//** Continuation of chapter 20. (From 20.1) **//
-I have one.
-Arata, what is it.
Since this morning Arata had one question that he had to ask no matter what. He waited until Gerald ended. It looked like everyone else forgotten about it
-you said you will explain it later. Why were you repairing the painting in the church?
It was really strange after all. Most of the city was destroyed and out of sudden, they started to put back the painting on the wall.
-I forgotten about that.
-me too and it was such a trouble.
With day passing, some forgotten about it. Gerald answered.
-that’s easy one. If you look on the internet or ask people around, you will find out that to start 100th level challenge you need to knell down before the altar in the church, cathedral or anything of this kind and say the right words. Still the people that are spreading that info around are all wrong. What is important is not the altar but the painting. Without the painting it won’t work on the other hand altar itself is completely useless as without it one can start the challenge no problem. So, we were repairing the painting so you guys can use it later as if we did not, who knows what will happen with it. In worst case scenario we would have to travel to some other city.
-oh, that’s pretty simple reason.
-now that you mentioned the cathedral, I also have one question.
Gerald said so.
-what is it?
-not you Arata. Kotori, what did you receive from Arcon? I was wondering could that be. It’s not natural for him to give gifts to someone.
-well I also didn’t see it yet. It was a large bag. But he told me that it will help me because I will definitely hit some wall. You know what limitation he spoke about?
Gerald wondered for a second then answered.
-if you were to have any limitation in your play, it would not be because you lack something as the player. The only possibility is your class.
-I thought the rank 3 was good.
-it definitely is, what I meant is the nature of your class. As you know healers are not meant for solo play. That’s why if you ever wanted to fight him it would be hard for you as you are now. Even though some people have different opinion, the class makes a huge difference for players as it’s the core of everyone’s abilities after all.
-but I wanted to be a healer and I never seen problem with that.
-see, that is also the reason why you can’t select one strongest player, it’s impossible to compare fighter with healer like you. What is more important good dps or good healing?
-that is never ending dispute.
Zen added this one.
-and for no reason. Without the healers you won’t win a hard fight as everyone will die but without people in field making damage you won’t win either. It’s a never ending cycle. We won’t go into that dispute here though. It’s a waste of time anyway. So Kotori what did you got?
Kotori crossed her fingers and looked through the menus.
-I can’t do anything else with this bag apart from taking it out.
-yes, you can’t open boxes or bags inside inventory. You have to do it manually. But you can hide items within closed box inside your inventory.
Gerald explained.
-Arata make some space I taking it out.
Kotori put it on couch that they were sitting on. It was large blue bag closed at the top tied by golden string.
-I still don’t know if I shouldn’t just throw it away. I mean it’s from enemy.
-it’s not like Arcon to leave some bomb inside it.
Gerald tried to relax her but he didn’t completely understand.
-I am talking that I shouldn’t take some gift. I have always gathered everything by myself and never asked for handout.
-noble, noble. Still I wouldn’t look at it that way.
-changing how you look at it doesn’t change the fact what it really is.
Although Kotori had her own conviction there was no way that Gerald doesn’t find out what’s inside the bag.
-but wasn’t it reward for surviving his attack? Rewards for one shouldn’t be thrown out. They should be show off to everyone right on the open.
-but.
-ah… don’t you know the saying that one shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
-a good saying but what about a Trojan horse?
-don’t add unnecessary comment Loki. Anyway Kotori, open the bag and you will worry about other things later..
Even Kotori was easily played by Gerald’s words. Well she had no chance on saying no from the beginning. If something interested him, Gerald would do everything to find what’s inside.
Kotori removed the golden string. The bag disappeared.
-whaa…
-waaa…
Both on Kotori and Arata had to quickly catch what was falling for them so it doesn’t hit them. The items scale shouldn’t fit the bag but somehow it did.
What Arata catch in hands was a long two handed sword sheathed in sheath. The hilt and sheath was a mix of blue and gold colors and looked majestic. Sword was quite large, much larger than one handed swords of Arata, or Yuki’s white katana. It was not easy but Arata managed to stabilize it in hands when it fallen on him.
Kotori on the other hand was crushed by some kind of armor. The armor was in the same colors as the sword, blue and gold plus white.
-Arata help.
