“Kizou,” said a woman’s voice. “It’s time to wake up.”
“Is the meat ready, Mom?” I mumbled while adjusting my groggy eyes towards her. I’m pretty sure I drooled a bit as well.
Mom always wore the Royal clothes wherever she went. She kept the crown on her head, and the robes she always wore were shiny. It didn’t look comfortable, but she must’ve had her reasons.
“Well, of course. How else will you get big and strong?”
I darted out of my bed and ran as fast as a 4 year old could to the kitchen. I ran through the long hallways and passed by all the maids and butlers who couldn’t help but chuckle. I ran to the kitchen door and opened it to find the table was set with all the best delicacies in the world. The sweet aroma of the meat had my mouth watering, and I quickly took a seat. I instantly went to grab a fork, but a hand slapped my wrist.
“Uh uh,” Mom looked at me and shook her fingers disappointingly. “You must always remember to wait for your dad.”
Sometimes, I wonder if Mom is just super fast, or if I’m super slow, because she’s always ahead of me no matter how early I run to the dining table. It could be magic, but I’m still learning the spells in the book. I wonder why that’s the case, since everyone else my age is already practicing magic.
“Guah,” cried a baby across the table.
“Good morning to you too, Suzaki,” I walked over towards my 8 month old brother and patted his head.
Suzaki was the 2nd Prince, behind me, of course. He’s pretty chubby, but I guess that’s why everyone finds him adorable. I’ve always wanted a brother, so I’ve been super excited at getting the chance to train him and making him my second in command. Sometimes, I wonder why I’m such a great older brother.
I went back and slid down into my chair as I realized that I would now have to wait at least 10 more minutes for Dad to come down. For a king, he’s pretty slow to come to his appointed duties which at this moment is to eat breakfast on time. I looked out the window to see the Demon Kingdom.
The Demon Kingdom was located in the south part of the world, and it was home to the descendants of Demonity. As with most Kingdoms, there were villages for residents to live, shops for merchants to sell, farms for crops to eat, schools for children to learn, and the castle where the Royal Family lived. There were plenty of other villages that weren’t close by, but they were still part of the Kingdom. The Kingdom was huge, but the best part of all was that I was the Prince over everything.
Loud footsteps could be heard walking towards the kitchen door. I’m still learning from school, but it is said that you could feel how strong someone is. Sometimes, you could even pass out if you weren’t careful. I think it was called “Authority” or something like that. I know there was more to it, but it got kind of boring. All I know is that it was a pretty big word.
However, it always felt different with Dad. Dad walked in, and you could never feel his Authority or even a shred of strength actually. I don’t know if he’s weak or if he’s just hiding it. He wore some shiny coat and pants to show that he was of Royalty. He also had the black bracelet of Kings which showed that he was the King of the Demon Kingdom. I don’t know why he needs a bracelet when he already has a shiny crown on his head.
He sat down on his chair and had a natural scowl on his face which usually caused most people to be afraid. Too bad they were too scared to approach him to see how he really was.
“Look at my beautiful wife and my two sons,” he said with a huge grin. “Why didn’t you eat without me?”
“Mom said that I had to wait,” I couldn’t help but make a disappointed face.
“Guah,” Suzaki responded. I wonder if he was agreeing with me, or if he was just making baby noises. I’m just glad to see my brother supporting me.
“How could you make the boys wait, Kanna?” Dad had a disappointed face as well.
“Both of you don’t look at me like that,” Mom sighed. “You can’t be too lax on the two Princes, Goro.”
“But look at them,” Dad pointed at Suzaki and me. “If the boys want to eat, let the boys eat!”
“Yeah,” I yelled. “Let the boys eat!”
“Guah!” Suzaki cried out.
“Hah,” Mom let out an even deeper sigh. “Let’s just eat then.”
“Don’t worry, Kizou and Suzaki,” Dad said. “Dad will always have your back.”
“Hmph,” I said with a thumbs up as I had plenty of meat inside my mouth.
“Guah,” Suzaki responded back.
School was the most boring thing about my life. The Demon School taught students aged 5 years old to 12 years old. However, everyone was separated by their status with those of royalty being in one section and commoners being in another section. The only time there would be any sort of interaction was from passing by each other in the halls. Within the 7 years of school, every student would have some sort of first hand experience in an actual battle. After those 7 years, you were expected to figure out what your career was going to be.
For the royalty that couldn’t fight, they would work in jobs like a chef, carpenter, or whatever useless job there was out there. If you were a commoner, those useless jobs might actually be worthwhile, since there was no way for them to be promoted higher than a grunt. For the strong royalty, they would become commanders for the Demon’s Army and receive glory and praise from the people. But why does someone like me, the future King, have to attend classes and worry about that when I’m going to be the one to command the Demon’s Army?
Honestly, I only want the perks of being a King. Imagine all of the meat that you could ask for, and they couldn’t refuse you. That gets me excited!
“Kizou, pay attention,” Mya looked at me angrily.
“I am!” I think that was the only thing I could say to avoid embarrassment of how I didn’t even know what class we were in.
I took a quick look around and saw that I was in Magic Spell class with 4 other classmates. We were known as the Promised Generation, since Dad and all 4 of his Generals had children at the same time. Even at the age of 4 years old, we were trained to become strong enough to protect the people.
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
Tina was the daughter of the First General, the strongest General. She had long, black hair and was the loudest and most obnoxious. I don’t want to admit it, but even with all of the hollering she does, she’s still stronger than all of us. Gorilla lady!
