Chapter 2 - Passing Each Other

"Who are you, 'Mr. Levi'?

"I do not wish to antagonise you, but the circumstances in which you arrived here are most unusual.

"Falling from the sky? Healing from injuries that no mortal could survive? Even your clothes are self-repairing!

"Who are you? Where are you from? For what purpose have you come here?"

Levi sighed. He had half expected these sort of questions from the Master when Javiel had told him about him. From what he could feel, this Master Shen was about as powerful as him. He couldn't simply lie his way out of this one. Even if he could, he didn't wish to.

"Master Shen, my true name is Levi Dane. I am from a place far beyond these lands. As for my purpose... I have been banished from my home and I must become stronger to return."

Master Shen raised one of his eyebrows, "Why were you banished?"

"I... I slaughtered one of the clans of that place."

Master Shen's expression grew dark, "So, a gratuitous murderer, is it?"

Levi shouted back, "No! I would never unjustly kill someone."

"Is that so? Then, why is it that you were banished from this so-called 'beyond'? What did this clan do that warranted death?"

Levi felt a bit apprehensive at telling him, but he eventually settled on only telling him things of importance, "One of the men of that clan committed an unforgiveable atrocity against my family. At least, I deemed it unforgivable. In my eyes, the only worthy punishment was death. But if I killed only him, his clan would certainly strike back and my family would have to fight a war. I could not let that happen."

Master Shen pondered for a moment. "Hmm, even despite your 'justified reasons' why should I trust a murderer?"

Levi instantly replied, "You shouldn't. I will leave as soon as I am able."

Master Shen thought and then started nodding while stroking his beard. Suddenly he called out, "Javiel!"

Levi wasn't at all surprised when Javiel came in immediately.

"Yes, Master?"

"Go bring Diana."

"Yes Master."

Now that was surprising. Levi wondered why he would call Diana. Could it be to ask her opinion of him. Although questionable as to why he would attach so much importance to her opinion, it was the only explanation he could think of.

A while later Javiel came back with Diana in tow then promptly left the room.

"Diana, what do you think about this man?"

"Huh?" Diana was visibly surprised at the question.

"What do you think about his character and his personality?"

"Um, I... I," it was quite embarrassing to talk about someone in front of the person themselves, luckily she had nothing bad to say, "I believe he is a good person. Despite the things he may have done, I truly think he wants to be good."

Levi had no idea how she had gotten all that from the short time they had spent together. Especially when he was hardly talking through most of it. But still, he was still happy to hear it and if it helped his cause that couldn't hurt.

"Hmm, I see... You may leave."

Diana stood awkwardly for a moment before bowing then leaving.

After a moment, Master Shen spoke, "My student believes you to be a good person. Do you agree?"

"I... do not believe the world so black and white. Anyone can say, think, or even wish to do anything, but it makes no difference if they don't actually do it. In the end, you can only judge someone by their actions."

For a while there was silence. Then Master Shen spoke, "Stay, for a while. If you are really not from these lands you would not know anything about where to go. Truthfully, I wish to hear about this 'beyond' of yours."

With that, he left.