Arata put down the sword and quickly released Kotori from weight. The armor landed between them on some other items that were underneath it. Arata had no chance yet to see them.
The golden armor with blue cloth. The chest piece and the armor on shoulders were in golden armor then the lower part was a long dress like in color of blue with two golden armor parts on both sides. They were tied together by belts which were going above the inside. Front part of down part was in triangle in white.
Although lower parts was a single dress like armor rather knight’s pants it didn’t exactly indicated that it was for woman. In games there were many characters going in robes. Knight’s lower also sometimes were like that. For example Gerald’s grey-red armor was the same. Still one could see that it was definitely armor designed for woman. The lower part was much more wide than Gerald’s one, a little like ball dress. Still it wouldn’t slow down one’s movements. The chest piece was mostly in gold and it was designed for slim person but the breast part indicated that it was for females.
Everything was in Kotori’s size. Also her gold colored hair would also go well together with golden armor. Still she said.
-so Gerald, you still think that this reward would be of any use to me?
Kotori wasn’t too excited at all after reading one of the descriptions on them.
-those are all class items. You won’t even be able to equip it.
Gerald voiced her reason for that.
-why did that guy even give it to me? To play around with me? Or maybe to angry me? …well I will just sell it and get some gold but he really did angry me with this one. I wanted to see how I would look in this armor after first seeing it but it’s a class item so I can’t even equip it.
“I would also want to see that.”
Arata would not speak this opinion. Gerald continued.
-if you are going to sell it, go to NPC shops as it will be hard to find person with specific class and I don’t think that you would get that much more from the player than from NPC. Normally people don’t even have much gold on them after all. This armor, let’s see, oh I was even there when it’s dropped. It’s for golden champion if I remember correctly. Its rank is 3 but I don’t remember hearing about anyone with this class. What about you Loki?
-me neither. Although, I know one NPC who has that class. Still, I am not sure where would we even have to start looking to find him. He was a traveling NPC and as far as I know he can be anywhere right now.
-hey Kotori there are other things.
Arata moved armor a little and revealed other things.
-this sword is also useless as this armor, but is there anything else?
Kotori asked as Arata started to take outer items from under the table on the table.
-gauntlet, shoe.
Naturally those weren’t simple shoes but long to knee golden plate knight’s boots.
-still nothing useful.
-another shoe, and another gauntlet. Well they are going in pair. There is a helmet as well.
Arata took out golden helmet, although one could question its functionality. There was only one space through which one could see anything and that was a straight line opening. Kotori got tired
-Arata, isn’t there something useful?
-apart from that there are also three books.
-books?
Gerald repeated Arata’s words as he still was taking out from underneath the table.
-first, the golden one… .
Arata took the first one out but the moment he did.
-if I am not mistaken it’s a class book.
Gerald commented like this.
-how does it work? Can I just take it and I will have another class. Then I would be able to equip all those things.
Kotori got excited and asked as she really wanted to equip those. It was probably not to wear them constantly but to simply equip them just this once.
-unfortunately it’s not that useful as it would be completely unbalanced. Class book do not give you additional class but with their use you can change your class into the one from the book which is as I assume golden champion. I am right Arata?
-yep, written on the front.
-well, Kotori I won’t stop you but do you really want to change into that class? I personally do not recommend it.
-I also don’t think I would do well in some knight class. And I wanted to be a healer. Anyway Arata what are other books. If it some ‘super healer class’ with rank one I might consider the change then.
After all Kotori was a healer. Should she change her class she would become some third rate player who can’t make use of their class. In that way the skill books were actually dangerous to use. In the city of beginners one would get the class that theoretically suits them, still with the use of the skill book you can alert it yourself which may not turn out that good. Still, skill books were rare enough that the instances of someone having this problem did not happen too often.
Arata took the second book.
-the second is… well the title is memories of two-handed sword fighter.
-oh, that’s even more rare then previous one.
Loki commented.
-how does it work?
-simply put it you use it, book disappears and you have easier time in grasping how use two-handed sword fighting style.
-so, one become master of sword in a second?
Kotori asked.
-Kotori, its a fraud.
Arata interrupted here.
-you don’t know yet Arata. Maybe it is possible somehow.
-I am telling you it’s a fraud.
Arata had his own conviction about it. Fighting was not easy enough so one can learn it with some magical item.
