ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING (PROLOGUE 5)

The next day, Ricky and Peter were about to go wait outside for Hana when they were intercepted by their father, who gently but sternly took them by the shoulders and squished them together in front of him.

“Listen, sons,” their father started in a strange, serious voice. The boys tried not to laugh at the red and deranged look in his eyes. “Listen. You need to woo that girl.”

Peter cocked his head. Ricky frowned. “Woo?” Peter asked.

“What do you mean?” Ricky asked.

The father went on as if they hadn’t asked anything. “I don’t care how you do it. I don’t care what you have to do to get her to fall in love with you. But you must do this. For me. For us. I entrust this task to you. Do you take it?”

The boys were unclear who of them their father was speaking to at the end. They both shared a glance with each other, confused and just wanting to play, before they turned back to their father. “Which girl do you mean?” Ricky asked.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“Do you mean Hana?” Peter asked.

The father jostled the boys’ shoulders, about to ask them again if they accepted his task, when the doorbell rang. The boys immediately turned from their father and ran to the door, jerking it open despite their father’s protests to wait just a second so he could check.

“Hana!” Peter shouted.

Hana, startled, had been sucking on a piece of candy that she promptly spat out when the boys yanked the door open.

Upon further inspection of the candy, the father realized that Hana had been sucking on a rock.

“Hey!” Hana shouted, holding out her hands after wiping at her mouth, and both Ricky and Peter reached out and grabbed one each before they dashed out to the yard, not even a goodbye to their red and deranged father.

“God help us,” the father breathed, watching as his sons trailed helplessly after the girl holding the key to their fortune.

From behind him, materializing from seemingly nowhere, Winston chuckled. “And don’t forget about luck.”
