The webpage title was enough to stricken me in fear. ‘end of the world? Isn’t that a bit too farfetched?’ but my idea of farfetched was ceased by the image befalling my eyes.
“this… it can’t be” in front of me was a wall post in social media of a traveller in Japan. With an additional video catching the scene of an incredible and dire moment. I turn off the sound as I witness the video. A Caucasian man who was crying in tears as he hid himself behind a wall. After a lengthy video of him crying and mumbling something, the view change as the video shakes as if he was moving and his hand unstable.
But as soon as I saw what he was filming, it wasn’t his hand which was shaking but rather it was the ground trembling. The video was shooting a creature which was monstrous in size. Even after he points it upwards the head of the creature was not in sight. A monster with the size of a skyscraper, strolling through the road passing by over buildings in the metropolis of Tokyo.
From the look of it the traveller was taking safety on top of a building as the camera wide view angle shows the broken down road with craters due to the weight of the beast. The monstrous creature was two legged with its reptilian skin evidently shown through the video. At the end of the video, the building crumble as the traveller ran in frantic as it shown a monstrous tail sweeping through the building demolishing a part of it.
‘gojira? It can’t be’ a fictional monster created by man for the entertainment of the masses. ‘This is not a trailer for a new movie right’ but that notion of mine can’t be true since this video seems too real to compare to computer graphic and the time. All of these posts from Japan were all less than one day in age with the date 1st January 2017. The mark of a new year seems to be the mark of the world’s end. I scroll around for a few more post dated at the first of January and all of it were from the east. From Japan to Korea and from Korea to the Philippines. All of it were the same, monsters rampaging through the cities, countless number of people unknown whether dead or alive.
All of this seems surreal since my current situation although there were goblins but if larger monsters ran amok in its place what the hell can I actually do to fend it. Still it was the new reality that I need to face. Goblins, real life gojira and who knows what else exist out there. I turn off the phone as I my whole body slopes down. The goblins didn’t stop their rampage as the screams of my neighbors early demise came from both side of the house. My grip on the hammer tightens as letting go wasn’t an option.
There were so many things to think about but right at this moment I have nothing on my mind. My mind went blank as the emptiness leads me to my slumber. I slept.
BAM! BAM!
The sound of a metal door being bang reaches the furthest end of my eardrum awakening me from my slumber. The dozing eyes of mine open to the sight of the metal door of the back kitchen. My sight was poor within the darkness but even without sight the loud sound was enough for me to know, the goblin is close to breaking in.
I quickly stand rushing to the kitchen. Didn’t realize they would barge in through the backdoor. Gripping the hammer tightly, my hand can’t help but to tremble within this dire situation. For one thing, I never got in a fight much less in a life and death situation. I rack my brain trying to figure out how to deal with this as I pull a chair and block the wooden door by placing it at the door knob. A trick I learn from the movies, don’t know if it will work but it was worth a shot. Thankfully there were two doors overlapping each other at the kitchen one the metal door and the inner side a wooden door.
Even then, my nervousness was still not relief. The voice of those goblins wasn’t pleasant to the ears. I look around in the kitchen trying to find something usable in this situation but none catches my interest. Beads of sweats start to rain down on my forehead as my heart starts to beat louder and faster.
Then it breaks!
The sound of metal being thrown away clearly heard by the ears of mine. As the metal clutters on the ground it rattles my heart. Then the goblin starts hacking down on the wooden door. Each hit one by one starts to penetrate the 4 inch thick door. Bits of wood and splinter start to fly in the air covering the floor of my home’s kitchen.
Then an arm appears out of the small hole made by the diligent goblin. Its swing its arm in the air trying to struggle into that small hole attempting to enter it. But like I expected their brain wasn’t that clever as compare to us human. At least there’s some resemblance of those goblins that I know with these real life goblins. Their kind wasn’t brightest of them all.
Even though they were not a clever bunch, the scene of them easily taking down a fully grown men with ease was clear statement that they are not the weakest creature. Then a head appear out of the small hole, it glance side to side until its sight found me sitting beside the door. My whole body tremble as the flickering yellow eyes of his was focusing straight on me. As if their eyes were meant for the dark.
‘fuck! They have night vision’ i can hear the devious smile plastered on its face as the disgusting laugh of the goblin permeate through the air. Surprisingly, I by instinct moves without notice swinging the hammer on my hand directly at the pop out head on the door.
My forceful swing smack straight at the top of its head knocking its face facing downwards. The goblin inclines his head trying to spout gibberish words from his mouth. But I daringly hit it again swinging the hammer wildly. As my instinct tells me that letting this creature voice out would mean imminent danger. Gritting my teeth, the hammer head made contact with the goblin’s head countless times as I didn’t stop bludgeoning the head.
I didn’t let out a tint of my voice, as being careful was my first priority. I didn’t know how many swings I made to the goblin’s head but all I know is after a while, I stop hitting it and saw the limp head of the goblin motionless on the wooden door, not moving even for just a bit. My buttock drop to the floor as I my lungs try to catch my breath.