-Arata is right, it’s not that miracle item even if it’s indeed quite rare. Although it does theoretically helps a little and it definitely doesn’t hurt.
Gerald corrected Loki’s explanation.
-hey it’s not fair why did she got all that!
Zen bursted out. It was indeed not something that player on low level could get a hands on. Combined with all other things it would make amateur into master knight. Gerald gave a good explanation to that comment though.
-fair? But this game is not fair in the first place. It takes after the real world that is even more unfair. If something is not fair it all comes from the fact that life is not fair in general. In this case you can guess that any player can do what they want as it is their right. I would say that this time it is not completely unfair as if you survived that attack maybe you would get something as well.
-Kotori, I won’t lose to you!
It seemed like Zen did not listen to that explanation at all and simply shouted. Kotori didn’t even think to answer to this though and she instead asked.
-so with all this item I would have skills as a melee fighter, right?
-you aren’t really enthusiastic about it.
-well, Arata already said it’s a fraud didn’t he?
-you think he knows more than me.
-I, at least trust him more than I could ever trust you.
-well, I can’t do anything here I guess. Then Arata care to explain your thoughts a little more.
-well it quite simple, you can’t learn how to fight by reading some book or hearing theories. Those are the things that sure help but in the end the only thing that really matter is the practice.
-ho grand words you say.
-those are my grandfather words. And if someone’s know how to teach fighting it is him.
-still Arata, you shouldn’t underestimate magic of this game. What if I tell you that there are some things that you can’t explain with logic?
-like?
-learning how to fight after reading single sentence in this book.
-only idiots would believe in such things
Arata would not change his mind. Kotori put the end to dispute.
-I was just asking supposedly, I am not changing my class. As I said I planned to be a healer from the start. I also think that Arata is right.
-I never said that you should change your class. Changing your style of play out of nowhere would waste all efforts that you put so far and I really happy having a healer like you in my guild. So you want that officer position?
Gerald asked once more. This time Kotori thought about it at least.
-I will think about it some other time. For now, we have like what, nine players plus one NPC in guild. What you need officers for?
Still her answer stated the facts perfectly.
-that’s also true, but don’t call Maya NPC, she is an inhabitant of this world.
“That’s some nice sounding definition of an NPC. Maybe I should start using it as well.”
Arata though like that as after all he already meet few in game characters the he got to know and calling them NPCs could be somewhat an insult as in his mind NPCs were something that he would normally only see on the screen of his monitor.
-still did that guy really thought I would change the class just to fight him? Who does he think he is?
Kotori followed up with another question.
-as far as I know, he usually do something with clean reason in mind, giving a stock of items to someone, just so that can can sell them on the market is not in his nature. I think that we are still missing something.
-well whatever it is, I am going to stay as the healer. Although I still wish I could equip those items once to make some pictures. Hey Arata how do you think would I look in this? Beautiful right?
-… .
Kotori started to shake him.
-hey Arata! How would I look in those items?
-why don’t you just try them?
-wait, you think I should change the class?
-hmm, with this combination, there is no need for that.
-what do you mean Arata?…
Arata’s words were not intact somehow. He showed the last book. White cover with no text on it. Gerald asked.
-never seen anything like that. So what is it?
-here Kotori.
“If she use all and equip all those items I will probably have no chance against her in future. Still she always wanted to be good player so she should be happy.”
Kotori’s reaction what somewhat different to what Arata expected. There was hardly any reaction at all after she saw the first page in the book. But then she said.
-I decided…
Kotori stopped after first page and said in strong voice.
-even if it is from enemy, I will use it.
-wait, what was the last book?
Gerald was unclear and he didn’t have idea why Kotori suddenly changed her decision.
-you don’t know?
Arata asked.
-how should I know? It may not look like it but I don’t know everything. I can’t know things that I don’t know. Loki you have any ideas?
-there are many unknown books in this world so naturally I can’t tell just looking. Arata what is it?
-I would say that this bag was the most unfair thing that can happen.
-life is not fair, that’s why anything can happen.
Gerald commented with the same words once again.
-that is beyond being unfair. Kotori care to show them.
Kotori was looking at the white book without saying anything, thinking of something. She opened the book on first page and placed it front for Gerald and Loki to see. Everyone else also changed their position to see it. They weren’t saying anything for some time then Loki broke the silence.
