CH11: Artificial leg

CH11: Artificial leg

As they continued their journey home, Kay's mind wandered back to the coaching schools he had researched earlier.

One school, in particular, stood out. It was renowned for its comprehensive training program and the success of its graduates.

Many of the top coaches in the field today were graduates of this prestigious institution.

However, the price was steep—far higher than any of the other schools he had looked into.

Kay knew that if he wanted to secure his future in football coaching, he needed the best education available. He turned to his father. "Dad, I think I've found the coaching school I want to enroll in."

Max glanced at his son, curious. "Which one?"

Kay mentioned the name of the school and outlined its credentials. Max whistled softly, impressed but also concerned about the cost. "That's quite an investment, Kay."

"I know," Kay admitted. "But it's the best option if I want to become a top coach. The program lasts a year or a half, and it could cost me almost all the compensation from the insurance."

"But if you spend all the money from the compensation on this school, what about your living expenses?" Max continued.

"I still have the rest of my salary with the team," Kay explained. "According to the clause, I lose 80% of my salary, but I still have 20% left."

Max nodded, absorbing the information. "It sounds like you've thought this through. If this is what you really want, then I support your decision."

Five days later, Kay stood in front of the prestigious coaching school with the help of his sticks, his heart pounding with a mix of excitement and anxiety.

The past few days had been a whirlwind of preparation, paperwork, and anticipation.

The school's impressive facade loomed before him, a testament to its storied history and the many successful coaches it had produced.

Kay took a deep breath and walked through the entrance, feeling a sense of purpose. He approached the registration desk, where a friendly receptionist greeted him with a face full of pity. "Welcome to our coaching program. May I have your name, please?"

"Kay Marik," he replied, handing over his registration documents.

The receptionist scanned through his papers and nodded. "Everything seems to be in order, Mr. Marik. Please proceed to the orientation hall."

Kay thanked her and made his way to the hall, feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement, along with the weight of the different looks from people there; looks of pity or contempt.

As he entered, he saw a group of aspiring coaches already seated, chatting excitedly among themselves. He found a seat and settled in, ready to absorb everything the program had to offer.

When he arrived at the orientation hall, he found the head of the school giving an introduction.

The head spoke passionately about the institution's history and its commitment to excellence. "Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the world of football coaching. You will be challenged, you will grow, and by the end of this program, you will be ready to take on the world."

Kay listened intently. He knew the road ahead would be tough, but he was ready to face the challenges. This was his chance to rebuild his life and carve out a new path in the sport he loved.

As the orientation session concluded, Kay felt a surge of excitement. His journey as a coach was just beginning, and he was ready to embrace every moment of it.

All the managers sitting there were famous former players who had already retired and finished their illustrious careers.

When they saw Kay, a young boy with sticks, not a renowned player like them, they began to underestimate him, whispering jokes and snide remarks.

Kay heard their mocking words, but instead of letting them discourage him, they fueled his determination.

He resolved to surpass them all, proving that his abilities and dedication were just as formidable as theirs, if not more so.

Kay inquired about the schedule and found out that the first class would begin in one week. He thanked the administration and left the orientation hall.

His father, Max, had come to take him back home, and they made their way out of the prestigious school together.

On their journey home, Kay couldn't stop thinking about the condescending looks and whispers from the other aspiring coaches.

He felt a fire burning inside him, a drive to prove them all wrong. "Dad, I know they were judging me back there," Kay said, his voice steady. "But I'm going to show them that I belong here just as much as they do."

Max nodded; his expression filled with pride. "I know you will, Kay. You've faced tougher challenges before, and you've always come out stronger."

On their way home, a thought crossed Kay's mind, and he turned to his father. "Dad, do you think I can get an artificial leg? I've been thinking about it a lot lately."

Max glanced at his son, remembering the discussion he had with the doctor before "I've been meaning to talk to you about that, Kay. I actually discussed it with your doctor a while ago."

Kay's curiosity was piqued. "What did the doctor say?"

Max sighed, recalling the conversation. "The doctor said it's possible, but it's a complex process. It requires a lot of physical therapy and adjustments. But if you're determined, I believe it's something we can look into more seriously."

Kay nodded, feeling a sense of determination. "I want to try, Dad. I want to do everything I can to be at my best."

Max reached over and gave his son's shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Then we'll do it, Kay. We'll explore all the options and find the best path forward. You've got a strong spirit, and I know you can handle whatever comes your way."

Max continued, "The doctor also mentioned that, with the artificial leg, you'd likely be able to walk without sticks. However, running or doing complex tasks might be out of reach. It's important to manage our expectations."

Kay absorbed this information, feeling a mix of hope and realism. "I understand, Dad. Just being able to walk without sticks would be a big step forward for me. It would make a huge difference."

Max nodded, his eyes filled with pride and encouragement. "And that's what we'll aim for, Kay. One step at a time. We'll do whatever it takes to get you there."

They directed home, and upon arriving, Kay greeted his mother with a warm smile and told her about his plans. After a comforting meal and some much-needed rest, Kay and his father decided it was time to take the next step.

They called the doctor, explaining Kay's interest in exploring the possibility of an artificial leg. The doctor listened attentively and agreed to meet with them the next day for a detailed discussion and evaluation.

"Thank you, doctor. We appreciate your time," Max said before hanging up the phone.

Kay's mother, overhearing the conversation, came into the room. "Is everything set?"

"Yes," Kay replied. "We have an appointment for tomorrow. I'm ready to see what the doctor has to say."

His mother hugged him tightly. "I'm so proud of you, Kay. You've come so far, and I know you'll continue to amaze us."

The next day, Kay and his father went to the hospital as instructed by the doctor. This hospital was different from the one where Kay had undergone surgery, a thoughtful choice to avoid triggering any painful memories.

Upon arrival, they were greeted warmly by the staff and guided to the doctor's office. The familiar face of Dr. Thompson, who had performed Kay's surgery, brought a sense of reassurance.

"Good to see you again, Kay," Dr. Thompson said with a comforting smile. "I understand you're interested in exploring the possibility of an artificial leg."

Kay nodded. "Yes, doctor. I want to know what my options are and how feasible it is for me."

Dr. Thompson gestured for them to sit down and began explaining the process in detail.

"There are several factors to consider, including your overall health, the condition of your residual limb, and your commitment to physical therapy. It's a challenging journey, but with your determination, I believe you can achieve significant improvement."

Max listened intently, his face reflecting both hope and concern. "We understand, doctor. We're ready to do whatever it takes to help Kay regain his mobility."

The doctor nodded approvingly. "That's the spirit. Let's start with a thorough evaluation today, and from there, we can discuss a tailored plan for you, Kay."

After finishing the evaluation, Kay turned to Dr. Thompson with a determined look. "Doctor, is there any chance we can complete this process in one week?"

See you in the next chapter ...
