First Life: Ruby

Her face was contorting into a painful expression. I can feel her warm fingers glide across my face. She moves the black strands of hair out of my face.

“I’m so sorry sister. I’m so sorry,” she say as she caress my cheek. Tears began to run down her cheeks uncontrollably. She picks me up and embraces me. I can feel my blood warm and oozing out of my body. It creates a puddle around us.

“Lily,” my voice is hoarse and I ask the question even though I know the answer, “am I going to die here?” She rubs my back and shakes her head.

“No, you won’t die here. You will just go to sleep okay, and then when I wake you up we can go play at the park again.”

“I’m not ten anymore Lily. I’m twenty-five.”

“I know that, but you still want to play at the park don’t you?” She strokes my hair. It’s comforting.

“Yeah. I still want to play hide and seek again,” I can feel my tears streaming down my face.

“Shall I sing you your favorite bed song,” She continues to stroke my hair. I nod my head. “I haven’t sung it in a while so bear with me. Oh my dear Ruby, my beautiful sister. Close your eyes and fall back on dreamland. Here with sister will be with you, here sister will stay. Oh my dear Ruby, do not be afraid. I will stay here, sister will be here. Oh my dear Ruby, close your eyes and rest. Oh my dear Ruby, I love you.” She finishes. I smile as I wrap my arms around her one last time. I close my eyes, and the darkness turns to smile at me like it was waiting for me this whole time.

I open my eyes to see a man with shackles on his legs. There are four chains connecting the shackles together. His arms are cuffed and hanging behind him. They are chained and attached to the wall. I look at the man and he sits there lifeless. He has cuts and blood all over him. It looks as if he’s been continuously whipped. His wounds look raw and painful. I feel sadness within the depths inside of me.

“Hello,” I call out. He looks up slowly, and his eyes widen as he sees me. I feel a sudden urge to cry as I see tears stream down his face.

“First life,” his hoarse voice croaks out. “how was it?”

“What? What are you talking about?” I say. He gives me a sad look and shakes his head.

“Nothing… I just really missed you.” He gives me a weak smile. How could he missed me? I have never even seen him before, yet my heart feels like it’s being pulled apart. I moved towards him, but two figures dressed in white robes and veil blocks me.

“Who are you,” I get out before both of them grasp my arms.

“No!” He screams out. “Please, let me just look at her a bit longer. Please!” He begs. I don’t why, but my own body is resisting them.

“Let me go!” I yell. The keep dragging me away and I hear a door open from behind me. I look at the man and he looks so pained and sad. “I love you,” I say to him before the two figures push me out of the door. One of the chains disappear. I see him screaming in sadness at my response before I fall into darkness.