-I didn’t know that something like that exist, but doesn’t that book break the balance of a game a little too much.
This story has been unlawfully obtained without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.
-so far the only way to get that was getting it in city of beginners, right? Where did he found that?
-you shouldn’t be asking that. I am asking why did he left something like this with Kotori? I mean, even he would definitely need it as well and it would be incredibly good for him. Not only him, me, you, it would actually be useful to practically everyone.
-for him his class doesn’t mean a thing, you know how he plays.
The book title was. Secret of dual class. The one who use it make a new spot in which he can put new class. The only copy of this book found in world was right now in Kotori’s hands. Kotori asked.
-does it works how I think it does?
-best way to find out is to use it. Although don’t do it in house, everyone lets come outside.
-why outside?
-learning new class in the house can sometimes destroy it.
Gerald stood up and showed the way. Kotori pick up all items to her inventory.
They used a back door to leave the villa. Those doors lead too small garden behind the villa.
-do the honors. Also save the memories of fighter for later time.
Gerald made the last advice.
Kotori was standing in the middle and everyone moved to the side with Gerald’s instruction.
Naturally Kotori started with white book, the secret of dual class.
Skill books weren’t similar to normal books. Although their thickness suggested that they were long in fact they were just a few sentences.
-one nature was bestowed by god. One nature I will create on my own. Two natures will be in me. The one that was, and the one that will be.
With those words white book disappeared in a flash. Kotori’s body started to emit white light. She even lifted up from the ground and started to levitate. The effect lasted about 10 seconds and she land back right away. Light also vanished but before that happened in the sky the golden book appeared once again. This time however it was no longer the class change book but the one that had description of the class and the skills in it, namely a skill book of golden champion class.
-how was it?
Arata asked.
-nothing special, although I got scared when I started to fly. But it was pleasant surprise. Time for the class book.
Class book was usually distributed at the end of first month of play. It possessed the description of the class and spells that one could use after getting that class. Many pages were blank but they would theoretically fill up with level increased or other abilities gathered from for example class quests. Still Kotori’s book right now didn’t have all of that, just like the skill book it only had few sentences in it.
Kotori took out the golden book and once again started to read it.
-They said that destiny is something that you can’t affect. That’s it’s a fate that you can run away from but I choose my own fate.
This time it was not a simple lighting. A golden thunder hit right into Kotori even if there were no clouds that would signal the storm. Upon hitting thunder made a lot of noise and ground around Kotori was destroyed. Despite the damage nothing happen to Kotori though although Arata still got worried.
-Kotori you okay?
-hmm, nothing changed apart from my status window. And I also got few achievements…
Although this game featured achievements system one wouldn’t be able to see them apart from one moment that they pop out. Nor could someone show them to others. Kotori followed up with question.
-I have question. What does instant equip mean and how it works?
Gerald took this one.
-It’s an enchantment. It’s allows you to equip items with just thinking about it. It works the same way as casting spells and using abilities. Normally one can’t equip their items at any times, for example, right in the middle of fight you can’t change the armor you are wearing, still the instant equip enchant would allow it. Do you have it on your items?
-yes.
-then try to equip them like I just told you. The effect will be instant and compared to normal equipping you don’t need to hide in bushes as we won’t see a thing.
-I will trust you on word.
-well you don’t have to trust me on word look…
Gerald said like that and in instant the armor that he was wearing changed into a different one. Well, it happened only for few seconds so Arata didn’t manage to perceive it fast enough although the theme of that armor was a crimson flame. Still as mentioned second later Gerald returned to his usual equipment.
-see just like that, still you won’t be able to go back with the change as I just did because to do that you would need to have the instant equip enchant on both of your equipment and your current one doesn’t have it. Well it’s not a problem right now as you can simply change it back normally in menu. Anyway go ahead and equip it.
-okay.
-no wait!…
Loki tried to stop her but it was too late. Kotori emitted blinding light and golden armor appeared on her. She didn’t equip a helmet or the sword, still the impact was huge.
“I never have seen her like that.”
Kotori was emitting beauty but different than usual. It was more elegant and mature. But Arata had no time to admire her as Loki cut him out from dreaming.
-Arata, go catch her!
-hmm?
-he will fall in the second.
