There are many worlds that exist. However, it is uncommon that any two should cross paths. Although, it is not impossible. Through the various uses of both technology and magic, different worlds have discovered the secrets to crossing between realities. The people of Earth, however, have no magic, and have not progressed technologically enough to perform such phenomenons. Though this idea exists in stories of fantasy and science fiction, it is not yet a reality for them. But for the people of Vernia, it exists as more than just an idea. Although, now left to myths and legends, some who are practiced in the ancient arts of magic possess the keys to unlocking this power.
While magic is not unheard of on Vernia, it's not widely known either. Few mages exist in the world today, and fewer still involve themselves in the affairs of the mundane. Mages are regarded as a national asset to any country which possesses the loyalty of one. While never above the King, they tend to hold the freedom to speak as they wish, and go about their lives as they see fit. Only in times of crisis are they strongly encouraged to participate. They may regularly provide council, or small favors to the courts of the world for various reasons. But they always retain their freedom in its entirety.
Mages are powerful and wise, for it is not in natural abilities that they find their powers, but from many long years of intense study and practice. For most, it is not even known how to begin the path to becoming a mage. Some are products of mentoring, receiving knowledge and lessons passed down from mage to mage. Others possess the will to seek out this knowledge on their own.

But, there are certain types of magic that remain hidden; lost to time. There exist stories of people being summoned to Vernia from other worlds. Now, these stories appear only in legend. But these ancient forces could not be kept at bay. It was bound to happen again, when a particularly ambitious mage decided to tamper with the laws of the universe.
Lavernias Felton was not a young man at 55, though he was young by mage standards. Wise and well taught, he mentored under Arinn Vogál, the court mage to the king of Freyondel. Lavernias, however, was absent minded and perhaps a little loosely put together; so said many who knew him. A good mage to be sure, but many said he heard voices; voices that told him to do things. Lavernias seemed obsessed with ancient magic, and lost texts. So much so that he was eventually let go from his master's tutelage.
This, however, did little to deter Lavernias' hunger for knowledge and growth. He had learned much from the Great Wizard Arinn, a title well earned. Lavernias set off from the kingdom to make his own way as a mage. He found much success using old spells to lead him to ancient ruins. There he found just enough old knowledge to fuel his ambition. After years of exploring old dungeons and ruins, Lavernias amassed quite a collection of ancient texts. It was from these tomes that he learned of the existence of ancient spells used to help people traverse realities. And it was from these that he gained the knowledge which would set him firmly within the annals of history, as the mage who brought forth the calamity of worlds.
