Marcus, son of Henry, child of Daiva, is a historian born in the year 91. His dream is to uncover the reasons behind the downfall of humanity. Why the once reportedly world-spanning species destroyed themselves.
Marcus, in his studies, has found that there is a period in which humanity went from a person for every three square acres to near extinction. Additionally, around that time in history, there is the first mentions of creatures known as Sazpiols. Sazpiols are essentially an evolution of humanity that most discovered information refers to as fictional or impossible creatures. They are bipedal, stronger, smarter, and all-around excel in all the areas that gave humans the edge on nature.
The currently held theory is that sazpiols were created by humans, humans then lost control of them. This led to a war in which the human race attempted to subjugate the sazpiols forcefully and were unable to do so, thus resulting in the enactment of what has been found to be called the MAD doctrine. Which ended up killing most if not all humanity as it was recorded.
While there is evidence that supports that, Marcus believes that is not the case. The most controversial topic in this theory is what made humans vanish while sazpiols stayed. Marcus believes that it has something to do with the fundamental nature of the sazpiol. Many historians will cite works of literature and technology which show beyond any doubt that humans had access to what can only be described as magic. Every one of these references though has slightly contradicting information, so while it's believed that humans had knowledge of this magic it is hard to know the truth. Other historians will cite similar literature and technology that claims these magics to be incorrect or fictious more than factual.
Marcus personally believes that sazpiols and the humans are one in the same. Counterarguments to this idea include the supposed magic that humans had and if sazpiol are humans why the destruction of most of human society, Marcus continues to believe and strives to prove his point of view.

In addition to all the literatures discovered one of the most common agreed upon things in almost all works is the existence of deities or the attempt to prove or disprove their existence. Even the most factual and verifiable materials beg the question, "Has God forsaken Humanity," or something similar. For Marcus, deities are a complete mystery in the best of cases. In all his research there has never been a true interaction with a deity recorded and those that claim to have had interaction were almost instantly persecuted. Many accounts state that a person, though it's not agreed on who, claimed to be the second son though no sources can agree on what that means or if it was even true.
One thing almost every historian can agree on is the fact that the walls of Lybrandria were completed 120 years ago and thus the year today is 120, and that without the walls their city and civilization would hardly exist. The current border of Lybrandria does now exceed the walls allowing cultivation of farmland as well as expansion of the population. Though at the time of the wall's construction the possibility of expansion was barely a dream people could hope for.
During the time that the wall was being built all records show that people lost their lives at a rate so extreme that many records stated there wouldn't be enough survivors even if the wall was finished. Then there was a great surge of people landing on the shores. A total of 17 ships landed and using the materials from the ships and the near doubling of population the walls were built and the city survived. Though records and survivor accounts are very unclear about what so nearly destroyed the city of Lybrandria. Marcus agrees with the common assumption that sazpiols are responsible.
The world they live in is not nearly understood enough in Marcus' opinion. So, when he is not studying human literature and technology in an attempt to learn more of the history of the world, he practices science as described in the ancient texts to learn more of the laws of the world. Recreating some of humanities most famous laws of physics recorded in the texts of old hoping to eventual prove the existence of magic among other phenomena.
It has been nearly 30 years since his own birth and his wife has just given birth to their child. Marcus strives to learn something extraordinary so that his son may excel in this meritocratic world.