Itsuki was the son of the Second General, the tactician. He had short, blonde hair and was the quietest. However, he was also the smartest and would ace all of the exams without even trying. What a nerd!
Kiyoshi was the son of the Third General, the mage. He had curly black hair and was obviously the best at magic. He would always pull magic pranks like putting my shirt inside out when I’m not looking. Stupid mage!
Midori was the daughter of the Fourth General, the swordsman. She had short, black hair and was the most well mannered. She had the best skills in the sword, and she was even catching up to the more advanced students. The worst kind!
The teacher for this class was Mya, the 7 year old prodigy that belonged to the Hell’s Group, the King’s trusted group to take on the behind the scenes tasks. Their strength is on par with the Generals, but it is said that they had the potential to go even further.
The Promised Generation definitely had talent even if we all didn’t get along. With how everything was going, they would all become my Generals by the time I became King. At that point, I would hope they weren’t so annoying.
“Didn’t I just say to pay attention?” Mya threw a chalk at my head.
“Ouch!” I rubbed my forehead. Guess I was too deep in thought.
“Oh, Kizou is in trouble,” Tina pointed out to gain favor from Mya.
“No one asked, Tina,” I scowled towards her.
“Let’s just all relax,” Kiyoshi smiled as he put a spell out that released a lavender aroma.
“That’s too smelly,” Tina started coughing.
“Only smelly for gorillas,” I stuck my tongue out.
Tina was clearly angry and stuck her tongue out as well.
“I think it’s smelly too, what does that make me?” Midori looked genuinely confused.
“You’re more like a monkey than a gorilla,” I shrugged.
Even Itsuki couldn’t help but chuckle at this.
“Quiet down!” Mya was visibly annoyed to where you could feel energy seep out of her.
We all quieted down and looked down to avoid getting into even more trouble.
“See me after school, Kizou,” Mya was serious.
“Yes ma’am,” I knew that it wasn’t the time to mess around.
The rest of the day continued on with each class being as boring as the next. The upcoming classes consisted of politics, magic combat class, swordsmanship class, and then physical combat class.
During politics, we talked about how the relationship between the Demon Kingdom and the other Kingdoms were still tense. Itsuki had a maniacal look on his face as he kept writing stuff down like a weirdo. The Human Kingdom, Elf Kingdom, and Dwarf Kingdom had a good relationship while we were still the outsiders. To make matters worse, we were told that demon traffickers were at an all time high. They’re the scum of the world.
During magic combat class, I was left out as usual. While the other 4 were practicing their skills, I was forced to read books to myself. I will say that I’ve read almost every book from the library and have memorized every single spell there is. Take that, Kiyoshi! I really want to know what my affinity is, and it gets me impatient whenever I see everyone practicing theirs. Water, fire, earth, wind, all of it just makes me excited to learn. However, I don’t think I’ll get the chance anytime soon.
During swordsmanship class, I practiced to the side with a stick as always, but I would never miss the chance to glance over. Midori was dominating as usual without even breaking a sweat. I’ve watched her enough to where I was pretty sure I could read her moves effectively. I continued practicing swings with my stick and mimicked the moves I would do if I fought her. However, I knew clearly that her skills would still be on a different level.
During physical combat class, I was a mere observer once again. Even though Tina was obnoxious, I was always still amazed by how much stronger she actually was than everyone. She easily beats everyone else up, and she could keep up with Mya even if it was only slightly. The speed and accuracy of her punches paired with her movements made Tina look like she’s a veteran fighter. I practiced throwing out punches to myself as I continued watching.
School finally finished, and we gathered to discuss what we were going to do later. Even if we hated each other, we always tried to stay close with each other, since we had a reputation to uphold.
“Do you all want to go into town later?” Tina was chewing on a large piece of meat that made me hungry.
“Sure, I’ve got nothing to do anyways,” Kiyoshi yawned.
“Around what time?” I asked.
“Obviously after you finish your meeting with Mya,” Tina was annoyed again. “You get in trouble too much.”
“Mhm,” Itsuki couldn’t help but nod.
“Let’s relax,” Midori made sure to step between us before a problem arose. “We can’t blame Kizou for being stupid.”
“Yeah, she’s right,” I nodded my head affirmingly before realizing what was said. “Hey!”
Everyone couldn’t help but laugh.
“Let’s meet in front of the castle gates in 3 hours then,” I answered as I decided for the team.
“Yeah, yeah,” Kiyoshi snickered. “Just don’t take too long for your date with Mya.”
“D-d-date?” Midori couldn’t help but be flustered.
“This idiot couldn’t get a date with someone before I do,” Tina answered flustered as well.
“It’s not a date,” I couldn’t help but be flustered as well at this point.
“We all know you like her anyways,” Kiyoshi nudged me. “Just don’t get into too much trouble even though that's your way of getting her to look at you, Mr. Attention Seeker.”
Itsuki’s eyes seemed to open wide as if he just learned a new tactic that he’d never thought of before.
“You like Mya?!” Tina and Midori both asked in shock.
“Those words never came out of my mouth,” I crossed my arms.
“We’re only 4 years old, we shouldn’t be thinking of these things,” Midori tried to sound firm, but it didn’t work with how red she was.
“I agree,” Tina answered. “L-L-Love is something for grown ups.”
“No one said love!” I wonder how red I must’ve been at that moment.
“Hurry up already,” Kiyoshi pushed me. “Don’t forget that the castle gate is where we’ll meet in a couple of hours.”
That had to be the most awkward conversation I’ve ever had in my life, but I guess it’s something I have to be used to. I’m going to be King after all, and my Generals should know about my personal problems as well.
