Hana’s dad looked like a pirate. He had long, stringy blonde hair and he wore an eyepatch. He was also very tall.
“Why does your dad only have one eye?” Peter asked Hana one day after her dad dropped Hana off to play and they waited for Ricky to get out of the bathroom.
“He lost it at sea,” Hana answered easily, but Peter was frightened at the possibility of what could happen at sea to make a man lose his eye.
On another day, Ricky asked a similar question of Hana as Peter went inside to get a drink and the other two remained by the koi pond.

“What happened to your dad’s eye?” he asked.
“He didn’t wear safety goggles at work,” Hana answered, tossing another piece of fish food in the pond.
Ricky paled. At work? The work that he and Peter were going to inherit someday?
Peter and Ricky resolved to never play at Hana’s house because they were too scared of what could potentially happen with Hana’s dad around. They called him the Captain behind his back and then eventually to his face because they realized it made him laugh.
The Captain and Hana never explained their game of always telling a new story about how he lost his eye, the truth being much too mundane (he was just born without one).