Arata look once again at Kotori still not knowing what it was about. Then he found out that she is about to fall to the ground as she stated to waver to the front and then to the back.
[Lighting speed]
Arata speed up with skill and catch her before she could fall. The moment he did that he understood what happened. The armor weight was not a joke even for him. Luckily Arata could support Kotori at standing and they didn’t fall together.
“She should have stats for it if she can equip it.”
-hey Kotori is it too heavy?
-heavy? I can’t even move my finger in the glove. Em… Arata tell everyone to go somewhere so I can change back.
-you heard her!
-sorry, we forgotten about one thing. There are some extra details with new classes.
With apologize Loki send everyone inside. The only two left were Arata and Kotori.
-well you can change now.
-Arata, you too! At least, close your eyes.
“And she tells me to be honest with my feelings.”
With a smirk Arata closed his eyes.
Kotori would joke all day about how easygoing she in everything. Like phone prank call three days ago but whenever it would come to anything actually happening she would always show her true self. Arata always knew how she felt, that’s why he always was holding himself back. He knew that what she was saying and what she really meant was two different things. Kotori proved his theory one again although sometimes it was really hard to catch when Kotori was playing around and when she was not.
-hey Arata, you should try to peep at least.
After changing back Kotori proved his theory yet once again.
-eh, you really never change.
-anyway I changed so let’s go back.
Back in her usually equipment they let the garden and went inside. As they entered they could hear a loud talk about how is it unfair that Kotori got all those items. It was Zen who making a monologue. He was also adding that no matter what he won’t lose which was something he already said one.
Arata and Kotori sit back to the seats. Loki explained the earlier occurrence.
-you see, even if you just got new class it doesn’t mean you have all necessary stats for it. Your first class was probably intelligence and wisdom based, right? But the second is strength and vitality.
-so what should I do?
-all you need to do is level up. If you got dual class at start it wouldn’t be a problem. But if you now got new class later on and that is based on completely different stats than previous one you won’t be able to use this class to full advantage right away. But as you level up your stats will go up at high speed. By the time you hit 99 you will get about 60% of all stats that you should get to that point. After that is level 100. There is huge difference in leveling up after level 100. You need to put a lot more work into every level. In easy terms, they require a lot of experience and monsters don’t give much more than ones before. The other thing is that reward for levels is not much either. Stats are barely increased. That’s why levels are less important. But in your case stats from second profession will go up at high speed until you get them to where they should get. Other way to get those stats to where they should be is to die few times. Stats from second class won’t go down in that case and would increase when you regain levels later one. But you probably don’t want to use that method right?
-for now, I will stick to being healer. In the first place my second class is just off spec.
-don’t treat it as off spec. Dual class is more than that. You will need to learn how to combine those two professions into one great power. If you don’t do it, it would be a waste. Well you can always leave it for later as even using a single class to the fullest is hard enough. Anyway, Gerald what are our plans for now? Some things have changed after all.
Loki asked.
-well, it will take us more time than we planned because they lost some levels but we were always behind the schedule so it doesn’t matter…
If they tried to follow any schedule it would be impossible to keep you with it. After all looking for new members to a guild could never end after all. Gerald continued.
-as for our plans, right now. We need to get everyone to catch up to Arata and Kotori with levels and then everyone to level 99.
Arata and Kotori welcomed Gerald’s suggestion.
-great then we can take some days off.
-Arata lets go for a date. We have whole city to explore.
-not whole, most of it was destroyed but sure. What you want to do.
-doesn’t matter really, just the two of us somewhere is fine with me.
Plans looked bright but Gerald interrupted them.
-sorry I already have other plans for you.
-I don’t want to do some of your dirty work.
-me too.
-well, well, just listen. For now I will go with everyone else to show them a good exping place so they can catch up to you in no time. It’s hard to make a good plan if you all have different levels. But in the meantime I have mission for you Arata.
-is it something complicated?
-not really, but it may be hard in some way. Kotori just got new class and it would be a waste not to use it right? Still if she were to start using it all of sudden, it will do more harm than good. You two follow what I say?
-well I don’t know much about sword fighting.
-the last book will help in some way.
-in some way? See, I told you, Kotori it’s a fraud.
Arata would not change his mind about this one.
-believing in it won’t hinder you even if it won’t help.
