken a fancy to this eh boy." The man chuckled a bit seeing the 8 year old blush a bit at being found staring.

Stolen story; please report.

"Um, how much is it sir?" The boy was nervous of the stranger, but still was more interested in the silver beauty.

"Normally I would have priced it at $350."

The boy looked down in sadness, but could understand. How could something so beautiful not be expensive.

"But for you my boy. Hm, how about $30 dollars." The gentleman was grinning from the shock plastered on not only the young child, but also his parents.

"Sir, I can't take something like this for so little!" The boy may not be a saint, but he did not want to take advantage of this stranger. Money in Gotham was everything and to cheat someone by such a large margin did not feel right on the boys conscience.

"Hahaha. Don't worry my boy. This old man has little left in the world. That once belonged to my own child so seeing it come into your possession would be for the best. Not like your corrupted like most of the rest of this blasted city."

The child looked confused. His parents on the other hand knew exactly what this stranger meant and nodded their heads as well. Seeing his parents like that the boy accepted without another though and handed over the money.

"Hahaha. Take care of that boy. In the future it'll be of great use to you. Now, why don't you tell me the name of the one to carry this legacy?"

"Evan Corvex, sir!" The boy, Evan, practically yelled in excitement.

"Mm. Good man. Now then run along home now. Don't want to stay on these streets too much longer now do ya." The man gently pushed for the boy to rejoin his parents and go home. The two took evan and gave the man a greaful look for his warning on whatever was going to happen. This is Gotham, any warning is a good warning.