Even within the darkness my eyes adapted a bit, seeing drip of blood pooling on the floor. But then, the head jerks a bit, I didn’t miss it as I swing my hammer one more time cracking its skull leaving it lifeless one more time. I prepare myself if it was still alive but seconds pass and the head didn’t move. I nudge with the hammer intending to see whether it’s alive or not and thankfully it didn’t move.
I plop down to the floor with my breath ragged. For a shut-in like me this amount of moving was too much leading to my fatigue body. I rest for a while on the floor and afterwards I went to the toilet with the lights on. To my surprise, what I saw in the mirror froze me on the spot. Blur numbers fading in and out of the mirror caught me by surprise. My intent of washing my face was put on hold as I witness this spectacle.
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
‘What’s this’ I touched the mirror unable to believe of what’s appearing in it. My touch was pointless as I can only feel the smooth slippery glass. It was simple words with single digit numbers, I read out within the conscious of my mind.
‘Lv. 1 StR 3 vIT 3 AGI 4 sta 2 DeX 2’ is this, what I think it is. I was befuddled by all the things that happening. From goblins to large monsters and now this. A numeral description of my capabilities in other words these criteria represent who I am. The kind of things that you can only see in the virtual world and not real life.
Contemplating on what a few of this description meant. I understood basically most of it except for sta. it can be understood as stamina but I have never encounter such status within every game that I have play. As I was contemplating about this, the wooden door creaks with the noise of goblins prattling at the back of the kitchen.
‘shit!’ I walk out of the toilet and saw another hole was made above the lifeless goblin’s head. The prying eyes of the goblins glinted within the darkness. The hacking of the door was becoming more frequent with the size of the hole increased in size as each swing of their blunt weapon. I need reinforcement but exposing my brother to danger isn’t an option for me. I brace myself for the incoming goblins. I turn on the kitchen lights, as being in the dark would only expose me to more danger.
It’s better to even the odds with both my sight to its maximum usage. As the lights open, the goblins back away from the wooden door surprised by the sudden light. I stand in the middle of the kitchen facing the hole door, staring at the goblins hacking the door again making the hole much bigger.
Seeing its prey in front of it, two goblins couldn’t wait for one another as they struggle to enter with only an arm and a head manage to get through. These goblins were making a ruckus while it seems more of them were pushing from behind. I show no mercy as I know if I gave them a chance they would never let me live.
I know, upon this moment. The quality of cherishing a life will be erased. Only one thing resides in my mind and that was to survive. I maneuver my hammer in a wide swing hitting the stuck goblin with the sound of a cracking skull. The goblin was dazed for a while before it realized it been hit.
“KUKI!! KWIK!!”
Both goblins getting noisier flinging their arm around intending to enter the kitchen with their resolved no doubt eating me alive. Before it could happen, my madden swing landed on both heads of the goblins. I was hitting them non-stop not taking even a breather as the metal head of my hammer slam onto their skulls crushing their ugly big head turning them more horrifying than their present self.
“huff huff huff” my breath was ragged as I exert my utmost energy killing these two ugly aberration. Outside, the goblins were becoming more agitated in their behavior. Once again I flop down to the floor taking a break saving up energy for the next to come.
As I waited for my body to regain its strength, I suddenly remember about the numerical statistics that I saw. I went to the toilet once again and notice the flickering numbers floating within the reflection of the mirror.
‘I level up?’ within the mirror world I see my level increased by one. But what astound me more was the plus sign appearing beside the number for every attribute, subconsciously I held out my hand slightly touching the plus sign.
‘eyy???’ the plus sign disappears as the number for VIT increases from three to four. ‘arghhh!!!!’ I grab my head knowing that I made a big mistake. ‘Damn it! I accidentally distributed it to vit.’ A stroke of bad luck that I really do not appreciate. How the hell am I going to know that touching the damn mirror would act as a touch screen.
‘But wait, shouldn’t it be at least four more points left to distribute? It can’t be only one right?’ but to my dismay it was really only one point for me to distribute. If this was a game, this point allocation is certainly rubbish! What kind of game would only let someone to power up with only one point. I thought of planning to distribute it among only two of these attributes. But with my accidental touch and my so called careful growth plan it didn’t seem to work out.
“KUKI!!!”
BANG!
A loud sound crashing down from the back. I let out my head and saw the broken down wooden door lying on the floor. One by one those goblin steps into the kitchen. I didn’t notice from before but my sense of my smell picks up a stinking smell. Nonetheless the source must be coming from these creatures. Ugly, short, and smelly. What other negative features that these goblin have.
The goblins saw my head peeking out from the toilet. One of them yells out while the others follow from behind rushing towards me as if I’m a feast for their grumbling stomach.
