Chapter 19 - Struggling for life

Chapter 19 - Struggling for life

The leaves of the plants surrounded everything making a kind of a maze that hid everything.

Each of Miguel's steps were careful, he made no sound to alert the creatures.

He slid in and out from the leaves, leaving no traces behind. But Miguel knew that it would be futile, when the creatures were thrashing about everything in their front.

Miguel had just left one of the leaves to take another, when a creature saw him.

It was the third he had seen of the gray-eyed.

It was definitely someone suitable for the thrashing and the carnage left in his wake, because he had even bigger and stronger claws than the other creatures he had seen.

For a moment he stiffened, but he quickly hid behind another of the leaves.

The outer edge of the vegetation had sparser plants and as such it was difficult to hide on the outer edges.

But as he traveled deeper and deeper Miguel found the canopies of the plants.

Closer and almost gluing itself on one another. It was such that at one time he could feel no gap between them. They made their own surface by the conjoining of the leaves, which acted as a strong ground on an upper level.

The creature moved forward, each slash shredded the leaves in front of him to pieces.

Finally after a few more of the slashes, it was in front of the place. Where the prey had hid himself.

The glow of the lightning insect illuminated the part in front of him.

This time without wasting a second, it used most of the power its claws could contain to slash in front of him.

A sound accompanied after it, a blast, a rustle of winds that dared to blast everything in front of it.

Leaves scattered, torn to bits from the after effect of the wind that followed behind.

For an instant the creature's mouth opened in thought, almost in delight of having torn its prey in bits of gore and blood.

But it quickly transformed into a piercing scream when it found that there wasn't anything there.

Miguel was safe from a hair breadth, he had slipped downward. And gone he was from the place where the creature was rampaging.

Its screams filled the air. Miguel had to quickly found another route to avoid the creatures.

The game of hide and seek was a very long one.

Every time Miguel would feel the dread of death, but each time, he would find something to get away.

It was as if he was more familiar with the place than those creatures. Finally, after much struggle, Miguel put one of his hands to grip onto a petal.

The constant climbing and grabbing had strengthened his arms, such that he was easily able to lift himself inside the flower.

He slipped inside the flower, the frictionless of a surface was a delight for any kid, but for him, it only added more to his trouble.

He wanted to use the surface of one of the petals to climb up. The flowers were of varied sizes and even the leaves were present.

The variation only increased the difficulty to find a path for himself. But instead of going up, he slipped and found himself inside the flower.

"Freaking… piece of.." Miguel cursed as he tried to lift himself. There was dew present in this specific flower, it stopped him from moving out of its surface.

Each time he would lift himself, he would find himself falling onto the very deep of the flower.

Only after exhausting a portion of his remaining stamina was he able to get out from the flower, to find two of the gray-eyed creatures coming his way.

There were two options for Miguel at that moment: either he would leave his grip from the flower, falling deep inside it and waiting for his certain death or else he could run away and the creatures would chase him from behind but even it would be a certain death.

Miguel didn't have to wait for an answer to hit his mind. It was better to run away and accept his death and hide behind and wait for it.

He grabbed one of the flowers some meters away from him, he needed a big jump to clear that and he did as he grabbed the petal, weighing down on his weight.

He quickly placed one of his elbows on the petals to lift himself, the creatures just a few moments away from reaching him.

They weren't sparing any effort at all, they moved like any four-legged creature would to the best of its strength.

It was difficult for him to even remain in this condition.

The grip from his elbows was weakening by the seconds, he used the force of his entire body as he gave himself a final lift.

He swung one of his legs on to it, sliding behind the petal.

The slide wasn't a small one, each of the petals that had gotten separated from the flowers, were placed in a continuous manner acting as a continuum of a slide.

After some distance into the ride he rolled his body to get away from the path further and slid once again into oblivion.

The place was good for hiding from the two of them for that moment, but he needed to find a place away from all of those creatures.

All the running left him exhausted.

He had been chased for hours now, and he didn't have an approximation to say that it wouldn't end just a few hours more.

He heard the sound of creatures, just sliding past the path.

He could sigh a few moments in rest and then he needed to continue, because he knew each moment of rest could result in his certain death.

After being chased continuously by those sharp toothed creatures, Miguel had been certain on one thing, that those creatures were good predators.

The only thing that disfavored them at the moment, the environment, was something Miguel favored above all of it.

The game of hiding behind made Miguel tired. He got away from another of the creatures. This time there had been three of them chasing from two directions.

The two of them were coming from the same direction and one from the opposite direction.

The one which was alone was nearer to him, and he didn't feel that he had a chance to get away from it even if he tried any of the previous tricks.

Miguel was ready to fight with his all when he saw the creature change direction and go toward the other two, not taking a glance at him at all.

The single gray-eyed creature fought with the other two single-handedly. The battle was vicious, each of them trying to take a bite of another.

It was good that they had a fierce sense of competitiveness, which caused them to fight with each other.

Miguel could have seen his death coming too early if they hadn't started infighting at that moment.

He didn't wait to see who would become the winner of the battle, and who would grab the last of him.

He silently got away from all the noise. The battle was especially fierce; he had hurried because the noise from the battle must have alerted the others.

He jumped on two of the leaves in quick succession and found himself between the petals that blocked the sight in front of him.

He jumped with all his might, thinking he might be able to get through them, but he quickly fell back onto the leaves.

The leaves trembled under his weight, but Miguel quickly got up when he saw a thorn hiding behind all the flowers and leaves of those plants.

He made his way toward it with caution, so as not to get pierce by it.

The thorn obscured everything away from his vision. He had to squat to even see around, he found a small opening that later proved to be a closed one.

He crawled under the tightening of vegetation all around him.

The maze was very much obscure and it only increased the difficulty.

But Miguel felt glad because the more complex it was for him, the more complex it would be for other creatures. Who were still roaming in a layer below.

Sometimes he would find sharp corners that would come unannounced, and there wasn't even too much light to give a way for him.

The lightning insects only roamed around in the ground or on the upper levels, but it seemed that they too aren't able to pass this level.

"Ouch!" Miguel grabbed his forehead, as one of the sharp edges missed his observation and got to his head.

Miguel grabbed a bit of the petal that he was resting on and applied it on his forehead.

The coolness helped in easing the pain. He turned around once again, continuing on his path.

When he saw the light reflected by the leaf that covered the front of him.

With a good amount of force, he slid the leaf to get a view that was in front of him.
