Chapter 4

Chapter 4

When Devon finally awoke again, his mind was muddled and tired. His clothes were gone, incinerated in the blast. He felt as if he hadn't slept in days. However, it appeared to be almost nightfall now. Devon could only hope it was still the same day as when he had passed out from... he still didn't know what in the hell happened to him. Now, all he could think about was sleep.

Still, he was not so disoriented as to fall asleep right where he was. He stood up, and surveyed the surrounding area with weary eyes. Scorched. Everything was blackened around him, as far as he could see. Every tree had fallen away from him, and were roasted almost to nothing. Long shriveled sticks were all that remained of his area of the forest. None of the bushes or other plants survived. He knew he couldn't focus on this now. He needed to at least find a section of the forest that wasn't burnt so he could sleep. With little strength left, he started walking, slowly, in the dim light of evening.

Devon wasn't sure how long he'd been walking. Time felt like it was standing still. He simply walked, and walked, and walked. No thoughts raced through his mind. He did not have the wherewithall to comprehend the position he was in. He simply walked.

Eventually, he began to see trees that hadn't fallen completely over. Soon he passed by trees standing fully upright, then trees that were only singed on one side. Eventually he began to see green. Just a few patches at first, then more, and more. He started to see bushes and other plants, with the grassy green floor of the forest finally beginning to show itself. He could feel the coolness of the grass beneath his feet. Finally, feeling no energy left in his naked body, Devon collapsed onto the ground, unconscious.

He awoke, yet again. He would have felt the sensation of deja vu if not for it being dark out. It was thoroughly nightfall now, with only the stars to give off some light. And the moons as well... the, moons?! Devon looked again. No he hadn't been mistaken. Clearly there were two moons in the sky.

"No way." He quietly said to himself.

That was it. Devon had had it with all this craziness. He wanted answers, immediately. Sadly he knew it wouldn't be that easy.

It was clear to him now that he was no longer on earth. That, or he drank something truly wild the night before. Or, whenever the office party was. Devon wasn't sure how long it'd been. If he was on another planet, then his boring, mind numbing life had taken a turn for the... well honestly Devon wasn't sure if this was better or worse. Mind numbing? He had never thought of his life in that way before. But compared to the past day, the rest of his life seemed so mundane. A part of him thought the idea of discovering a new world to be, exciting.

Sure, he had just experienced extreme disorientation, followed closely by the intense fires of hell consuming his body. But now he felt relatively fine all things considered. Although, he was now standing naked in a forest, at night, on a strange planet he knew nothing about. Yeah this was probably worse.

Devon was fully content with his life as it was before. At least, that's what he thought. But he was now realizing that there was absolutely nothing interesting about it. He never really gave it much thought before, but now he felt kind of... excited. He was feeling terrified as well, true. But maybe he could finally experience something actually worth experiencing. Devon would hold off on hoping that for now. Right now he needed to find some clothes.

Just then, a soft noise sounded nearby. Devon froze as he heard a low growling coming from behind him some yards away. He slowly turned, but saw nothing. There may have been two moons out, but there were still plenty of trees enough to block much of the light. It was hard to see throughout the forest. But Devon knew this was bad. He started backing away slowly from the growling. Then he heard more growling, again from behind him.

"Ohhh shit." He said, just before he took off running.

He instantly heard rustling following behind him. It had to be multiple creatures chasing him now.

"Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!" He shouted, now sprinting through the forest.

He had no idea where he was going, he just ran. But he was no athlete. Devon had never played any sports, or had ever worked out before. He wasn't fat, but was far from muscular. It didn't take long for him to become winded, but he suspected that whatever was following him must have been faster than he was. They were waiting for him to get tired and stop running on his own. Finally, he did. He knew if he kept going, he'd collapse, entirely unable to move. He stopped, and turned. Then they attacked.

A wolf-like creature lunged from the darkness. Devon put up his arm in self defense, and the creature clamped it's large maw down onto it. Devon yelled in pain, but his bone didn't break. The creatures teeth had no trouble slicing through his skin and muscle, however. It didn't let go. Devon saw the creature's face. A large wolf's head stared into his eyes as he held his arm in front of his face. It had whits and black fur, and it's bottom jaw seemed to be quite larger than the top one. Another one of the creatures lunged for his leg and snapped it's mouth onto it. He winced this time, but only let out a mild grunt. It hurt like hell. But instead of facing reality, Devon felt like he just didn't want to do that. He wouldn't let these things take him.

A sudden burst of defiance shown in Devon's eyes. He didn't know why, but he wouldn't give up. He couldn't give up. Something was pushing him, making him angry, making him fierce. He wanted to fight, he wanted to kill, he wanted... to burn. Suddenly Devon's arm, still held firm in the maw of the beast, started smoking. It then burst into flames, immediately incinerating the giant wolf's head. Devon watched as the creature burned. First the skin, then muscle, then the skull burned to ash before his eyes.

Before the other wolf had the chance to realize what just happened, Devon's calf also burst into flames. Again he watched as the beast's head went from dog to ash in mere seconds. That... felt good, he thought. Never before had he felt anything like this. But he began to feel less and less. Now looking worried and confused, Devon watched as the flames on his arm and leg began to shrink. Until after a few seconds, the flames were completely gone. He then noticed the energy he had just felt was fading too, and fading fast.

He fell to one knee, holding onto a nearby tree for support. His vision began to blur, and he could feel himself, again, falling unconscious. He could hear more howling coming his way. That was it then. Some adventure he had. Thrust into another world, only to burn alive then get eaten by some monster wolves. Oh well, he thought, at least he'd been able to take two down with him. He couldn't deny, that was pretty damn cool.

Just before he fell unconscious, however, Devon could have sworn he saw a blur of colors waft over him. And, shouting? But no, everything was blurring, and muffled. He was about to die. Surely his mind was capable of making up such nonsense at a time like this. He would accept it. He lived a boring life, but it was an ok one. No, he thought. No it can't end like this. It can't... end....like... this. Then, nothing.