I didn’t stand still as I ran up to the stairs taking higher ground. “argh!” a blunt hit landed on my back. ‘shit! These ugly creatures are fast!’ I withstand the pain making my way up the stairs. These goblins are a handful; their bodies are nimble and quite agile, reaching me in a matter of second.
As soon as I reach up the stairs I swing randomly in wide angle to my back hitting one goblin accidentally making it drop to the floor. I took my stance while the rest of these goblins start huddling up attempting to climb the narrow flight of stairs. Taking higher ground, I randomly swing the hammer attempting to fend off these goblins. Thankfully since the stairs was quite narrow, at most only two of them can confront me head on.
Still, facing me them head on was not easy like before, rather it puts me in a difficult situation. Although they were short, their body were wide thus maneuvering in this small space of stairs prove to be difficult for them. The reach of my hammer were too short for it to hit these ugly things. But then my back bump to something as I glance backward and saw an old golf bag that belongs to my father.
‘golf club!’ a lucky encounter which supposedly I should know already since my father placed this bag on the staircase for quite a long time now. Never mind my ignorance, I took out an iron golf club and quickly swing to the approaching goblin. The iron head smack head on to the side of the goblin face delivering it face directly to the concrete wall. Then another confront me, it was too fast the motion of its bone blunt weapon were already upon me.
I stand my ground, blocking the incoming attack using the shaft of the golf club. The force was too much as my knee bends and my back leans backwards. For a creature of this size, their small body does pack a punch. My heart was racing like a locomotive train on fire, the loom of death kept appearing on my mind leading me to be afraid of those negative outcomes. I pull my weight together as I use all of my strength pushing the goblin with the strength my leg. It was not a kick but rather a forceful push, knocking the goblin back a bit as I swing the golf club in succession like a fourth batter hitting a homerun. It hit the goblin body driving its step backward crashing through the group of goblins below.
The first goblin that’s been hit before has already gotten up in its feet rushing towards me angered by my show of force. The goblin was like in a frenzy state, swinging its weapon around randomly hitting the floor staircase and the wall. I back away from his onslaught as I prepare to lash out my own attack.
‘Damn it, where’s my brother when I need him.’ I did hope for my brother to come for my rescue since my parent’s bedroom was just up the stairs. But for once, he’s being too obedient from my order. Can’t he hear the ruckus at the staircase?
“argh!” I let out a painful cry as one of those random swings hit me during my momentary lapse of complaining. The bone club hit me on the shin; my pain tolerance was quite low seeing how the pain made me to drop on one knee. Even the previous hit from before starts to spread on me like a pulsating node of pain.
In the moment of anger, I lash out a random swing of my own. The iron head of the club clash with the bone club pushing mine away as the force behind the opponent swing was too much for me to contend. I can’t believe a goblin would be this strong. The undisturbed attack smacks my thigh delivering an intense pain jolting my whole nervous system.
“Fuck!” saliva dripping from my mouth as the pain was too much for me to bear. I subconsciously retreat limping up the stairs. Unknowingly fear has grip the whole being of me. I was too naïve, the first two times were consider easy due to those goblins simply stuck and not being able to retaliate but now with them being able to counter attack. I was left with bruises on my body.
But as I ascend up the stairs, I saw the door to my parent’s bedroom. My whole body froze as the thought of my family being mutilated by those scums flashes in my mind. I grit my teeth as I turn back facing those goblins once again.
“DIE!” I yell in an attempt to burn my courage facing these ugly creatures. With a strengthen resolve, the iron head flew in an arc from above hitting the goblin straight to its collarbone. A slight cracking sound was heard but that did not stop my onslaught and neither does them. Another goblin encroaches upon me as I quickly swing the golf club smashing its face from the side.
I kick the one with broken collarbone sending it back to the group colliding and disarray their already chaotic group. Taking the window of opportunity, a flurry of attack befalls on to the unfortunate goblin that was hit on the face. Attack after attack, the head was utterly disfigured with some part of it turning into mush.
My breath was erratic and I didn’t have time to recuperate as another goblin launch its attack. ‘one down’ I mutter slowly as I already prepared myself to face these abomination. I didn’t know how much time has passed but all I can remember was my constant arm constantly swinging the golf club hitting as many goblins that I could while receiving my fair share of injuries.
The long fought battle end with only the sound of my shallow breath. My left forearm was utterly broken while defending my face from the brunt of an attack. But that didn’t stop me from pushing forward clobbering one of them to death. Those mangy goblins even dare biting me if not for my quick retaliation I would have lost a chunk of meat. I look down at the bite mark with blood seeping out of it, thinking about it, I didn’t know how I survive this ordeal. I was fighting them single handedly, one against eight or so. A miracle I would I say but a miracle that end me up in tatter.
I thought of cleaning myself up but my body felt heavy like a ton of lead and not an ounce of energy was within my body. My eyelids were becoming heavier as I droop down slowly. ‘No I can’t sleep yet. i…’ I fall asleep amidst the stinking corpse and pool of goblin’s blood. The night was silent as nothing disturbs me.
