The end is the beginning (1)

My name is Laith and I have a story to tell. Itʼs the year 2020 and everything is grey, you may be wondering what I mean, well let me explain. In the year 2015 a virus broke out killing thousands, it took some time till a cure was finally made saving everyone's lives but at what cost? A few weeks after the cure was distributed worldwide people began reporting that their friends and loved ones had become dull, doctors dismissed these reports labelling them as rumours and by the time they started to investigate it was already too late.

The world had changed vastly yet no one noticed because everyone had also changed they lost all their emotions, pride, hope, ambition even their imagination no one cared, hated, loved. There were no more wars, technology stopped progressing and people stopped doing things that were once considered fun. Entertainment ceased to exist and anything that went with it. People stopped wearing colourful clothing, drove only grey cars (which were all the same) and avoided colour altogether by 2020 the world literally looked grey.

Getting back to my story, I'm not completely sure why I am different to everyone else but there are a few others like me and I came up with a theory. The cure that saved everyone from the deadly virus so long ago was a virus itself which dulls humans, I think some of us

whom were young at the time developed immunity to it we call ourselves Dull Rejects (D.R). Anyway as I'm talking about Dulls and D.Rs I should also mention Dull Enforcers well basically when a Dull spots one of us D.Rs they start to communicate to each other in a really odd way then the Dull Enforcers arrive seemingly out of nowhere they hunt the D.Rs and if they catch their targets they leave in much the same way they came, no facts are known about what happens to caught D.Rs. we the Dull Rejects consider ourselves “normal humans”, our name has a simple explanation we are rejected by the Dull society so we're dull rejects . It is hard to explain D.Rs but I will take a crack at it. Firstly there are no leaders in charge of all the D.Rs there are gangs, hermits and fakers. Gangs are made up

of minimum three people and there is no maximum, gangs are basically a group of friends that help each other out; some have leaders some donʼt. Hermits live alone they scavenge around looking for food and stuff, they normally donʼt last long so they join a gang or become a faker. Fakers are actors they pretend to be dull and live their lives among Dulls.

Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

I am in a gang the leader in fact we are kind of small only consisting of four members: Me (the leader), Mez (the Pez), Kal (the resourceful one), Fizzy (Graffiti guy) and we are of the Orange Zoo (kind of lame =.=” but we lack imagination). We live in an abandoned building in the restricted part of the city. Certain areas in the city are a no go area for Dulls so basically a D.Rʼs haven, D.Rs rarely fight with each other

except to grab territory or to become the king gang (everyone respects, fears and wants to join the king gang). That was a basic idea of the world I live in so now itʼs time to start, I will explain some more things along the way as it must be very confusing.

I was lying on the sofa and had just woken up, it was early but rays of light were already piercing through the skylight. My eyes were adjusting to the light and I yawned loudly as the morning grogginess started to wear off when suddenly I remembered what day it was and I thought to myself oh shit I'm late (:O). I jumped off my bed grabbed the closest shirt I could find shoved it on then my socks, shoes and finally my favourite hoodie, running as fast as I could I went to what appeared to be a the offspring of a bridge and a

tower. As I was running towards it I thought to myself how could I oversleep on such an important day. I finally got to my destination and found Kal, Mez and Fizzy looking at me all three of them looked furious. ‘Laith you tosserʼ Mez shouted ‘Over slept?ʼ Kal questioned. ‘... no commentʼ Fizzy said calmly. I reached them panted for a second then spoke ‘Sorry, sorry, sorry I overslept anyway lets go inʼ I said hoping they didn't decide to start a mutiny against me. ‘Sewaaʼ Mez replied stubbornly. ‘Fineʼ Kal said hesitantly. ‘Okayʼ Fizzy replied quietly, and with that the four of us entered the tower in the middle of the bridge. The first room we entered was a large hall, it was mostly empty with worn down floor and boarded up windows, near a wall was a long pole with a ring of metal at the

top near the pole was a boy. He was tall, brown with spiky black hair he wore a baggy shirt and shorts and he was holding an orange ball with black lines on it, as the boy walked closer I noticed he had the most startling eyes I had ever seen (no homo), I was speechless for a second but quickly regained my thoughts. ‘Oh look it's just one lonely hermitʼ I said mockingly trying to scare him ‘Hermit! I ain't no hermit I'm Danny O. King of the courtʼ He spoke with an accent I didn't quite recognise, he spoke loudly and proudly speaking of things I didnʼt know as if everyone knew. ‘So how do you want to do thisʼ I asked. What I meant was how does he wish to battle over his spot. ‘Let's have a basketball matchʼ he replied smiling.
