24. Moon

24. Moon

The night sky went dark, no stars shone down bringing light from distant places across the vast emptiness. No moon reflected the sun's light in softer tones. Just darkness filled the night sky for half the world, till it didn't. Then the moon came back into bring like a flickering light that finally realized it should be on.

A new moon shone all over the world.

For those who gazed at the night sky during the last moments of darkness before the return of moonlight they alone would remember that instant as truly magical.

It was magic, both pure and ancient, magic that was six years in the making and only a handful of days in coming to completion.

There was a new moon in the night sky, a different moon than the one that was there the night before.

It was a big change to the world but it was marked by more than just pictures taken and shared by people.

It was marked by butterflies flapping their wings and the changing of tides.

It was marked with nightmares and restful dreams.

The new moon, the blue moon was marked by the one who brought it to the world with a welcome dance.

The tooth fairy danced, as was her right on the night made resplendent, she danced under her moonlight. Her body moved and swayed to a rhythm that only she could hear.

Her companions, the ones who knew her the longest the other tooth fairies could only look on in embarrassment at the gracefully tactless display, in the end they could say little to dissuade the energetic fairy's exuberance.

"Melody, my dear. While I am......grateful that you're happy, we don't understand why you summoned us here away from our work."

Melody turned to face her brethren, she wore a gleeful smile that spread from ear to ear, it was a while before any of them had the time to meet, they came from all corners of the world to see the results of her long work.

"Do you see it." She said pointing to the moon in the sky. "I started six years ago and finally I have done it. I broke the barrier. "

There was a feverish buzz amount her people as some talked excitedly, some openly weeped, while others looked at the changed moon with abject horror.

The eldest of the tooth fairies moved forward, many darting out of her way as she came before Melody. "You, broke the barrier?"

"I did." Melody said with a smile as her magic released it self in a bursting wave growing her form from the size of a child's doll to that of a glorious fully grown woman.

"I am free, we, are free." Melody cried out. While the elder watched for a moment then shook her head in irritation.

"You broke the barrier, which is good, freedom is good but we are not free. You broke the barrier but not the Geist, so we are still bound by our duty. And what of the other fairy-kin? Did you warn them?"

Melody stopped her revelry, her smile fell. "Oh shi......"

Jamal ran through the less traveled streets of London, his companions, now out for his blood.

Any normal night they had control of themselves but with a blue moon in the night sky things had changed.

It was all he could do to focus their attention on him, while keeping them away from people.

Jamal cursed the magic that changed the moon blue but more importantly changed it to a full moon.

"Boss, I am outside the house now, this jobs going to be a right mess but I'll get the teeth for you. " A man waited in his car for things in the neighborhood to settle down before making his move.

The strangeness of the night sky had him spooked but the money he was being given just for teeth was insane. "A lot of weirdos in the world, didn't think the boss was one of them but a jobs is a job."

At the edge of London near a dilapidated church, a hooded youth looked to the sky with bitter irritation, he packed a large box full of shells and his third shotgun into a large case after etching various runes into them, suddenly becoming more irritated with himself he reopened the case, looked once more at the moon that shone brightly in the night sky, cursed, then set about etching a fourth and fifth shotgun.

Ila stopped trying to teach her to walk. Not even Ali hitting the ice cover ground in the dreamscape seem to distract the Amarok from looking up at the now night sky.

"Ila... what's wrong?" Ali asked, then a flash of light change dreamscape from star filled night to something more, the moon was there but brighter than before like clouds covering the earth from the sun on a shaded day.

The moon was beautiful, never before has Ali seen it look so close, almost too close.

《You are new to magic, it might be best for you not to look up, until you become accustomed to the new ebb and flow.》

"But why? What's wrong with the moon?"

Ali looked at Ila the Amarok's hackles were up as it looked like at any moment she would attack but the only thing she looked at was the moon.

《Some fool broke the barrier.》

《 Letting magic that hasn't touched this world from my time loose. Even now I can feel myself grow stronger.》

"Isn't that good?"

《Child, I am bound to you by magic and ritual in a way that shouldn't be possible we need to find a balance between us soon.》

Then the earth trembled almost putting Ali on her back, if not for Ila's tail support. It was like the moon had found a way to shift slightly darker blue, it felt like the moon was looking at them.

《It seems that I am not the only one from ancient times, still around in this new world. The man in the moon....is awake.》
