An: Enjoy, hopefully I will have another one up tommorrow.
I will increase pace after exams please endure.
More character development.
In this chapter I talk about Drexel and his opinion on what is good and what is bad.
The chapter is about Drexel understanding why he acts the way he does.
He is still a kid, yeah, but who says he can't think deep.
After All he is a genius!
Sorry about the delays between chapters but I had more exams than I thought!
If you don't enjoy the chapter I will redo it.
Please give me ideas or tell me if something doesn't make sense, this is reader interactive.
---------------
Drexel was a timid boy.
Although his looks suggest otherwise, he has always been shy.
A boy with few words.
He never had any friends until he met James and Aaron.
His grandfather had visit them, they were both from an exalted noble heritage and their clan leaders (grandfathers) were S rank, although not as strong as his grandpa who knew 15% of the higher affinity of velocity, they were still strong.
Even when he was with his friends he never spoke much.
Although they were nice to him he felt like they were putting up a facade, Aaron with his cold calculating eyes and James with his adorable kind attitude.
Till this day he never truly knew his friends, or if they were actually friends at all.
They grew up together but never once did they show each other who they were.
They never truly expressed themselves.
Two of them were nobles, although they were not arrogant and did not act like other nobles they had to alway act according to some rule or another. They don't want to lose face for their clans.
Drexels grandfather was not a noble, but was extremely rich because of his adventuring days, his wealth and power made him noticeable to even the emperor.
Drexel always wanted a friend that expressed him or herself. Someone who just doesn't give a shit.
All this loneliness through his life bottled up, he started talking to himself.
He never knew his parents and barely met his grandfather.
All he knew were butlers and maids but even they ignored him.
He was not his grandfathers only grandchild.
He had cousins, his cousins were in fact also geniuses and had also reached c rank.
They were the same age as him, went through the same gruelling training as him but... They did it together.
Never was he accepted. He was even bullied. But they were powerful. He was weak.
He was almost an outcast to his own family, he spent most of his days training and occasionally met James and Aaron who were always together.
Even when he got admitted to the academies Fenix house, it was nothing special, in fact, his cousins chose to deny the scholarships and went to the dragon house in one of the branch academies.
He was glad he was away from his family, no more ostracising or bullying. No more acting or lies.
But he was wrong.
There's always darkness. Darkness in people. Lies, cruelty and loneliness. He saw it everyday. Always a kid getting tripped over or bullied. Everyone watching in amusement. People enjoy feeling more powerful than others.
They get satisfaction from others pain. No matter what race or species. Life is cruel.
Only the weak know the truth. Those who have been inflicted.
They grew to accept the harshness.
There is always a food chain.
It's natural.
Drexel begun to accept it. The darkness in life. He watched Knights beat orphans. He watched nobles wickedly lie.
He seen old citizens get robbed. All he did was watch, when he wasn't training.
He never stopped them. He knew he was a coward, he was bred to be one, he as looked down upon, told he was weak and was beaten by his cousins, he started to believe he was.
He would try to fight back but there was always something holding him back...
His clan and house. His grandfathers trust.
They never met much but he understood his grandfather loved him.
He knew he introduced him to Aaron and James on purpose, but he could count the times he has been with his grand father with the fingers on his hands. His grandfather never truly expressed his love.
Drexel begun to grow cold, and barely spoke.
He could never escape the lies in his childhood.
He saw a chance in the academy and grasped it, only to find he was clenching nothing but dust.
Darkness is out there... always.
But somewhere, deep in the darkness, there's alway light.
As soon as he saw Fenix, he knew that he held darkness inside him.
But he knew Fenix was no coward.
He emitted light and held darkness.
He never cared of what people thought of him.
He never cared of hiding his powers.
He was a book. Open to read, but unwanted.
Fenix knew he was unwanted, he created a barrier around him on purpose.
[Society doesn't like people who act differently, but... Why should I give a crap about what society thinks?]
Thoughts like these started to appear in Drexels mind.
He finally knew how to escape the boundaries of society and worlds power.
He needed to grow stronger!
Fenix became the light in his darkness-- or darkness in his light.
