~Chapter 9~ King of Beast

~Chapter 9~ King of Beast

Quickly I fly towards the forest and circle around a small clearing located somewhere near the center before slowly landing. As my feet touch the ground I feel immediately in danger I quickly pull out my daggers and summon the words to a quick but effective spell to the tip of my tongue before going into a defense position. Slowly I look around me when suddenly from the forest a roar vibrates throughout the air causing a shiver to get sent down my spine, licking my lips I readjust myself and stare into the woods when a large beast comes lumbering out chasing after a fleeing deer.

The deer catches my eye for a moment before it’s head is ripped clean off by a large paw and sent flying. The head bounces to my feet before rolling to a stop. I look down at the decapitated head at my feet slowly then I look over at the monster which had done this in the first place. It was a monster straight from the stories of old it stood around six feet from the shoulder to the ground it’s fur glistened like gold. The beast had the appearance of a large lion but instead, the tail was the body of a snake. The monster was a mythical beast called a Chimera which I had seen in one of the books at Shesa’s Mage Association, in terms of sheer strength alone it was speculated to be equal to the lowest rank of a “Fallen One”.

I slowly shuffle away from the deer head and try to hurry into the woods before the Chimera notices me when from under my foot comes a loud crunching sound, slowly I look under my foot sweat starts streaming my brow when I notice what I had just stepped on or rather into was a large collection of bones. I had stepped into the Chimera’s bone pile and crushed a small animal skull. Slowly I turn around and look behind me and I freeze in fear the Chimera is staring right at me with its dark eyes.

Growling the beast jumps up from the deer carcass and slowly slinks toward me as if I am nothing more than stupid prey who had dared to interrupt its meal. With a loud roar, the Chimera pounces towards me leaving me little room to raise my arms to defend myself. The weight of the beast instantly breaks my guard and I collapse to the ground. With the beast now on top of me I feel its hot slimy breath all over my face, the monster stared into my eyes for a second most likely sensing my fear before its viper-like tail came whipping around its fangs bared straight at my neck.

With what little strength I have left in my arms I swing my arm knocking the snake off balance causing its strike to hit the ground instead of my neck then groping the ground for my dagger my fingers brush the handle and while the snake is stunned from the impact I drive the knife straight through its skull. The Chimera lets out a loud howl as its tail gets stabbed and is thrown into a rage.

The monster having lost all patience to play with its “prey” stands up on its hind legs hoping to crush my rib cage, effectively killing me on the spot. Taking this moment of freedom before the beast came crashing down again I quickly crawled out from under it and rolled away as quickly as possible. I make it out mere seconds before the beast comes crashing down again sending out shockwaves all around it causing a mini-earthquake and nearby trees nearly one hundred feet get uprooted.

Slowly I push myself to my feet and turn to the chimera who has now bitten off its own tail to free itself from the dagger which pinned it to the ground and now was preparing to lunge at me once again. Planting my feet into the ground I prepare myself once again for the monster to charge at me but this time I hold my knife out in front of me and closing my eyes I take a deep breathe and mutter, “Light Magic: Sword of Heavenly Angels” my mana flows into the blade and it is enveloped in a bright light which quickly forms a magnificent broadsword. My mana had taken form around the dagger to transform it into a broad sword made of light.

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

Grinning slightly I roll my shoulders replanting myself. I place both hands on the grip of the broadsword and charge straight for the chimera who seems to be surprised before it too takes off towards me with a mighty roar. Tightening my grip I swing my sword in a large arc and bring it down on the chimeras head cutting its roar short and sending it crashing to the ground. I leap backward and stare at the monster with slight hope for a moment. Did I actually manage to crack its skull open on the first blow?

Then fear shoots through my body like needles, no blood, not even a mark is present on the beast’s head… not a trace of the blow I had made was present. Then I heard a low rumbling growl which reverberated through my skull. The chimera was rising to its feet again, madder than ever, how dare I its prey, how dare I strike it let alone knock it to the ground? Yes, the beast was truly angry. I could see its eyes turning red from rage. I charged at the beast again hoping to knock it into the ground again this time to stun it long enough for me to find a way to kill it but the beast was ready and with a swipe of its mighty paw sent me flying. I felt my ribs crack as I coughed up large amounts of blood, my sword falls out of my hands and lands on the ground with my mana no longer supplying the spell the it turns back into the dagger and falls several feet away from where I land my back slams against a tree with a large cracking sound. I can tell that my spine has now been fractured and I can’t stand at all.

Gritting my teeth I stare down the beast as it slowly approaches me as I sit limp and broken at the base of the tree. Then something appears in my mind to make this beast die a way for me to end this trouble so I can continue to find what I had come here searching for an Ancient Deity if one existed in this place. Taking a deep breath I clear my mind and stare intensely at the chimera who still continued slowly towards me now only about twentyish feet away.

I feel most of my mana drain into the ground as a large magic circle appears beneath me and shoots a large beam of light into the sky, “Ultimate Holy Light Magic: Heavens Judgement -Form I- Hammer of God.” as I finish the last words I feel incredibly exhausted and feel my consciousness slowly creep away from me but I resist the urge to pass out and stare into the sky just in time to notice a huge hammer descending from the sky aiming to completely obliterate any and all things that happen to be underneath it.

Sensing the danger the chimera stared into the sky then immediately went to turn tail and run. This caused me to smile, “God's judgment is absolute, none can escape it,” I mutter to myself bitterly as I watch the hammer come crashing down on the chimera which sends out humongous shockwaves hundreds of times larger than the one before I quickly cast a barrier around myself and the tree which I holding me upright with the little mana I have left. Dust and debris fly all around trees are sent flying tens and hundreds of feet into the woods. The hammer then slowly disappears having completed its job and in its place a crater over two hundred feet in diameter with my tree the only thing standing in the blast radius. I stare at the center of impact and what my eyes see shock me the chimera though differently dead as all of its flesh and organs had been completely obliterated its bones still stood tall as it stared into the sky, or more correctly the very thing which had killed it in the first place.

I sense of awe washes over me along with even more exhaustion which I can no longer fight back and as the blackness of unconsciousness dances before my eyes I find myself laughing slightly, “That thing.... What was it? Oh yes a chimera it… it could truly be called a King of Beast…” and with that my laughter stopped and I once again lost consciousness and fell into the shadows of my mind.