Gerald wanted to add some positives into them but Arata was set already.
-it won’t help, that I can say already ensure. But it can hinder. If one think that they can learn how to fight with some magical way from reading a book, there is no way that they will ever learn anything.
-you are already pessimistic about it…
Gerald gave up as he saw that he won’t be able to convince him.
-still that’s why you are best for the job. You will train Kotori so she learns how to fight with swords.
-I got where that came from. But first of all. Kotori, do you even want to learn?
Arata already read what it was about.
-not really, I am healer after all. Fighting on front lines is something I will leave to you.
-thoughts so.
-still, if we are all going separate way, it would not hurt.
-that’s the spirit. See Arata she wants to learn.
Arata was not deceived.
-not so fast Gerald. So, Kotori what is the real reason?
-I wanted to be taught by Arata, and I mean though in a lot of ways.
“I knew it!”
-Gerald, if I start to teach her now, it won’t turn into teaching you think off anyway.
-well, I understood it just now.
-and wouldn’t it be better if someone better than me trained her instead?
-I don’t think there is much choice. Well, we have Yuki on the board but she wouldn’t cut out to be a good teacher. Also her swordsmanship is too clean, too nice and too deadly. Your style on the other hand is much more effective. That’s probably because you understand games much better than her. It is true that if you have real fighting experience, it’s a great boost but it doesn’t automatically means that you will win against anyone.
-still wouldn’t it be better if you or Loki did that?
-emm… Loki do you know anything about sword fighting?
Gerald asked to which Loki answered.
-I know how to fight against sword users but I don’t use swords myself.
-but you use Sword Gerald.
-I don’t think I would be a good teacher on that front though. Unlike you, my skills came from long experience on battlefield. I was never really thought by anyone and I wouldn’t even know where to start. That’s why Arata you will be best for it.
-fine so how much time would I have for it?
Arata gave up.
-about three days I guess.
“Why did I even ask.”
-you do know it’s impossible to learn how to fight in three days.
-you don’t need her to learn everything. Just the basics, the rest will come with time. And the book will definitely help.
-fine I will do it. But don’t except anything, I never taught anyone either.
-I didn’t ask for more than that. But you have an idea on how to do it right.
-well, I can more or less fight with two-handed swords so I will mostly be showing her example and tell her to repeat the movements. Then the rest will be sparing. Anyway Gerald provide us with some swords, some wooden swords that make no damage upon the hit would be best. She needs to be able to use them.
To that Gerald asked suppressed.
-wait Arata, you can fight with two-handed swords?
-in truth with any weapon. Bare hands are also included. Well, I am better in some style worse in others but the basics are there, I definitely do know more than someone who tried to improvise their fighting at least.
-I don’t even want to know why you learned it all. Anyway for now do what you can. You will have about three to four days for that training. It’s only the period of time when others will level up.
Gerald stated the time limit.
-three days. You will get everyone to 85 that fast? Well if it’s another secret dungeon like last time then I won’t get surprised.
-nah it will take 5 days including breaks but two days will be unavailable for you so you have only three.
Gerald stated.
-why is that?
-after using books like ‘memories of fighter’ the one who uses it will go into sleep for two days. You can’t train when Kotori will be sleeping.
-hey I was going to use that book outside.
Kotori remarked. Should she not equip golden armor she would use the last book right away.
-but don’t you want to be bring to room while being hold like princess. Arata would do it of course.
-oh, you have good ideas. Arata I am using it right now.
-wait.
Kotori started looking through the menu, Arata tried to that she said.
-I can’t wait for our date, I mean lessons, see you in two days. Take care of my body.
-I said wait.
-I see you don’t want me to sleep? What would you want instead? Like some other things that you can do in bed?
Even if Arata knew she really didn’t mean it he really had hard time when Kotori started joking. This time it was even worse.
-oh, I didn’t think you went that far already.
-ah, today’s young is so corrupted.
Gerald and Loki commented.
-you two don’t need to add fuel to the fire. Seriously.
Arata answered like that.
-hahaha. Anyway let’s forget all plans for now. Hey, Kotori you wouldn’t pass a party with your guild, would you?
-who do you take me for!?
-that’s the spirit. So now, the first great party of Refrain will start. Hip, hip, hooray! Applause!