This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.
Darkness is truth and reality; it's harsh.
Light is what we want to see or believe: lies and a fantasy.
They were both a part of each other.
You need to lie sometimes, you need to be honest other times.
After he met Fenix did he really start to make friends.
Under his cruel training did he hear curses and bonding.
Hardships make people unite.
He started to bond with Aaron, James and Jessica.
The beast girl Arina looked like a nice person as well.
He had an unexplainable desire to befriend Fenix.
They were alike but the opposite at the same time.
Now he wants to be just like Fenix, he is only 9 after all.
Fenix is like a role model to him.
--------------------
The group were currently looking at some quests on the bulletin board.
The adventurers that were currently in the guild couldn't help but chuckle as they walked past them.
A group of what seemed to look like 12 year olds were looking at a C rank or D rank bulletin board.
An average adventurer is rank C and a strong adult is a rank D.
Drexel: "What should we pick? I think we should do a low level escort mission. What do you think Fenix?"
[*Sigh* I'm tired of standing here and staring intently at this board, why have we been doing this for half an hour? Are we idiots? When I get home I'm getting a relaxing bath to cleanse my brain.] Drexel was tired. He wanted to get this over with.
Drexel just had an awkward class of experimenting with Fenix, because they both like working alone and aren't good with people.
Now they all just looked stoned, staring at a board like a group of idiots.
He asked Fenix as he has higher authority in decision making in the group.
Fenix:"Sure." [So this is the limit of their endurance, we need some more mental training and discipline, they need more patience.]
Drexel looked like a normal boy with brown hair and a plain face. If you looked closely, you could see a well toned body for a 9 year old, with sinuous arms and legs and glossy slightly tanned skin.
He had his arms behind his head, holding it up, and was looking at Fenix, waiting for him to finish signing the quest.
People still need escorts, even now. It's just being a bodyguard for some rich merchant or noble.
Only very few places have a teleport gate and it was extremely expensive, fast vehicles can also damage goods.
This is why they either use slow vehicles or magical flying beasts or items.
Inventories can not hold many goods so it couldn't be used.
Even when using vehicles it takes a long time to travel between cities, it can take days or weeks, that's how big the land is and there are many magical beasts that are too large or fast to get past not including bandits. All these factors make escort missions one of the most popular quests.
Fenix gave the quest he chose to the lady, with a smirk etched across his face.
A look of worry soon appeared on the groups face when they saw the smirk on Fenix and the lady who was smiling weakly but lips were twitching every now and then.
The lady gave the quest back and mouthed 'I'm sorry' to the rest of the group.
Fenix:"Get ready, In 2 weeks will be on your first quest. It's a border rank C-B quest, but don't worry since you will have me and Drexel. I will also teach you guys personally so no worries!" Fenix walked past them with a smile across his face and completely ignored the jaws hanging from there mouths.
James:"He's trying to kill us... Definitely. I am just going to go eat now. If I die, let it be known on my gravestone:
'Drexel brought thy devil upon thee' or something like that, make my gravestone a sculpture of a burger with wings.
Goodbye." James gave one look at the quest, almost wet himself and left.
Arina:"Um... Are we really going to die?" Arina quietly spoke.
Aaron:"It seems like it, come on let's get going before it gets dark."
Aaron and Arina followed James outside the adventurers guild and into the academy.
Jessica:"We have to escort them past an Orc tribe and magical beast nest. Oh don't forget that forest which doesn't let technology or radars work. If we get caught, that would be a Rank B+ quest."
Drexel:"We can only hope that this is a joke or another prank, like the one he pulled in class."
Jessica:"How was that a joke? He nearly killed us. The only thing that was funny was watching that 16 year old classmate shit himself! Pff..Mwahaha, what am I saying that was genius!"
Drexel:[Isn't one psychopath enough... But two... They are both definitely sadists.]
A smile slowly crept on Drexels face.
[Wait... Why am I smiling? Am I turning?! No! Please no! Oh god!]
Another internal struggle happened inside Drexels mind...
He tried purifying himself by praying and baptising that night.... Little did he know it was too late... He joined the dark side.
